it's p. commonly used in the US-of-A among the straights and gays alike.
Yes, but STRAIGHT is also currently used as a term across the globe (like you just have) to refer to heterosexuals, without considering the actual meaning of the word and its antonym - bent. That doesn't make it correct, or inoffensive really.
Like I'm not having a go at you for using it really, but I've spoken about this before. I understand that BLACKS is commonly used in the US also to refer to black people. I don't believe that it's correct to turn an adjective into a noun to refer to a group of people. You don't say fats, poors, disableds, or shorts to refer to individuals, why is it ok to do so in reference to sexuality or race?
Straight is actually something that bothers me a lot, due to the common way it is used. It denotes inherent prejudice in the use of the term itself. If you're straight, I'm bent. That's the opposite of that. And bent was an extremely negative word used commonly in the UK to refer to gay people. Fuck, some people still use it now.
"Gays" is a real pet peeve of mine though really. I've always hated its use - but then again, living in the UK rather than the US, I guess I don't have to encounter it too much at all. It only tends to be right-wing tabloids that use it here (referring to THE GAYS as a group etc).
