Yeah man, some people make games and SELL them too!

As a side note, anyone bought any of the Rpgmaker games being sold on Steam? I've bought all of them, just need to find time to play them haha.

I only have To the Moon and only because it was included in a bundle.

People on Steam are where I was ten years ago before I learned RPG Maker games are generally bad, only it's going to cost them.

Absolutely not. Most of them are extremely generic JRPG garbage. I'm amazed anyone buys them. A lot of them are actually using 100% default RTP graphics and charging $10-$20 for a game. I remember a couple games that were posted on here many years ago where the creators said they intended to charge for them and most people shot them down. Back then trying to sell your RPG Maker game was heresy, even if you were using original assets.

Honestly I think the direction the RPG Maker scene has gone these days is downright disgusting, or maybe I'm just clinging to the old ways too much. Pretty much everyone using RPG Maker VX Ace is using default RTP all the time. I can't stand the way that RTP looks with the tiny characters and blocky chipsets. The program itself costs 70 fucking US dollars which is pretty outrageous. Not to mention the troves of downloadable music and graphics, some of them costing $30. Every modern day RPG Maker game I've seen looks exactly the same and the rampant use of the disgusting RTP is killing creativity and originality.

It would change everything if they simply let users put their own RPG Maker downloadable content up for sale instead of just the games. It'd add variety, give incentive to produce MORE non-rtp content, and people would be far more discerning about the level of quality and value they are actually getting out of their DLC purchases.

People paying actual money to have MORE rtp graphics? These are truly, truly sad times we are living in.

I remember there was this pretty awesome site that let you make your own chipsets.  It gave options for faces, clothes, hats, etc.

But to be fair, we were using pirated software.  I don't think there was a single one of us who actually paid for RM2K.  We were able to make these games for free, so charging people to play our games would have been pretty disgusting back then.  But now the indie scene is so huge and potentially profitable, it wouldn't make sense for someone to put months of work into something to give away for free.

I'm not saying it's better or right at all, but at least society for the most part is taking the indie game scene seriously.

Xanqui, you just summed up the significant differences between then and now.

Nothing I saw from the community back in the day was anything near 'To The Moon' and, as you also point out, was made using a pirated engine.

I'm a huge fan of the change in direction, as now we're actually getting some quality products worth paying for and playing.

Holy moley, roley poley (never had a chance to say that till now), lot's of old faces, feels like a GW revival, but I doubt it.

By the way, you can buy RPGMK VX for like £14 on humble bundle store and about a week ago (finished a few days ago I think) you could get VX, XP a bunch of games and graphic assets for like $12.
That said there's a whole bunch of free engines and it's now so easy (compared to before) to build your own it hardly seems worth the the money to buy either VX or XP, especially if you can code in ruby.

p.s. goldenratio, I hate you, the part of london I live in is even more of dung-heap then it used to be

Is there a reason a lot of the old GW members are coming back, or have we never left and just decided now to show ourselves again?

Shit Man, this place contained a nice big chunk of my life back in my early teens; I drop by for a yearly visit to salute.

Have you guys considered maybe starting a subreddit or anything that's more internet 2.0? As an extension to this place, reddit doesn't do communities as well as good old message boards
