It stars Rose Byrne, Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh and a few others. Don't know about you, but I've never heard of any of them. I prefer that though. Sometimes it can be a little distracting having a big name star in a movie.

Quote from: 'Wikipedia's plot summary (spoilers?)
Fifty years into the future' date=' the sun is failing, causing mankind to begin dying out. A spacecraft with a crew of eight men and women is launched as a last hope, carrying a bomb the size of Kansas in order to re-ignite part of the sun. Seven years prior, a similar ship had been launched for the same mission, but contact was lost with the ship. When the crew of eight move toward the sun and out of radio contact with Earth, they experience accidents and discover the distress beacon of the ship that had been missing for seven years. [spoiler']At the end of their journey, the crew encounters the source of all life in the universe.[/spoiler]

To be honest, I don't think the plot sounds too incredible. But, Trainspotting and 28 Days Later were both awesome movies, so I'm basically really looking forward to this only because of who the director is. Though, I do like sci-fi movies, so I might have been interested regardless.

More information:
The Official Site.
The trailer.
IMDb Page.
The official release date is March 16th.

Does the music in the trailer sound familiar? It's sort of interesting that a film by Danny Boyle, who directed one of the most famous drug movies (Trainspotting), used the theme from another one of the most famous drug movies (Requiem) for its trailer. I don't think directors usually have much control over the trailers, but it's still kind of a neat coincidence.

Cillian Murphy is the MAIN CHARACTER in 28 days later so I don't see how you haven't heard of him. He's also in "Red Eye," "Batman Begins" and "Girl with a Pearl Earring." so I don't think he can be considered that unknown. Michelle Yeoh is also one of the main characters in Crouching TIger, Hidden Dragon and although I couldn't place her in anything else I would consider her a pretty big star just for that role. I don't have a clue who Rose Byrne is though so you made your point there.

I haven't checked the trailer out yet but I just wanted to point out all these guys are pretty big stars, not on the level of say BRUCE WILLIS but I think in the movie industry their names are out there.

I didn't recognize any of the names, or look any of them up on IMDB, or recognize anyone in the trailer. :(

I should have known Cillian Murphy, but after looking the other two up on IMDB I don't blame myself for not knowing who they are.

Cillian Murphy is one of the best actors in Hollywood.  Everything he's in is pretty awesome.  He's great at playing a villain, like in Red Eye or Batman Begins.  He's definitely my favorite actor out there.

However, the plot of this movie sounds so stupid that I have to see this movie.

It's the Requiem for a Dream theme, by Clint Mansell.

I liked trainspotting and 28 days later, but something about re-igniting the sun. Man that sounds really shitty. Sounds a bit like the core. Which sucked.
I'm probably going to see it anyway.

Man, The Core was the most awesome, yet misunderstood movie ever.  What I loved about that movie was that it was so stupid, yet so much fun to watch.  It wasn't a serious movie at all, and it seemed like the actors knew how dumb the movie was.

Sunshine looks too serious.  I think it's going to be great as a CGI fest, but awful in the way of plot.  I think it'll be entertaining at least.

Am I the only one who is really excited about this film? 28 Days Later and Trainspotting were pretty darn awesome and it's written by Alex Garland who has worked with the director (Boyle) on quite a few films. (Garland has also made one of the many versions of the Halo script, not that that really counts).

Looking at the trailer it's tastefully done and a lot of the shots are stunningly beautiful combined with some fairly nice concepts. I can see how this can be a film about a few people on a spaceshop all alone in space, nearing the sun with all the radiation that comes with it and not to mention that looking at the shots some of them seem like visions/hallucinations/nightmares rather than reality.

I have high hopes for this one.

(Also the music may have been one of the main themes in Requiem for a Dream, but I think a lot more people remember it from the Two Towers trailers)

Sorry, I just have to revive this dead post, because I was about to make a post on it... I watched the movie two weeks ago and had to say something about it.

This movie is extremely interesting and extremely good!

You see in a lot of movies its always about the CGI and explosions, the storyline is simple, characters are there to drive the plot. In Sunshine, the opposite happens, the story drives the characters, its not really what you think the movie is about, it revolves around characters dealing with their sanity, the characters are very interesting too. I like the fact that its not a n ONE NATION only crew, it was an international crew, and there's no silly love story that gets into it.

Some of the most beautiful scenes with CGI too I might add, the ending is absolutely amazing to the eye.

I was really excited about seeing this but somehow I managed to totally miss it in the cinema. Unless I can get ahold of a screener or something I am going to have to wait for it to come out on DVD which I am not too happy about :( ... What a bummer.

It doesn't even have a set release date for USA yet. Wikipedia just says "in the fall or winter of 2007." :(

I saw this a couple of weeks ago too and I really liked it. It had the Sense of Wonder that SF is all about. And for once space was really fricking big, and scary, and awesome. I just wanted to be with them in space because it all just felt so right.

This movie was great, IMO, up until we had the whole bit, and from then on, it just got a bit ridiculous. I mean, it would've been great if

So yeah. It was pretty good, yeah, but that bit just... ruined it for me. The special effects were beautiful though. :3 As an aside, the original post said

...did they?
I can't remember that >_>

BTW, IMDB says 14th of September for USA release date, so there you go.

It is nothing like The Core, and is very good. I saw it with my dad a while back.
