If you looked at the other site he had it wasn't just for exposure but communal purposes too? I think something like this is cool and could give the music side of whats left of GW a jumpstart if people put effort into it. There really is no community left here to do projects like that IE: why every single troubadour album for the past few years has either died or was pretty much just slapped together last minute. It doesn't seem "electronically geared" to me either. Yeah its flashy and isn't meant to appeal to just the higher educated, high browed crowed you get here. Which honestly is getting boring when you just have people passing judgement about shit all the time and not actually really doing anything. Like a bunch of fuckin xenophobes. We had people like couchfiend and ryan that would practice and show what they were doing and work with other people. Now you just got a select few that are left pretty much doin their own thing and not really developing as well imo?
i know what he intends, and i'm not trying to declare it an impossible project. i'm just sayin that i see tensions between his goals, and they are visible in the design. it's entirely possible that i'm the only person that sees it that way, but it's better to post my opinion than not, no?
yeah, there's a lot of people that aren't around very often anymore that know a lot about music and have shared their knowledge freely. I think PTizzle might be the only person that has ever directly told me anything about making hiphop, and one of about three people that have told me anything about making music. As far as giving advice and criticism, I have always tried to offer whatever I can to people that want to know music stuff. If you look at my recent posting history in this subforum, I have frequently been the only person responding to a RFC or info request. I think I was the only person who wrote a detailed response to your lyrics thread a while back, for example. On the 'doing something' end of things, I have put in as early as possible for the last few troubs, and yeah, it was disappointing that the last one went nowhere. I also put out a pretty mediocre 'album' that nobody has said anything about. I'm pretty sure it wasn't well received but I could not tell you why because I only have an inside view. Personally, I would like more judgment to be passed on my shit. I've improved since then but by my own criticism. There are less experts about these days, yeah. And that does hurt our progression as an artistic glob of chumps, but what else to do other than contribute as much as possible in every available format? I'm concerned that having something that seems more exposure-focused would hurt my ability to dick around and make songs.
I mean, if you want advice I got advice, If you need a beat I have beats, if it's crits then I have those too, and lyrics, but if you need someone better than me or two people then I can't help. I feel real bad that dicko's Artistry Weekly thing disappeared too. I would love to see it come back as a monthly deal. I only quit putting stuff in for it because I was having a tough time with my Hons year, which I subsequently quit since I already got a degree. I'm sure other people had their own reasons. That kind of stuff is useful and productive for the community because it's easy to get involved with and it puts our output on display in a local way.
I agree with your suggestion of slowing things down and working thing-at-a-time, but I also think it will be harder for some than others to do the whole collaboration thing. As far as lit, film, etc goes, I thought Ed was meant to be making a site for collab on that but idk if it's done or if it's going to be or what. He seemed to have a solid idea of the kind of design on a software end that would make it work though.
