I like that everyone's got their own developed taste. that's not really something you get frommusicsite top10 whichis generaalloi like some slightly off attempt at an empirical, objective list of BEST MUSIC interspersed awkwardly with opinions (eg my OP). today I'm gonna start out easy with kaworu's tom waits and then make an attempt at the pikacyu/makoto album before moving on to bigs's stuff

I understood most of it jamie but I don't know what to listen to first. besides st. vincent, because I've been meaning to listen to her since her first album

idk i don't follow or keep up with music so much anymore and you can keep a track on what's in generally going on. i don't think i have missed much.
apart from those chigago tapes catas showed me, burial and james blake and mmmmaybe cambridge library murders i haven't heard anything changing for awhile.

we COULD talk about james blake though..
liking new/semi-popular music is the only way in which I'm not a misanthropic cave-dwelling hermit. music and sports. without this stuff I have absolutely nothing to say to anyone in college. actually that's already true.

yeah but what can you do about it. i can't do that with music though i understand your crux and it's something i need to work out as well.

i keep up with scenes and names a little bit but idk i can't lie about this stuff. most of modern music is noise-interpretations of everybody's elses work in the 80's and fucking HEARTFELT accoustic tunes solo or band about white middleclass adolescent problems. everything is social network conscious and centered now, assimilation...also i again made a paragraph about this being with that music crit tone and idk if anyone wants to hear that or if i want to get into that role again!

I'll just say that from what i have heard from past couple of years... those chigago tapes songs catas gave me, some individual's music, burial and james blake is getting somewhere. i might be forgetting stuff here now but lot of those are youtube users anyways! nigerian metal seems to be pretty good but we'll see how that turns out.

especially burial and james blake seem like guys who really seems to have the chance and vision to break out to uncharted territories but iirc blake seems to stick with the r'n'b-dubstep cool lovesong-shit for now/it seems to be his direction now. his stuff is pretty relevant to dumb topic/spacechat stuff!!

hundley's mixtape had some good music though, i wonder how those guys develope!! hundley my man you need to gimme rec sometimes dude.

hundley linked me to this site a few years ago - http://www.thesixtyone.com/

when i first saw it was mostly indie electronic music but now it seems they've branched out into other genres i think? either way this place was once a good source of hundleymusic.

edit: oh no wait that was a different music site. i think this was it - http://www.traxinspace.com/
i linked you to both of those i think.

thesixtyone was really great a year or two ago, but they overhauled a pretty decent interface and decided to go with the incoherent and senseless one they have now. it's fucking awful and actually a notable chunk of the really good people who were active there either removed themselves from the site or went totally inactive. i guess they were aware that everybody hated it though so you can access the site through the old interface, which is a whole lot better: http://old.thesixtyone.com/

i don't know how much that site will do for anybody, but there's still a lot of great music there if you're patient enough to look for it.

hundley's mixtape had some good music though, i wonder how those guys develope!! hundley my man you need to gimme rec sometimes dude.
man i gotta rec music to myself. been in a big drought as far as finding new music goes. feels like whenever i download a new album there is like ONE SONG that i like and the rest is just trash that i eventually delete. that makes it difficult to really suggest things to people.

along with what i said above though, you could hit my listener profile on t61 and just see what i've saved/hearted. http://old.thesixtyone.com/Hundley/
i'm not an authority and there will invariably be OFFENSIVELY BAD music that i liked, but if i was going to put together a twenty song mixtape probably like 75% of it would be shit i found out about on there.

I could probably name a few if I thought about it but I don't feel like doing that. Only one off the top of my head right now is Raphael Saadiq - Stone Rollin'.

All right, stuff I listened to from this year...

I really liked Yuck's debut album, although they sound like a mix of The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr and Pavement and thus aren't super original.

Parallax by Atlas Sound was pretty unremarkable and not nearly as good as Deerhunter's Halcyon Digest from the previous year, but it still had some good tracks on it and Bradford Cox is one of my favorite current artists.

I listened to Tom Waits' new album. It's nothing mindblowing but it's always nice to have a new Tom Waits album and it was one of the better albums he's made in the past 10 or so years.

So basically I remember 2011 as a pretty meh year for music with nothing super original or outstanding. It was also the year when I got sick of my friends talking about Dubstep music and my hatred for it grew.

cool, I'll give Yuck a listen. idk if you listened to them, but the one song I heard from Fucked Up's 2011 album sounded like it was in a similar vein

and yeah, that one dusted guy described it as a year of musical austerity, which is kind of an embellished way of saying nothing ground-breaking was released!

i just remembered that datasette's Business Funk III came out this year http://datassette.net/content/datashat-businessfunk3.mp3
i guess it's a mix, idk if datasette made it or not but business funk sums it up exactly. anything you do while playing this music will be hilarious.

also i now like the album Seven Idiots by World's End Girlfriend. apparently the songs were written by starting with vocals and vocal melodies and then building the rest of the instrumentation and then removing the vocals, which is a pretty cool concept that clearly worked out pretty well! ( wondered if someone had mentioend it already but couldn't find it with ctrl+f)

Didn't T.I. release a new album too? If so I liked that one alot. T.I. is cool as hell. I think right now I like him way more than kanye. He's got the delivery of little wayne with a message like kanye but it isn't all preachy and angry. I do like my kanye but he's also fucking dumb as shit too.

