Yeah, I tend to be very picky about what I regard as a nerd. Nerds are specialists in knowing a lot about a particular subject, or have a strong passion towards general or specialized knowledge acquisition  often to the point of being obsessive over it. (the way earlchip puts it is a prime example of how I would distinguish someone as a nerd, and I would always use such a term exclusivley in an endearing manner)

The type of folks that are equally obsessive, but over taking matters that are definitively trivial far too seriously and require little to no actual talent/knowledge to actually be a specialist in, I tend to refer to as 'dorks', and they are the type who are most often referred to as nerds in mainstream discussion. (I would put any of the folks warped described in this category over 99% of the time. (both of the complete douchebag, and non-or-at-least-less-than-douchebag variety)

Geeks on the other hand, they obsess over the process itself regardless of the subject matter in question. For them, it does not matter what they know, only about how they know it. It is the type of person who enters into pretty much any type of subject with a programmer's mindset, and while not all geeks are programmers, almost every single programmer out there is in fact a geek. He is exactly the type of person who would be really anal about providing a objective distinction between the definitions of various terms that are usually either clumped together, or used interchangeably to describe a large group of people far to generally. (You know, like exactly what I am doing right now)

Don't get me wrong though, the subset involving interest in gaming can be applied in all three cases. The actual distinction between gaming-nerd and gaming-dork is definitely a very subtle one, but a call most decent folks can make on gut instinct.

According to a statement issued by Koch, "Deep Silver, Koch Media’s international publishing powerhouse, will lead all further development and marketing on the Saints Row and Metro franchises." The statement added that "Koch Media and Deep Silver will roll out future plans for each franchise in the coming months."

Welp, that's it folks, Saints Row is now being developed by Deep "mutilated bikini torso sculpture" Silver.  Video games are dead.  RIP video games - Jan 23 2013.

videogames are basically made for 10-25 year old guys. also 10-25 year old guys happen to be really fuckin' gross a lot of the time and media both conditions and responds to it. it is a gross feedback loop of adolescent boner-machines and raw material for the creation of boners

IDK about you but I did not get a boner for the disembodied torso. And I'm a dude aged 10-25.

I'm sure there were those that did. Though I really honestly can't see that group being the majority.

Also, Koch owns Deep Silver but its possible that Saints Row 4 will not be tainted assuming they let Volition just do their thing. THERE IS A BEACON OF HOPE.

Yeah, I was uncertain about that. I guess the same dev team is still developing SR4? But of course as the pubs, deep silver will have the power to influence the game/future series however they want, and will be in charge of all the awful marketing shit that they're apparently particularly clueless about. I think Saint's Row is a successful enough franchise that the devs will mostly be left on their own, but I think it's safe to assume there will be influence from the new pubs. hopin for a bust of shaundi with "create your own gore" feature

thq: appeals to the 10-25 market by getting popular Adult Swim guys to direct a 12 minute long commercial using an exaggerated japanese gameshow as a basis youtube.com/watch?v=U5O9x7aL7QE

deep silver: appeals to 10-25 market with sexy mutilated zombie bust. what fucken skill

the way they say that deep silver are "leading all further development and marketing" does not leave me with much hope that they're going to be left to their own devices

fuck, i don't even want them in charge of marketing since that's what they're the worst at

Just a few "Isolated Incidents" - Gender & Gaming
A catalog of many of the controversies on gender in gaming that got us talking in 2012.

in timeline form with major? articles, links to them and quotes from them. lotta overflowing bosoms and game devs saying "why are you talking about these overflowing bosoms we have taken months to perfect", but other stuff too

sometimes i wonder if there's any watercooler debates or heated email chains among programmer dudes about how much they should make the boobs bounce on characters. like theres probably some guy who's like still down with having them bounce but doesn't want to jeoprodize his artistic vision with exaggerated boob-physics but then there's like some guy who's just a total cynical bro and is like "people love swingin' titties, i love swingin' titties, lets make those tits swing as much as we can"

then there's like this awful upwardly mobile second-wave feminist artistic director consulting hack who justifies the sexual objectification as 'empowering' and the boob-bouncing debate settles on a middle ground that's exaggerated but not absurd and the character is strong but attached to a male counterpart with a large phallic gun or sword and we're back to where we started

I'm pretty sure there's one or maybe even two decent people in every studio who want to tone down the sexism and talk about it on the internal mailing list. That's before they completely have their spirits broken by the barrage of consternation from literally every other developer in which the words "freedom of speech" are used interchangeably with "boob physics engine".

I've heard of a lot of artists who will have corporate people come back and tell them "nope, gotta make the outfits skimpier and the tits bigger ! ! !" and basically if they say no they're now unemployed so yeah this happens plenty and it's incredibly depressing.
