Well basically I'm just touting crap because I'm bored and have nothing else to do; and haven't been paying attention to anything going on here. Hup.
I wasn't gonna say it ;D
I would like features that are designed to facilitate the things that we as a community have tended to engage in as a community. The forum/irc format works fine for everything but I kind of see a mainsite as a statement of the things we (collectively) care about. So I guess that in making a new GW, you're creating a software model of the community, its activities and its values. The question of which features would be good for the site then becomes the question of what kind of software would make it easier for SW/GW to do SW/GW things. I guess that the best way to help with that is to explain what I get out of the community so what it can be compared with other people's views.
why im here
- talk shit. read shittalk of others. (very important)
- discover cool new things through the collective wisdom of internet chumps.
- talk about videogames / read writings of internet's foremost videogame phenomenologists.
- participate in community art activities such as music, drawing, writing.
- maybe play videogames with others if internet reaches new zealand.
- access nostalgia of past things read but not participated in.
how computer internet software can facilitate this (ideas)
1. forum. (heh)
2. keep proper archives of games and albums and writings released. people are always looking for shit that mysteriously no longer exists anywhere. it's sad.
3. project tracking / coordination thingy for announcing information on projects of any kind, including games, music, social engineering and watercolor painting. keep information on who is involved.
4. make source code available so that dumb power struggles can be resolved with modern technology of "fork."
5. speaking of modern technology is this going to be in php because
apparently there are modern web frameworks for it now but i still don't trust it
6. one of those javachat thingies that makes it easy for new people to connect to irc and interrupt dogtalk / romchat.
7. integration of other related things such as twitter feed of all users and people's interesting blogs (e.g. dicko's) to the front page. much of the community is spread around and i guess the goal of a mainsite type thing would be to aggregate it.
10. these are my list of demands. please use them to create the ethnographic record of the people of saltworld faithfully.
This is a really good post and your way of thinking is (almost) parallel to mine. I think you will be reasonably pleased. The site architecture is going to have a talent-pool approach and the joining process will determine what people like to updated on, and what they themselves create (if anything). There will also be fields for how free you are and what your attitude is to working with others (i.e. do you work for money/free). There will be an emphasis on helping people to do things.
The project management feature is something that will be difficult to perfect. I think it might be a little too overwhelming. I am debating it vs. the talent pool idea. Of course they could both coexist but it might add a level of complexity that bamboozles new users. I'm not saying yes or no, just confirming that I will think about it and if I don't code it in I will structure the site so that it can be added without a complete rewrite.
here's how i see it, you're either going for
a) upload "creative media" so anything like pics, drawings/paintings/"art", music, games, etc etc etc
b) upload game-related "creative media"
so in case a you have a deviantart/flickr/whatever ripoff and thats a dumb idea
and in case b you have a workable idea. so a domain name that says "game related upload and share or something" game database, assetdb, something about game assets. i think thats a good idea.
I disagree with you about case A. The thing is, we (at least based on things we talked about in pre-Salt World topics) want a site for our community. The idea is we want a site that showcases OUR games, OUR music, OUR writing, OUR art, etc. So who cares if deviantart or flickr or whatever technically lets you do those things? They don't let you do all of those things in the same place and they aren't focused around OUR community. That's what this site was always supposed to be, a site for our community to showcase what we have going on.
I mean going by your case B we'd just be gamejolt or w/e other indie gaming site.
You're both right in a way. If you think of the types of media we create it's different from either flickr or DA in the way that we are more geared towards things that are derivative of videogames. I think a name that is related to our history but not typecasting us as a videogame community would be a good idea. I want to avoid using the word "art" or "media" and focus on something that sums up who we are. That's just an idea by the way.
All these things I have said I'm not saying this is definite so please debate away because in doing so you're saving me a lot of thought and stopping me from falling into dumb-traps.