Thats horseshit no mercy is his best imo and it had more songs that I actually liked on it. "Castle walls" and "Welcome to the world" are awesome. That one is 2010 but I'm pretty sure he went to jail way before that and I don't think the new one is out yet or I haven't heard it.

From the trend of your musical taste that I've seen it looks like you ignore any music that gets popular and just go looking for more obscure shit to get into and promote until it gets popular and it sucks again. Thats lame, good music is good music. If you're tired of hearing it thats one thing but don't discredit the artist and say they suck when they're actually getting technically and lyrically better.

Same shit about lil wayne. I heard people say the carter 4 sucks and he sucks post carter 2 yadda yadda thats bullshit he's even gotten more mature about his writing and his technical ability is way better too.

And I like his reformed ex-gangsta attitude more it shows a sign of maturity and wisdom even though he still sounds a lil ignorant sometimes.

Also this:

Quote
T.I. has been praised for helping a twenty-four year old suicidal man in Atlanta named Joshua Starks, convincing the man not to go through with jumping from a 22-story building.[113] On October 13, 2010, T.I. reportedly heard about the situation on the radio and drove to the scene at Atlanta's 400 Colony Square Building.[114] He drove to the site, and asked the police if he could help Starks. T.I. then talked to the man, and convinced him not to jump. Afterwards, T.I. stated "For one, I'm not taking any credit. I didn't do it... I could've just as well came down there and it could have been resolved in another way. The fact of the matter is that God put me in a position to help, and I can't take any credit for that."

Whatever i don't really care, i just liked him before and am not digging the new stuff. asap rocky is legit tho, his crews actually good and not annoying/unlistenable like odd future. also i don't ignore music that gets popular, the only thing i basically keep up with anymore these days is rap because everything else sucks.

also i don't know if you people know about weeknd but it's cool cause he's from my area and he's getting pretty big now too. some of it is boring but i like where he's taking r&b. his cover of dirty diana is p good

obviously there's still a lot of shit but that's like 98% of the music industry. 2012 is going to be pretty good for rap I think, there still are legit up-n-comin mcs like kendrick lamar, freddie gibbs/madlib are releasing a record, there's gonna be new wu, big krit, schoolboy q, currensy and asap/spaceghost purrp etc. or you can just spend errday listening to lil b. also i still like lil wayne though a lot of his stuff is crap. he's obviously no comparison to big l, it's just the trend of everything right now turning to shit.

I dunno I really like lil wayne's lyrical style but on a whole rap is more of music production, presentation, and lyrical content thing for me. I can't listen to too much nas or other old school stuff because they're too talky to me. I guess if you're looking at it from strictly a rap perspective I can understand what you're saying but I think they're putting more into it now than ever before. Working more with the actual music side of it than a dude talking over a rhythm which bores the fuck outta me.

Drake is alright but he's either hit or miss and his stuff is pretty base, Wiz Khalifa is the same way. And I feel like that with T.I. but I like the way he's doing it and he's got more songs I like. Lil wayne's good and he can go places most southern rappers can't and put a message in something without you really realizing it, its almost subliminal. I think if he focused on that though and quit with the FUCKIN HOES AND GETTIN CRUNK shit he'd be way way better. I think he pretty much moved closer to that with the last album he did.

B.O.B. is a good example of the style rap I'm into. Kind of like the attitude and groove of dirty south meets the intellect of alot of northern/east coast rappers. Without kanye west's angry and self-rightious bullshit

honestly the only new mainsteam act i've seen with legit talent has been nicki minaj. im not even kidding. i hate her music but she actually knows how to rap unlike the entire rest of her contemporaries.
i agree with this statement wholeheartedly. apparently there are a few i'm sleeping on though.

Man nicki minaj is so hot, I saw her live in new orleans at a lil wayne concert. She is a chocolate goddess.

Wiz is cool, he's got some cool ass beats but I don't like how most of his songs revolve around the same shit (party rap). That came out later 2010 I think.

"Burn After Rolling" is a good place to start its his mixtape.

but you could go to any of his albums and they're all pretty good alot of songs I find hit or miss. I really like "goodbye" its one of his older songs.

I dunno if anyone here has heard of "Chiddy Bang", they're backpack rap but really good. The rapper got the new world record for longest freestyle.
