It's fun for you because it's just a thought exercise on your end.

So you posted it to make the specific point of how not funny it was?

Great line of thinking. I enjoy watching how well that is working out for you.
eh? you've got it wrong. It's the other way round.

Well, it does seem like we go through one of these arguments about every other time a old face shows up.

it's fun for you too, because it's your chance to disagree with someone about something, apparently

Yeah I sure am arguing with this because I love arguing, not because slurs are a part of my life I have to actually deal with on a regular basis.  Unlike you, I actually have real-life investments in this area, which is why I argue it so hard.  I don't have the privilege of not caring about it.

e: Your biggest problem throughout this whole thing is that you think that your life experiences are the same as everyone else's, so you can't see how any of this actually matters to others.

and I'm wondering now if you guys also disapprove Louis CK's use of slurs in the youtube provided
not really. he's just doing a cheaper, less hypnotic version of what carlin used to do. i mean he's just obviously riffing on language. not particularly well, but this is just kinda stupidly innocent to the point where i think it'd be a waste of time getting bent out of shape over it.

i don't know about the whole pc debate though. sure, i get it, and i totally rally behind the idea of eradicating the words faggot or retard and all the other definitely offensive words from our cultural lexicon, but i think i'm a little too jaded to think that this effort is practically worthwhile on the case-by-case level. yeah, if you see someone say faggot or cunt unironically or casually with any regularity, it's probably responsible to say something about it, as it's sometimes helpful to have someone point out when you're a total fucking moron. the context of that suggests that this person doesn't have their linguistic shit completely together and probably could use some help in becopming less id;iot

but i guess there's a limit to how incensed i can really get over this issue. i hear people say all kinds of dumb shit all the fucking time. there aren't enough hours in the day for me to begin trying to correct it all. this is doubly true for people i actually wish to have some sort of worthwhile relationship with. people usually don't fucking care that i have some hangup on some dumb shit that they say or casually think, so i usually go out of my way to keep that shit to myself unless i find that thing reaching some tangible problem-area.

i guess i grew out of that micromanaging the horrors of the world phase. the world is too irredeemable for me to muster up a whole lot of enthusiasm on these sorts of minor subjects.

honestly i can't find the energy to fight it most places because it literally is everywhere, but this is one place where i won't put up with it because as fuckin stupid as it feels to say this this place is my internet home and if there's ever a place i wanna be comfortable AND have other people be comfortable it's here

I have been talking about this with some people on IRC but I feel like I wanna post about it here:  there have been a few people messaging me on twitter in the last several months who ask me why I go here.  People that I didn't even know were aware of this place existing.  They saw a lot of the shit we used to tolerate and had no idea why I would support such a gross place.  Of course, it's because I know that most of us here don't approve of that shit.  The problem was not enough people were actually doing anything about it.  We do have people watching us guys, and we've probably missed out on a lot of members in the past because we didn't have our shit together.  If that means I gotta keep having the same arguments with different members over this stuff I will, but I don't want this place to be somewhere I'm embarrassed to say I belong to.  I don't wanna have to keep coming up with dumb excuses about how this place is starting to shape up, and how people need to just ignore the way we used to be.  It feels sometimes like we're pretty anonymous as a community because we don't get a lot of new members but based on what I've been told by people we aren't getting them because of some seriously bad shit we used to let slip.  This was a bit ago and we've all done better since, but it wasn't so long ago that we can pretend like it's a non-issue.  If we actually want to be a positive, thriving community, we have to actually show that we're going to make this place a welcoming site where we don't put up with gross bigotry that pollutes the shit out of the place.

That's cool Vellfire. Care to tell me what kind of real life investment you are involved in? I'm genuinely interested.

You are also correct to say that my life experiences aren't the same as, say, yours.
I think that's pretty obvious.
But it's a good point. Which might be why I can laugh at Louis CK and you hate it because you think he's being disrespectful and un-empathetic to the minorities involved.

also Hundley, I think I learnt the word faggit from you... :^P

I'm a queer woman, I have to deal with slurs in real life from both of those angles.  Slurs like cunt and dyke aren't just thought exercises for me to mull over on the internet, they're real things said to me with the intent to further alienate me from society.  They're the sorts of things that get shouted when this happens very near my hometown, to someone that could easily have been me instead.  They aren't just words, and when someone who is affected by them tells you this, you should listen to them instead of just tell them they should learn to laugh at themselves because hey, Straight White Male Comedian is laughing at them already.

yeah you should move to San Francisco or Brighton... or over here if you want, we're liberal as fuck and gay marriage is legal.

USA conservatives are very difficult people. Those people just don't have the empathy to accept those who are different to them.
Which is different to those who are more libertarian like myself, are more prone to laugh off at labels and slurs

Yeah it's not like you were in this topic defending slurs, let me just take life advice from you on what I should do to feel safer.  Spoiler: I'd still have something to worry about in all of those places.  The problem isn't Kentucky.

Also lol that you think "conservatives" is the answer to this, it's not like people farther left aren't also frequently racist/sexist/homophobic/etc.  Blaming it on conservatives is just an easy way to ignore the fact that this problem is incredibly widespread.

And again, it's not my job to "laugh off" slurs, I'm not the one to blame for slurs.  You're in here defending the use of them for the sake of "humor", don't tell me I'm supposed to just laugh them off when you yourself can't even bring yourself to stop finding them just so dang hilarious.

the big cities and uni cities welcome diversity much more than smaller towns with a more conservative culture
