Farren you're not being a dick at all, just a stone cold realist.

You're missing one of the fundamental aspects of university though - it isn't solely (and shouldn't have ever been viewed as) a way to propel your career. A large section of it is focused on building YOURSELF, studying something you're passionate about, and basically maturing from child to adult in an environment that allows for mistakes to be made without huge repercussions.

University USED to be considered to be about self betterment, becoming more skilled in a field. It's in no way an entirely vocational pursuit.

That being said, university is a LOT more expensive here than it is in the UK, so if you're not going in order to get qualifications for a job it's not worth it for a lot of people financially.

I hear what you're saying, but it comes down to the idea of "worth" again. I believe higher education should be free for all at the point of use (however impractical that is), and it really sucks that many people DO in fact see it as not "worth" it because they'll be in debt and shit.

Sometimes we should do things because we enjoy them or because they better us in some way, not just for the financial benefits. We get one life and shit. Although I guess that's an easier position to take when you're not starving and relying on your big break in order to get medical cover or whatever.

Our system doesn't leave graduates with "crippling debt" thankfully. It leaves them with a loan which they never have to repay, which the government syphons off a tiny fraction of your wages to go towards, and only IF you earn a certain amount of money.

I currently have around £48k worth of debt based around higher education. I pay maybe £200 a year off that? It in no way cripples me, nor does it any graduate under our system thankfully.

I have many OTHER crippling debts however which aren't specifically related to higher education, which have been accrued following other forms of self-improvement or enjoyment. I don't regret them either because they did indeed involve self-betterment, or I enjoyed the shit out of what I used the money for.

I'd always advocate spending money to enjoy your life OR gain more qualifications (even if they are self-indulgent) at the expense of immediate financial stability. Plus it gives you an addition number of years to decide what you actually want to DO with your life, rather than just immediately and suddenly being an adult and having to work.

That's pretty amazing if true man. Like here they had a scheme for a while where your debt got cancelled if you became a teacher in an extreme shortage subject (basically Science or Maths).

Being an English teacher primarily means you don't even get a 'Golden Hello' (a payment of £2.5-£5k to say WELLCUM TO BEIN A TEACHAR) because it's like "You are ten a penny, now fight in this arena for a job >:O!".

Everyone gots a English degrees ;_;!

I think thats only if you enlist but I'm not sure about that.

Thats the thing and the main reason I didn't go myself because I didn't know what I wanted to learn about and couldn't afford it. Yeah you can get student loans and pay them off over time but that shit fucks your credit up, most young people have horrible credit rates because of that shit.

My credit is really good because of that and I could prolly get approved to buy a private jet now.

if you're american you're doomed. just give up. you have no options.

realtalk for mkk:  financial aspect aside, don't go to college thinking you know what you want to do.  you're likely to trap yourself in something you don't really want to do.  maybe you do want to do this, i'm not saying you don't!  but nearly everyone i know has changed their mind about what they wanted to do when they got to college.  chances are whatever intro classes you need for this major can count towards some sort of gen ed requirements so don't feel like I HAVE COMMITTED MYSELF TO THIS FOREVER BY TAKING A CLASS.  my biggest regret in college is not exploring other options and staying in the major i did in the beginning.  gen ed requirements mean you're going to be taking classes outside your major anyway, so use those to explore other fields you might be interested in.  you may discover you like them more!  just don't limit yourself, you're going to be changing a lot over the next few years.

good luck grrl ;-)

This is so true. I spent a few years of my initial degree studying LAW before I thought "This is way lame". My partner went initially went a focus on Literature rather than Music, and ended up focusing his career and degree on the latter. My best friend went to do CULTURAL STUDIES and ended up being a Theatre Studies major. Go figure!

Like I ended up doing Lit, but I totally wish I'd have done a History degree. I mean, I love Literature, and at the time it WAS pretty fantastic, but I didn't acknowledge my actual passion until I made the realisation "Whoa shit, all I ever do is focus on context for this shit, go figure".

Well mkkmypet I guess the bottomline of this topic is that you're doomed to be miserable your entire life and have a pointless existence in general because you're probably going to invest a lot of time and money into an useless degree like liberal arts which you'll have no real way to pay for once you're done with it and you'll end up flipping burgers just to pay interest.

I don't even understand why in a developed country like US, that can spend a lot of money on stupid pursuits like foreign aids, you have to PAY instead of being subsided with tax dollars to be educated into trivial shit like "the fine arts" or "philosophy". It's like you're better off being a welder  and reading about teh fine arts on wikipedia.

yep. half of my friends switched including me, and those that stayed their course are either regretting it or trying to change direction in a master's. i was in biotechnology for a couplea years but didn't want to do boring research into microscopic bacteria errday so now i'm in architecture, which is at least a real applied profession out of school (if ur good enough). and I'm actually happy and enjoying what i'm doing!

Earlchips in my university there are a bunch of people in architecture who come from developed countries to live in here just because every futuristic thing that could be done was done a long time ago in their countries but not here. You have options. You don't have to be the 99% unless you want to be miserable like everyone else.
