So Some/most you might have known or heard of my Site IndyMixWeekly.  It was intended to be a standalone site/blog that cherished what we have here in this community. the GWTroubadours.
The site was intended for all music creators of all genres to have a place to put up their music, but also contribute in 'weekly' (turned monthly, turned hiatus) Albums.

I'm just going east mode with this one.  I'm focusing on Electronic Music from lofi / simplistic to house and ....*shudders*..... Dubstep. But not average find the hottest music blog.
I'm runnin all trcks thru soundcloud, and Only showing/promoting Original Tracks, and Mixes (at least 15mins or more, unless it is some Solid mini mix you want to promote) that where created/(re)mixed by Unsigned (aka: Indy) artists.   At the time Its just Graphic Drafts... Critique away.

Old site is still up for now at www.indymix.net

New Logo

Current Draft of New Site Layout.

Thoughts?

Ps: I miss our Premium powers :(

I'm glad I'm not the only one who shudders at Dubstep. I've been meaning to get my feet wet in electronic music so I might contribute at some point.

Doesn't unsigned imply that you are bending over waiting to be signed?

Regarding the design, it doesn't stand out to me. I am most drawn to Poizen Jam's logo and I'm pretty sure that that's because it's superimposed over the young lady's shapely behind. I think that the text part of the logo gives me more of a comic book feeling than a music feeling, and the non-text part I just don't understand. I guess you don't really need to get too many connotations from logo elements, but it doesn't really strike me as memorable either. I don't know what the city image in the post titles means or why it is there. Similarly, the background gradient is ever so slightly distracting and highly unnecessary. The main font reminds me of my linux terminal font and this further clashes with the other elements to make the design wholly confusing to me. The only thing I have to say about the colours is that it reminds me of the old GW colours, which makes it seem a little dated. They don't contrast much. Maybe start with B&W and work back to colours again? I'm not a v good designer but I find it's an ok approach. Maybe you already tried it.

As a first time visitor, I think that I would conclude that the website is for people who like party party music and Jager and then leave. The website seems focused on electronic dance music and your local music scene from what I can see on the posters, which are the part of the site that I get the clearest message from. I'm not convinced that this is compatible with continuing the spirit of the troubs projects. Can't speak for others, but my motivation for making tracks for the three I put in for wasn't really related to exposure, and to a certain extent I didn't want to be absolutely everywhere immediately. I wanted to be part of something communal and expand my creative horizons. I don't see much facilitating that in the draft. It seems more geared to syndicating and promoting than collaborating and discussing. I think that's all.

I guess that might be harsh, but hopefully you find my opinions useful.

If you looked at the other site he had it wasn't just for exposure but communal purposes too? I think something like this is cool and could give the music side of whats left of GW a jumpstart if people put effort into it. There really is no community left here to do projects like that IE: why every single troubadour album for the past few years has either died or was pretty much just slapped together last minute. It doesn't seem "electronically geared" to me either. Yeah its flashy and isn't meant to appeal to just the higher educated, high browed crowed you get here. Which honestly is getting boring when you just have people passing judgement about shit all the time and not actually really doing anything. Like a bunch of fuckin xenophobes. We had people like couchfiend and ryan that would practice and show what they were doing and work with other people. Now you just got a select few that are left pretty much doin their own thing and not really developing as well imo?

also I kind of like some dubstep but I think its done incorrectly most of the time (unless I don't understand what dubstep is) I like some of skrillex's stuff and I saw a guy named bassmaster live who is really big around here. I don't like when dubstep gets all unorganized and turns into just an incoherant jumble of loud ass bass and samples (it reminds me of ragnar sometimes). But I think if its toned down a little bit and done with some song construction in mind it could sound fuckin badass.

This is a new song done by B.O.B. and Lil Wayne I think its dubstep inspired this is what I'm talking about done right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9g1CgvXhCo4

And there was a skrillex song I heard done with vox samples or maybe a vocalist that sounded really good. But I think dubstep is either hit or miss miss miss miss miss.

He means people that make their own music and want others to hear it.

I think the problem with the troubadours now and the problem with your site is: expectation.

There needs to be no schedules or really organized album making until enough people get drawn into the concept of doing such a thing. I think it should be done song by song and released at any time in which the song is released. You need more people willing to step out of their own box and work with others, imo you learn way better that way (once you get up to a certain point though).

Like if you're just learning guitar and how to sing and aren't confident enough (like myself with playing guitar). Ask questions and learn/practice and put with what you're comfortable with out there so others can listen and give you advice. That way you get better and then when you're more confident can be apart of the creative process? We don't really have that kind of intimacy with the community anymore and thats why I think alot of the art side is stale. Cus everyones doin their own shit and couldn't care less.

So what I mean about song by song is. You make a topic for the troubadours about making a song or a short EP with a few songs, see who is interested and what you can do instead of this whole album expectation shit (there aren't enough people really to do that anymore). People that release their own creative works should be added to the site (of course) and I think you should jump around through the topics of people releasing their practice songs or individual creative works and pick out one or a few you like every week (or month (depending on how dead we are)) and release them on your site.

I also think you should expand that site to literary/film/music though. Because we have (or have had) alot of people that are very talented in those other areas that were/are being ignored.

