My parents are absurdly supportive but I've still got a lot of internalized homophobia from the rest of my rural Kentucky environment.

By the way, I'd just like to say that I'm glad you decided to come out (to others: not that I knew) and I hope this is a load off your shoulders. I'm 100% supportive and I'm sure everybody else here is! Obviously this doesn't mean you're out irl but it's a major step, and I hope you feel better now that you've said it.
I'm pretty surprised nobody else mentioned anything, actually. Maybe they all think "she's obv already out and this isn't news otherwise she wouldn't have said it so casually"?

I actually didn't pick up on the fact that this was the first time Vel has publicly stated it. It didn't register with me at all lol, because I assume if I know something then it isn't news lol.

But yeah, big kudos and shit. I don't want to make too big a deal of it as this'll turn into a 50 posts of embarrassing vellfire thread by constantly mentioning it over and over lol, but big, big kudos. It takes a lot of moxy to come out and shit. And yes, I know it isn't to like your offline community at large, but it certainly still is to a community of people that you know.

PS: dada they didn't mention it/post because, like me, it wasn't about them personally, thus they didn't retain it as information. It's the same reason as I stopped coming to these forums right around the time they made it really hard to search for "faust" and get all the posts.
Hey hey hey

oh yeah I didn't even think about it/probably don't want it to be a big thing but congrats
Yeah I'd agree for sure. Like I actually encountered a lot of prejudice (as weird as it sounds) at a gay gamer forum due to being positive about aspects of religious faith. Like there were a couple of posters who made me think "Fuck this place", so I ended up leaving. Note: I wasn't defending intolerant beliefs, defending freedom of speech, or defending like anyone's right to be offensive. I was merely saying that there are certain religious faiths who aren't actively homophobic (for example, my rabbi is one of the major campaigners in this country for gay marriage, and like I'm reform Judaism [which is the equivalent of conservative judaism US], so you can imagine what the liberals and progressives think)!

Unfortunately, obviously due to their own dealings with certain religious people previously, that fell on deaf ears and it became a whole "are you with us or against us" vibe. I could understand it if I professed to being fiercely Catholic, or a hardcore Baptist like the Westboro peeps, but sadly I'm lumped in with those guys just because I (MAYBE ILLOGICALLY!?!) believe in G-d.

Gay people can be just as shitty and prejudiced, as can any individual from a group of other individuals. But at the end of the day, those people are individuals who believe hateful things. Not every Christian is a homophobe, not every homophobe is a Christian.

I mean your point about the civil rights movement makes a lot of sense too in the context of modern gay rights in the UK. Like in a lot of debates I have with Daily Mail forumgoers, the emphasis is placed on how bad Saudi Arabia/Iran are for killing gay people. Which is fair, and both DM right wingers and myself are in agreement on that. But when it comes to rights in the UK, the whole vibe is "WE DON'T ARREST YOU ANY MORE, STOP FUCKING MOANING ABOUT RIGHTS, YOU HAVE ALL THE RIGHTS YOU NEED BECAUSE WE GAVE THEM TO YOU" lol. In fact, someone just earlier posted pretty much exactly that in response to the idea that just because gay people are a "tiny" minority doesn't mean we deserve LESS rights because of it.

PS: I remember, in the GAYGAMER forum debacle, one of the mods weighing in to post "Well done everyone for keeping this so civil, let's make sure it continues to be as respectful as it has been, good job so far".

This was after I'd been called pathetic, ridiculous, ill-educated, and naive without actually insulting anyone lol. VERY CIVIL GUYS XD!!!
oh yeah, it's extremely rough when you're already part of a minority group, and then you're rejected even within that society. like even on the internet it's a really bad experience and esp since the internet seems to turn people into ruthless assholes

and yeah I see that stuff still goes on (re: it's them not us).  uhhh we're the heros, don't say there's anything wrong with us

p. much the only reason i was willing to even say it is because it's really really hard to talk about issues like this while pretending that they don't personally affect me and i;m tired as heck of skirting around it and i feel like i'm not gonna be able to keep it up irl much longer either;;;;;;;;;;;; hi welcome to my life

Yeah you mentioned it casually enough in your post that I honestly thought such news was already out in the open. :P Either that or I thought it was possible that I as misreading your post. "Oh hey pretty sure she just said she's a lesbian or bi, huh"

But yeah. Yeah, I imagine it takes a lot to come out in any environment. So yeah good for you.

