Well, I'm not sure if I really agree with the idea that I have a stake. Scotland's independence would affect me, but not really. Not enough that anyone here would actually feel intrinsically motivated to think about it very much. To me, the key issue remains that the Scottish people don't have enough say over their lives. They want more autonomy. That's generally a good thing. There will be consequences, and that's for them to think about.

I do believe they have an obligation to ensure that those whose living conditions are in part based on the Scottish contributions to the union don't have to suffer as a result, to the point that it's fair. It shouldn't be a matter of just shoving out the poor people.

The question on the ballot is going to be a straight in and out rather than further devolution though. Scotland as a region currently has a lot more say over the Scottish people's lives than the Midlands has over Midlander lives, or the South West has over South Western lives, or even Wales has over Welsh lives - the Welsh Regional Assembly has less powers than the Scottish Regional Parliament. They don't have complete autonomy of course, but no region here does. That's the option on the ballot though - a complete split rather than devolution max.

I do fully agree that they should be granted a referendum as the feeling was strong enough to elect a Scottish Nationalist Party to have a majority in the Scottish regional parliament. Plus the majority of people in Scotland DO actively support a referendum. Then again, the majority of British people support a referendum on the EU, which I'm actually not in favour of. However, current polls suggest (and have done for a while) that the majority of Scots wish to MAINTAIN the union, which I'm pretty happy about. Cards on the table, I'd be extremely upset if they as a region completely left the United Kingdom. We've been the nation of the UK for over 300 years now and the rest of the UK relies on Scotland for quite a lot, just like we rely on the South East - people WOULD generally suffer if either region withdrew, sadly.

Like I say, hopefully the point is moot anyway as the majority support is for preserving the union. What'd be terrible would be a domino effect, where the UK became like ten or eleven different historical constituent nations. Each of the regions has separatist parties and has done for a while - in my younger, more idealistic day, I did actually sign the MERCIAN DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE because I liked their whole collectivisation communist vibe haha. So yeah, roll on 2013 I guess, where we can put this issue to bed and move forward.

But, then again, the people of Bristol wanted more say over their lives in the SW so we've elected a mayor. An independent mayor at that! Can you believe it!?!?! I voted for a different independent candidate than the one who won, but George Ferguson seems like maybe the FOR REAL DEAL so eyes peeled for Bristol flexing its muscle on the national scale!

as it stands, i'm voting independence contingent on automatic EU membership and i haven't heard anything that convinced me that wouldn't be the case. maybe there are some big underlying economic issues i'm not aware of but I'll get mighty aware of them before i vote. so what i'm saying is if i had to make the choice right now, it'd be for independence but i intend to learn a lot more about what it would mean.

the referendum isn't for two more years. if i really get into it i might campaign for it and stuff. i'll be in glasgow, anyway, until pretty much that point. so i'll campaign and vote for independence then fack off to china forever.
