Alright... I am thinking about starting an RPG Maker Archive Project.... I understand that maybe it directly conflicts with the Rare RPG Maker Request thread in a way, but, I am looking for a new direction to draw some of the rarer games out...
Basically, how it works if you want to participate, we will trade lists and we will go through each other's game lists. Find what we want, then we will each upload them. Basically trading I guess.
Now, the question is, do I actually have any rare games?
The answer is.... I have no idea. I have about 2,140 games which are organized. I have another, I guess 300, which are randomly assorted. They might be repeats... I have no idea. They basically came from me bulk downloading from directories that I wasn't sure if they would be around for a while. I figured, it would be more useful for me to have things that I don't know what they are, rather than risking on missing out.
Basically, the easiest way to do this is to use http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptdirprn.asp - which is Karen's Directory Printer. It allows you to export a list of everything in a folder to a text file, as well as subfolders, and all that if you choose..
Hopefully, there is an interest around here. If not, I guess I will find another place to conduct this. Thank you for your time.

I don't see the point but it would be great to just post all the links as I doubt most have something to exchange for every rare game you have.

Yeah, it would be great. I think you misunderstand the point though. First off, I have no idea what is rare and what is not. At a later date, perhaps I will probably upload in bulk.
What I am trying to accomplish is, maybe by doing it like this, I can get someone that usually wouldn't go through their game list, to finally actually throw something together. Maybe it will lead back to things getting released to the community that very few people have. =) I will still upload for you guys, if you have a request. But, the goal of this is more a bulk deal.
Like, I most likely won't upload you 3GB worth of games just for the hell of it. Maybe a lot of other people won't either. But, if I create incentive, maybe I can draw something out. I kinda figured people might not get the point. I hope someone understand what I am trying to accomplish.
I will use an example. Think about it in terms of the "NoIntro" project, except in terms of RPG Maker. I don't think I will ever actually manage to get things to that point, but that is what I am thinking in my head.

i have so so few (targ games, barkley prototype, probably nothing else) so i can't really help with supplying games, BUT:

you really should sort it all out and create a torrent! that would be very very valuable. i don't really see the point in "trading," individual to individual. (but this is a good idea).

Torrent really isn't a bad idea. Well, to an extent it isn't.
Excuses time:
I only have very limited upload. Like, 60kbps. It would take forever for a huge torrent collection to finish.
Now, let's suppose I fully upload it to a couple people. If they snatch and jump off, then we are back right where they started. Torrents are good when what you are sharing is popular. I believe RPG Maker games are a niche, and rare games are even more of a niche, which is why they are rare, right?
Honestly, I think the best way for retention is to upload to either megaupload or mediafire. I prefer megaupload, but they are both pretty lenient file hosts. Why people upload hard to find stuff on filefront I will never know....
But, maybe you are right to an extent. Maybe trading RPG Maker Games from individual to individual is foolish. Maybe I can leave it open some more. I will explain my thinking a little better, cause I had better time to think upon it...
The problem with the Rare RPG Maker Game Request thread is it only works if you know what you are looking for. Well, I am into archiving. So, most of the time I have no idea what I want, I archive it on my externals for a later date and hopefully it will have a use for me later in some way.
What I was hoping to accomplish is that I would find some people with decent to big collections that were also looking to archive, or maybe even to just fill some gaps in their collection. I was thinking maybe opening up my collection in that way would maybe give someone an incentive to look into it.
Now, maybe instead of doing that, maybe i'll open it up some and make it more public. Here is what I will do. I am going to post an older copy of my list. I made this copy this month, so anything new I added really isn't that rare and you can most likely find it.
If people will help me on my archive project, then i'll upload requests from it. If people are actually interested in what I have. I am doing this more in the line of preserving the history of RPG Maker than anything.
So, first... Here is the list..

Hopefully you understand what the hell I am talking about. I am too tired to proofread. I'll answer anything else when I come back. Oh, btw... I have foreign games on that list. But, when I was organizing, I used the google translated version of the names. So, hate me for that.

File host sucks. Just find a temporary free web host server and upload it so we could donwload with direct links.

this is really nice. did you do all the labeling? this is the kind of thing that needs to be done. you know, a file-hosting site like rpgmaker.net et al is convenient, but even a big (hyperlinking, maybe wiki-styled) text directory would be very desirable. i hope you can come up with people to assist you in a torrent or a massive host, but even having this list up somewhere and organized by author, format, etc. would rule.

additionally: i would host a big game torrent indefinitely.

but also consider: a torrent or direct-downloaded comprehensive archive of everything on your list that houses the rpg_rt, map files, readmes, and saves for all of these games, omitting resources (the things that take up space). this would be a fraction of the file size.

here is where i bring up a tool that i can no longer find through google search. i know people have used it, i know that even i have mentioned it on these forums a long time ago. this guy named WhoopA (who i think, unfortunately, is dead, unless it was a hoax) made a "dependency scanner" that you could use to scan your rpgmaker games to make sure that all the files they required were actually present in the game directory. so before you uploaded your game, if you were missing grapesoldier.png from your CharSet folder, it would let you know. i cannot count how many games i downloaded in the past where a file ended up missing halfway through... usually what i would do is just replace whatever it asked for with any random charset, midi, or anything else from my computer, just to get the game continuing again.

