i think i remember there being something weird about the polls, i feel like the polls were really mishandled or something so everyone got frustrated with it.
I think I complained to drule that he didn't include the right options and then he changed it which threw away a lot of existing votes and a lot of people didn't bother to revote. something like that.
edit: he added the extra options later after a lot of people had already voted, meaning it wasn't fair, and THEN he made a new poll which was only up for a few hours. that's how it was iirc

glitchworlds p . cool
who cares though + who actually tells peope in real life about this place anyways?

it doesn't have to be irl people you're referring to the site. also that was more of a hypothetical situation should this place ever improve and you wanted to tell someone about it. like if i'm on irc and wanted to tell someone about this cool site with interesting people, i'd hesitate with a name as dumb as saltw. at the very least i'd have to preface it by saying "i know the name is stupid, just ignore it, trust me." i know it's not an issue right now, and hasn't been for this place in many years, but if the people in charge are serious about turning this place around then the name issue is definitely something that would hold it back.

ever see that simpsons episode when you were a kid that was about ned opening a store for left-handed people? and then homer encounters people during the day who could use left-handed products but hesitates to tell them about the store because he hates ned? saltw is ned.

it seems to me—and I think it's perfectly reasonable to disagree—that most people just aren't that uncomfortable about the name as you are and wouldn't feel too weird about mentioning it in a chatroom.

we're moving the site to gronpaulgoldcoins.com tho

My suggestion:

step one: Collect all the (serious) name suggestions. Use common sense, shrug your shoulders/roll your eyes if someone manages to 'sneak' in a joke name. Use names that you can find in an this topic and perhaps a future dedicated topic just for name suggestions or just have people PM you name suggestions for a time period.

step two: Set up a poll, I'd argue make it multiple choice if there are a lot of suggested names. Maybe have it so people have have a "first choice", "second choice" etc. that would effect the weight of their individual votes (Is this possible? I wish it was). Have the poll last at least a week and pin it in general for all to see. Hide results until the end of the poll. Consider locking it.

step three: Set up one last poll that includes the top three results of the first one, keep it up for a day or two, the winning name of this poll gets to be the name of the site.

Why 2 polls? When people see the remaining 3 options its possible they may reconsider there favorite names and vote for something else among the top results.

This is how I'd do it at least. This'll do a decent job of avoiding future discussions about the friggin' name of the site because most people should be at least somewhat ok with the name. (given that it was a name they voted as a second or third choice if that type of poll is manageable)

step 1: Find the one website name suggestion that is the absolute farthest separated from possibly revealing that it represents a website formerly known as "gaming world".

step 2: Use that name.

Takes your post seriously: Still too broad. People will still bring up the name or something and complain. We need to end this discussion by coming up with a concrete name and putting it to as fair a vote as possible.

it would help if anyone even knew what this place was supposed to be. assuming there will never be a mainsite and another misguided attempt at a revival, if it were up to me i'd just change the name to "gw" or create some new backronym that fits those two letters.

That's fine, the post was mostly meant to be taken seriously. I am just saying it from the standpoint that everybody has their own opinions regardless of where the consensus lies. The question is what do we really want the new name to prioritize the most? I do not think picking the name based on what gets the fewest number of people complaining about it will actually translate to us ending up with the name that is actually best suited for the website/community as a whole.

For one thing, picking the name least associated with what the website used to be called is invariably going to have people complain about it not being at all related to what the website used to be, and thus they will start suggesting various ways to combine words that start with the letter 'g' with words that start with the letter 'w'.

The way I see it, anybody that suggests something like that is invariably unaware of how important it is for us to not be tied back to the website we used to be. Any name that even comes close to doing that, I am personally going to complain about invariably and vehemently.

Thus if the goal really is to use a name that absolutely nobody will complain about, then logic dictates that we have already failed before we have even begun to try.
