Yeah, the only meaningful difference between what you'd like to do and that site is that your individual game pages will look like their own things with their own top banners. That might be enough.

How's the competition hosting site going?

That's what I'm hoping.

The competition site is on hold sadly. It's mostly done, but was never really launched. I'm thinking of spending some time on it after this project.

Also thanks for everyone's input. It's kinda hard continuously working on something I'm not sure will work but getting feedback gives me confidence to keep going  :)

as far as dealing with people spamming to keep a certain entry on your site upvoted and popular, you can deter that with a bayesian filter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_spam_filtering

spam shouldn't be on the top of your list really i just wanted to plug that in because we started using that at work and it's been really effective.

I've recently seen this jquery plugin called ascensor (http://kirkas.ch/ascensor/#/Implementation) that applies this neat elevator design to a webpage.  I think this would be a neat implementation for what your trying to do, where basically each developer gets their own "floor" that they can customize and use to market their game.  of course this opens up other issues as it may be tricky to scale this kind of solution when you start getting hundreds of developers that want to use your site.

you could also design your site to be kind of like tumblr where the main page is just a feed of whatever is getting reblogged the most with the ability to search things.  you could call it indr.  that name is tight.

i was looking at doing this a couple years ago but my friend pointed out indievania too, although it does put its branding all over all the pages.

i'm not 'selling' anything yet but i would use all of the sites like this i can find providing they don't (somehow) mess with my ability to put GPL on my games but still ask people to pay for them. (oh no i will be vulnerable to THFEIF!! someone please tell me about this.)

also i wouldn't care about 'crap' flooding. game hosting / pages and game-finding/rec are two different services. have page. has game. people find page from idk twitter or their friends or whatever. solves problem of me having to make / organise to host website. great. good. the amount of time i listen to music on bandcamp that i got to from the front page of bandcamp is %0 of the time.

summary: yes, great, good. exciting, good luck. p.s. paypal integrations are annoying, probs you already know this. how bandcamp does the % revenue is it makes every 90th or so transaction to bandcamp. maybe someone already posted that.

The best suggestion I've read so far is linking it to fb. it can be optional though since some people just are pure anti-social-networking. Remember you'll also want developers to see your site trustable and popular enough for them to choose your site to upload their games so you'd have to do some pr and advertising to get your site known. Reaching out to some developers for help on launch day would be great, maybe even try convincing  the Barkley game.

Hi,

Little status update. I planned to have a prototype out by last Sunday but I didn't make it! I still have a handful of things left to do before I can release, and now that I am back to going to my job progress is a lot slower. Maybe this weekend. I'm going through PayPal right now trying to get approved to do the transactions. I need to reach out to people who already have games that would like to participate. Ideally I'd like to help them design pretty game pages so people can go " wow what cool site are they using to sell their game~~ ". If anyone knows anyone (or yourself) with games you'd like to put up tell me! I'm going to post on some other gaming forums when I get a little closer to finish.

I am aware of this but I'm curious why they did it. Does it benefit anyway versus just taking a cut on every transaction. It looks like PayPal's api easily supports something like that.

there is a base charge on top of transactions so small transactions return less money than bigger ones, so it's more economical to do bigger amounts of money at a time.

Yeah that would be awesome. My plan is to find some people with games and help them make nice pages, then I can advertise them on the homepage to give people an idea of what the site does.

Leafo I see issue right now. Is the ability to browse without an account. think about the non-gamemakers how are they gone view this stuff without an account and buy the product. maybe this was an over sight. That's cool if they need account to buy but just to look around at different games.

I'm waiting for some people to make games before I make a portal for browsing games. I want to avoid showcasing junk or test games.

I think it'd be nice if you could click on those screens on the homepage to make em bigger. When I'm looking at some kind of web app, I always want to see what the UI looks like. I have a decent idea from those screens, but the first thing I did on that page was try to click them because I wanted to see what the interface looked like.

But anyways, it looks really good and really professional. I registered an account and looked at everything, it looks really good. Great job. Are you marketing this at all right now? Just passing it around between people you know?