in old games where you cannot ask the author for a fix, or where multiple things are broken (the existence of the very misguided "RTP 1.32" that many people used as a replacement of their RTP folder really exacerbated this), the dependency scanner would prove to be very useful. i could see that there were 3 facesets, 1 battle background, and 2 midis missing, all at once, and replace them instead of doing it through trial-by-error.

digression over with now: what i mean to say is that use of a similar tool could create lists of the resources needed for every game, and a program could be created that could download them on a game-by-game basis. given the nature of resources in rpgmaker projects, this would eliminate a significant number of duplicates (you only need to host Mac & Blue chips once). you could even make the program be a frontend for loading up this same constant resources torrent and selectively downloading the needed resources within it.

this is MAYBE(PROBABLY) a stupid idea but i am just trying to suggest a method that would make this easier for everyone involved. if there is one thing i know about rpgmaker sites, it's that they regularly die/dissolve/implode/cause severe depression in the owner. being solely responsible for maintaining a navigable website (with forums lol), paying for bandwidth, etc... nobody really wants to do that (and the people who do are weirdo rpgmaker narcissists :O). it would also ensure the preservation of ~the game itself~ for hundreds and hundreds of games. without resources, sure, but those can be filled in later!

holy shit its bort. where have you been dude?

Yeah bort. I did all the labeling myself. That is why this has been such a time sink for me and I am tired of working on it alone. If I just downloaded a bunch of stuff and kept it unorganized, it wouldn't be a problem, but then I have no idea what I have.
Let me discuss what I label it like that though. Used to, I would keep all my rpg maker games in folders. So, my directory would be something like RPG Maker\2000\Author's Name, yada yada.
The problem with that approach is you have to keep folder changing when you are downloading, and, if you are unsure of what RPG Maker version the game is, you have to keep an unknown folder. Well, what if you have already downloaded the game though and you have no idea? Well, if you keep them all in one main game folder, when you are typing out the name, you know immediately what you have. Maybe there are some downsides to that approach, but it works out good for me.
Also, people hate on megaupload and ddl sites and want the hotlinks... I think the people who do that are downloading the hard way. Use a program called "mipony". Basically, it will detect all ddl links on a site and put them into a queue. With some ddl sites, a captcha pop-up window will appear where you have to type something in. But, with megaupload, you don't have any of that and you have unlimited downloading every, I think hour, of up to 3GB.
Also, your idea of having a program that detects what resources are missing and downloads them is not a bad idea. But, I believe with the current affairs of things, that it isn't that viable. The main problems being, getting together the resources that are missing, making lists of what the games need to have, having a server to host everything, then of course the coding of the program. I mean, if people would actually work together on it, then I guess it wouldn't be so bad. But, the two or three people doing the whole thing is overkill.
Personally, I have no interest in resource gathering. Maybe, if someone else cares about that, they can work on that project. Game gathering for me is enough of a time sink as it is. So far, it has been a solo job, and it looks like it still is a solo job. The only other person that actually keeps a quite decent collection that I know of is SegNin.
Anyway, that is enough of my train of thought at the moment. I'll try to check back in later tonight and see if there is something else I need to answer.

Your idea would work if RMTool was 100% reliable.

Unfortunately it's not.

1) It only scans for filenames, not file extensions or their MD5 or CRC values. So, it can't tell which of the hundreds of different resources all named "fire1" is supposed to go with a particular game.

2) It can't scan games that have been locked with Rast's project locker or have been hacked in a similar manner to prevent being loaded in the editor.

3) It does not recognize the resources in the Battle2 folder that comes with most RM2K3 games. So, when you scan RM2K3 games it will show that those resources are missing even when they aren't. Therefore, if you use the Import, it will fail to add any of those missing resources that belong in the Battle2 folder.

4) It doesn't always correctly recognize whether a game is RM2000 or RM2003, so if you Import, it will try to import from the wrong RTP.

5) Occasionally the scan will fail because there are map files that are not compatible with the tool--noticed this happens, for instance with large map files that contain events with a lot of #Comments when you view them in the editor.

6) If any resources have filenames that use foreign letters/characters, then it will show them as gobbledygook, making it impossible to Import or even tell what those resources should be.

7) Occasionally, it will fail to notice when a resource is missing, or falsely report that one is needed when it's not.

8) For RM2000 games that have been hacked to play mp3's, if an mp3 is missing but the fake .wav file** that points the exe to that mp3 is in the Music folder, then RMTool will fail to recognize that the mp3 is missing.

**(that fake wav file is actually a text file with a wav extension)

The only way your idea is feasible is if someone creates a new scanning/import tool--one without all these flaws.

Just so we're clear, your idea bort is an awsome idea. Unfortunately, right now we don't have the tools we need to make it work.

You might also want to talk to some of the folks at http://meridiandance.org/ They would know of a couple of good games to add to this list. Very creative bunch.
I could be over critical, but I think you could re-do the story to sound less boring and more interesting for people to read. It's like, a wall of boring events that nobody cares enough to read.
It would be better to strive for the 'essence' of what you are trying to depict, and not think in a practical or literal sense. Just think about the origin of what you want to direct what you want your audience to feel.
