Actually he donates the profits from his restaurant chain towards right-wing organizations that actively work to subvert gay marriage legislation. It's not just about their CEO's personal views. They've donated millions of dollars already and will probably keep on doing it.
This was known before he made the comments that he made. Why hasn't this boycott happened before now? Because he made the dumb political/religious comments.
ON THE OTHER END (of which you'll agree with me)
Me and my dad an argument about how he went to purchase Chik-fil-a (basically him just shouting over me with me failing to get many words in at all). I said it was dumb to go out and buy chik-fil-a In response he said his reasons were anti-government censorship (said this pretty damn angrily) because some gov officials said they didn't want Chik-Fil-A in their town since the CEO of chik-fil-a said the vieled anti-gay things that he said and the gov officials said that was the reasons that they all did it, not because of their anti-gay sentiment. I know this is complete bullshit reason because my dad has never really rallied for anti-censorship in the past. This is just him thinking "huh all the right wingers are doing this! I'm a right winger! I should join them! Especially, since this is easy, and I get chicken!"
I say I know he's dumb for this. I read an article by this guy Noah Michelson. Said it better than I could say it myself:
I have a hard time believing that there would be lines around the block at Burger King if its CEO gave an interview where he or she stated, "I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage... black and white people should not be allowed to get married,'" and had also donated millions of dollars to white supremacist organizations.
Though perhaps scratch out the hate groups part because:
I also just had an argument with someone about the hate groups thing. She said that the groups that they send money to are dumb religious groups that push their religious agenda (oh hey basically every religious group ever). but hardly classify as actual hate groups. Like at least not on par with groups like the KKK or Westboro Bapists. If they are hate groups, so is 99% of christian churches. She also told me that their is a lot of misinformation. for instance. One of the groups Chik-Fil-A donates to is is the family research council. This is a group that mindlessly promotes their religious beliefs but they also did NOT try and push laws in Uganda to get gay's killed. In fact they pushed against it.
FRC does not support the Uganda bill, and does not support the death penalty for homosexuality -- nor any other penalty which would have the effect of inhibiting compassionate pastoral, psychological and medical care and treatment for those who experience same-sex attractions or who engage in homosexual conduct.
again. Obviously fucking crazy people. but not crazy murderous/violent people. *shrugs*
BOTH SIDES ARE WASTING THEIR TIME(edit with their methodology). If I wanted to avoid purchasing at a place because of their crappy dumb beliefs I'd be missing out on a lot of cool stuff. Since most of them have assholes running them. No more Sunny-D (OK, I already don't like the stuff but still), no more meat products, no more playing Activision or EA games, no more Nike shoes, etc. I don't because I like these products despite their CEO's generally being dicks (now or in the past).
Also I kind of regret having the argument with my dad because was apparently drunk and he is a stubborn irrational man-baby at the best of times when it comes to politics.
That's why people organized a day of support for them: to offset the lost revenue from the boycott, so that they can continue to spend money on fostering discrimination.
Even if there were people that would do so for such reasons, I somehow doubt most of them would be informed enough to make such a reason their main purpose in doing this. Sure their cited reason (First Amendment Rights!) Is very clearly bullshit. but even if it wasn't a bullshit reason, IT WOULD STILL BE A DUMB REASON TO BUY A COMPANIES PRODUCT EN-MASSE. That isn't how you change things politically. Its how you get delicious and unhealthy fast food.
I'm kind of hoping you didn't know about that fact because otherwise it's pretty awful that you've just called the LGBT activists and their allies "very very dumb" for standing up to this.
I feel that even the people with the best of intentions have their moments of dumbness. I support the LGBT community in so that I agree with them on the actual issue, that they should be allowed to legally marry. I don't agree with them on their methodology in this case.
To top it all off, individual managers and employees of Chik-Fil-A do not all share their beliefs with their almighty CEO. You guys have probably seen it but there is this video of some CFO driving up and harassing a Chik-Fil-A Employee and its pretty disgusting. I don't think their are a lot of LGBT people that would do that, I think he was probably a loner in that respect but GOD DAMN was he being a totally moronic asshole and obviously hurt his cause FAR MORE than he helped it.
The whole Chic-Fil-A support day, tiny as it may be in the grand scheme of things, is imo one of the most disgusting things I've seen in quite some time. People munching on chicken sandwiches so that gay people can continue to be mistreated. It's truly the American spirit condensed into its purest form.
Yeah tiny and fucking dumb. But you got to realize that their rational wasn't "I'm eating this because FUCK GAYS" It was "I'm eating this because I'm a good christian/republican". Which is pretty terrible in its own way.
You're joke/serious comment on American spirit is deflected by my anti-patriotic attitude and total apathy of national pride. I'm an American because I was born here and don't care to move, not something to be ashamed or proud of. I wish I could say that same about my dad if he read the comment.
If Chick-Fil-A hates gays then they don't want gay people money IMO. That money goes into some hateful ass shit I don't want to fund, and it's sad that your only rationale is "but their junky fast food chicken is so worth it..."
One of Chik-Fil-A's top dogs said it because he's an old religious nut. I'll admit I don't want to fund them either. but I'm not going out of my way to avoid their delicious chicken. I sorry, I mean have you ever HAD their chicken? Even if you have and did not care for it (AGH WHAT), its pretty unique. I'd be hard pressed to find an alternative, let alone one within a reasonable driving distance. Don't be reductive/dismissive by calling it "junky fast food chicken".
http://www.owldolatrous.com/?p=288 Mei posted this on FB, well worth a read.
I'll read it when I can (probably today).
I'm sure I have plenty of holes in my argument and I didn't say everything I wanted to due to a bit of fatigue. /excuse
EDIT: Fixed some grammar/readability issues.