Also stuff like Bruce Genitals/Couch's albums/Old troubadours/psyburns music video should be added too if not already. As an example of what the community was/is capable of.

i know what he intends, and i'm not trying to declare it an impossible project. i'm just sayin that i see tensions between his goals, and they are visible in the design. it's entirely possible that i'm the only person that sees it that way, but it's better to post my opinion than not, no?

yeah, there's a lot of people that aren't around very often anymore that know a lot about music and have shared their knowledge freely. I think PTizzle might be the only person that has ever directly told me anything about making hiphop, and one of about three people that have told me anything about making music. As far as giving advice and criticism, I have always tried to offer whatever I can to people that want to know music stuff. If you look at my recent posting history in this subforum, I have frequently been the only person responding to a RFC or info request.  I think I was the only person who wrote a detailed response to your lyrics thread a while back, for example. On the 'doing something' end of things, I have put in as early as possible for the last few troubs, and yeah, it was disappointing that the last one went nowhere. I also put out a pretty mediocre 'album' that nobody has said anything about. I'm pretty sure it wasn't well received but I could not tell you why because I only have an inside view. Personally, I would like more judgment to be passed on my shit. I've improved since then but by my own criticism. There are less experts about these days, yeah. And that does hurt our progression as an artistic glob of chumps, but what else to do other than contribute as much as possible in every available format? I'm concerned that having something that seems more exposure-focused would hurt my ability to dick around and make songs.

I mean, if you want advice I got advice, If you need a beat I have beats, if it's crits then I have those too, and lyrics, but if you need someone better than me or two people then I can't help. I feel real bad that dicko's Artistry Weekly thing disappeared too. I would love to see it come back as a monthly deal. I only quit putting stuff in for it because I was having a tough time with my Hons year, which I subsequently quit since I already got a degree. I'm sure other people had their own reasons. That kind of stuff is useful and productive for the community because it's easy to get involved with and it puts our output on display in a local way.

I agree with your suggestion of slowing things down and working thing-at-a-time, but I also think it will be harder for some than others to do the whole collaboration thing. As far as lit, film, etc goes, I thought Ed was meant to be making a site for collab on that but idk if it's done or if it's going to be or what. He seemed to have a solid idea of the kind of design on a software end that would make it work  though.

oh I wasn't talking about you specifically and you do do alot dude. I'm gonna try when I get home and can actually listen to peoples stuff too.  I was talking about where we're going in general. I thought Ed was making glitchworks, is that what that is? I thought it was just an alternative to GW.

I could def use some beats when I get back though but I'll make a topic about it. Cus I think I got everything but the actual instrumental composition down now. I can rhyme and match rhytms way way better now. Without even trying sometimes. shit in my fuckin head

The font you see everywhere is some simple serif font i used in PS, that will all be replaced by your browsers default settings. And @Biggles, The last site was all communal and got nowhere. you need to have some commercialism some focus to be able to achieve any status/recognition.  I dropped deadlines on themes to make albums for the site. I (and other, later chosen staff) will post updates daily with tracks we where sent via Email / our Dropbox.  I intend to run most (if not all, if possible) music off Soundcloud. And I chose to focus on the ever expanding Electronic Music scene rather than all genres. to help settle a better niche.

The Logo 2 adjacent/reflected arrows, actually inspired by DJ Hero tbh. Its a incarnated re-design to the old logo.

Those 2 squares on the left, They will be Site Promotional spots, Random site oriented events/promos will be there.  It wont always be local (which actually, will become whichever cities the admin/staff live in) Event posters, and member Releases.  There will be like contests, interviews, and interesting articles on site advertised.  Below them will be a Soundcloud Shuffler (randomiser script plucking 3 artist names and soundcloud links from a bank of contributors

As for the city picture?  Yeah, should have cleared that up in the design.   Each time a staff posts, I'm getting them to post an image to go with each post. the posted image will reside in the background of the Title Box of each Blog post.  It can be anything, will be fitted into the background, and likely a link/focus bg button to open it up or send you to source site.

And the troubs play a big part of who I am and why I am making this site. This is why I would love and encourage all of you still wanting to make music, to submit to the site once it re-launches.
It may not be a Juicy Fruit Group Fun Time like the collabs and stories told from GWTroubadours , but its still a musical community waiting to bloom. with potential for a much wider audience and performers list.

And While you make music for enjoyment , for shits and giggles, for money, or for the experience of collaborating with people worldwide making wonderful tunes. Everyone dreams of being famous and signed. So yes I partially do intend to say Unsigned artists are ones who put a lot of time into their music in hopes of being picked up. and some of them are so great, they just need the right set of ears to hear their sound! I'd bend over to get picked up, funded recording time and payroll to legally buy all new software and hardware... But It's not the intention, doing it cause i love music and love helping the others like me looking  just for a group to hear and enjoy my sound.

Only money I'll be making from the site will be google ads, or the highly unlikely, occasional paid (site relevant) adblock on site.

with the Soundcloud shuffle graphic idea initiated, and a better clarification of the per post image system, its not all the same graphic, and im thinking (if implemented this way) of having a clickable Camera icon to see the full picture, likely in a lightbox. If not I'll be implementing a similar or some sort of image inclusion to each post.
