This might be a stupid question, I don't know, but I was thinking about some ways to make some extra money before I go on exchange after summer and I don't want to get a second job doing any kind of retail/services bullshit  so I was trying to think of some stuff I could do here and there to make money.

Maybe not just scrap metal, scrap anything. I'm not expecting to make much, or anything like that, but I was looking around on the internet and it's difficult to tell if this is something you can just do if you happen to find a decent amount of scrap or if you really need some expertise which I don't have obviously. Even if nobody's done it, do you know anyone who has or anything about this kind of thing? It seems like a decent idea from a distance, I could probably do it alone and just whenever it suited me. I know this is the kind of thing homeless and short on work people do to make some money, so I figured there must be something to it even if it turns out a lot less than minimum wage. Anyway, I'm just curious.

Holy crud there's a whole scene dedicated to this.

Also I found this for you. It seems pretty well-written and informative.

Semper scrap!

Yeah but its always for like housing projects and stuff where my pops was rebuilding an aluminum roof or something at told me to take the scrap to a local junkyard.

Best thing to do is go near construction sites and businesses with stuff like a/c installation or roofing or something and take whatever they throw away. Copper is good too you can get it from AC units and piping and you can strip it from electrical wiring.

My brothers make some money on the side taking the copper out of old A/C units and stuff from their jobs (they install AC) and their buddy is an electricians assistant or something and they kind of pool their copper together and strip it and sell it because doing that is kind of time consuming.

Methheads and crackheads steal a lot of copper from telephone lines and underground cables and stuff like that to sell it and I'm pretty sure a few of them have died because of it because they dumb as shit.

We get a tone of pikey's coming to my workplace stealing all the scrap metal they can get their hands on including over 15 empty kegs and a metal gate, ironically the same gate which we use to lock the kegs up in.

There must be some money in it if your going to go through the trouble off running off with that many kegs, they are heavy as sh*t.

When I was 13 I sold copper at a local scrapyard - my brother and I collected it.

The trick with scrap is you need a fair amount of it to be worth your while, but if you want to dedicate a few hours a day hitting alternate garbage route pick-ups and filling a a cab or two with scrap, by all means.

Wouldn't recommend it though, shitty work.

where are you going to find the scrap? you may be better off selling junk you find online or something. scrap metal only seems worth it if you've got valuable metal (copper or g-g-g-gold) or if you've got something huge you want to get rid of (old pianos and cars)

I've sold scrap metal before and know a little about it. My dad does junk removal from time to time and I help him when he needs another hand. Occasionally he gets a job involving a lot of metal and sells it as scrap. The big problems I see with scrap metal are sources and sorting.

For sources, you'll need to have a decent amount of places to get metal from if you want to make any money. This is going to take a lot of legwork to figure out good places to get metal. Also realize that a lot of this is heavy as hell. You may need more than one person to carry some of this stuff back with you.

About sorting, this is basically where you make all the money on scrap metal. You need to take stuff apart, be able to identify metals well, and stockpile it while you wait for it to accumulate. For instance, if you have a truck full of metal, you'll get paid the lowest rate even if you have a lot of valuable metals in there because it's unsorted.

All this said, junk removal is something I'd recommend in your situation if there's a decent market for it where you live and you have a truck. Throw an ad on whatever craigslist type service people use in your area and you're good to go.