Also, if my brother is gay or bi he definitely has PLENTY of internalized homophobia. Though arguably not all that much because of my parents, but rather the area we live in is full of redneck/hick/hill-billy cliquely homophobic trash. (Southern Indiana, like 40 minutes from Florence, KY I think but I'm not good at navigating or knowing where the fuck I am)

He hangs out with this kid named Brad who openly says he doesn't like Obama because he's black and says nigger but defends his use of it as "oh white people can be niggers too! And I don't like them." Suffice to say he's not very smart but has an odd knack influencing my brother who usually ardently resists such manipulation. My brother basically just agrees with everything he says. My mom used the word "bromance" when brad was around and brad stopping coming over for like a week straight (he was basically at our house every day before that point) My mom thinks Brad might be gay too but I really doubt it.

Also my brother's got a pretty bad temper and throws crazy fits. Misplaced his smart phone (later found it in the grass where he works) and had a temper tantrum about it running around the house yelling and screaming about it. So IDK how he'd react if someone were to accidentally confirm that he was in fact gay or bi.

I've noticed this as well. In my city there's a bit of a vibrant gay community in a certain part of town(one that's almost fully gentrified now as it used to be somewhat of a trashy/sketchy place to live, but now has condos erecting at breakneck speed while the young/bohemian types that made it a desirable place are being priced out of neighborhood) and I hang with some LGBTQ ppl there sometimes getting some peeks at the dynamics of the 'gay-scene'. A few bisexual friends sorta express the same sentiment about not being taken seriously, men especially, in their relationships with ppl who swing one way or the other. The common perception of gay men is of these hypersexual beings and I've had buddies say how their straight partners see this as a sort of predisposition to cheating/infidelity while their gay partners feel like the relationship is some kind of 'experiment' or non-committal in some way. I think on both ends its kind of a general anxiety in all relationships, because none of us can fully climb into each others' minds, compounded with being with someone who's sexuality/gender preferences span a wider gradient than one's own.

I imagine it's probably similar with women/non-male-bodied ppl but being a str8-white-married-b0i i have a sorta awkwardness about prying into that with them that i don't have with my dudebros.

anyone watch Antiques Roadshow right now they're running old episodes and telling if the item went up or down in value, and the sound effect for the value going down is like the most disappointing/upsetting sound I've ever heard

FML my bro just got home and the oil lamp/Idiot light/oil pressure light (whatever you want to call it) came on it starts to rain I check the oil it's low in fact lower then I would like to see it. I had bit of 30-5w laying around so I was going to put some in and do something about it when I got to advanced auto's. But I was trying to open the cap and the whole fucking thing came off other then the gasket of the cap so now I need to wait till tomorrow to do it. when there is more light and obviously a cap and gasket to replace it.

Since I'm at it I might as well get that oil drain plug(it's leaking),filter (since i was neglecting to do it and will be down there anyways) and a water pump since I'm planing to do it this month (since it's weeping out my coolant and summer will end soon and water in the engine during winter will be like a death sentence) and hope nothing else is wrong with the oil or since (or anything that may make me lose more oil Since I don't know why it dropped so fast and can't imagine it was the plug since it's a slow leak ) that lamp came up hope there is no damage.

Also barely read this so good luck reading it since I think the sentence structure sucks at the moment since im pissed and made this fast.

Curiosity is landing very shortly on Mars. If you are awake, may be worth watching the NASA live feed for. http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html

It'll be happening in a less than 40 minutes. So, yeah, kind of short notice. Going post this on the IRC as well I guess.

Somewhat also interesting a Google+ hangout is apparently going on ATM precisely about this:
