I heard a similiar story from a second mate about dilapitated old fishing (?) vessel that some cubans were trying to use to get to the states. It was barely afloat and the people aboard were at risk of drowning so the ship he worked on took them aboard and they were all commended for saving the would be immigrants.
Dude said several months (possibly a year) later he was working back and forth in the same waters and came accross the very same vessel still adrift.
Its incredible how some of those ships can keep going even without anyone manning them for so long.
