So I go to the cinema quite a bit - I'd say about once per week because every Thursday afternoon there's no classes at my university, even if it's to see something shitty (but not something embarrassing like Bratz or something). I really like going to the cinema because I like watching the movie with an audience and hearing the reactions and such. The downside is that sometimes there's a rowdy group that just annoy the crap out of you.

But that doesn't usually stop me from going to the cinema to see movies (recent examples) like The Departed, The Illusionist, 300, Zodiac and Hot Fuzz. I even went to see the 'smaller' films like Babel and Little Miss Sunshine in the theatre. I own alot of DVD's and I find that when I watch them home, I don't get the same effect. And there's lots of movies I wish I could have seen in the cinema - including old ones.

But I know people who prefer the comfort of their own homes to watch movies. Surround sound systems, lounging on their couch with a bowl of popcorn, etc. I'm all for that too but I often feel like it'll be much better in the theatre.

So where do you prefer watch your movies?

I tend to see about one film/week in the cinema too. Of course I tend to go on an "all-out day" watching two-three films in one day, walking out with a headache and a smile on my face. I watch a variety of films but I usually go for the one with flashy effects that work best in the cinema, even a not-so-good action film can become decent in the cinema. Of course I've also had my moments of weakness and watched things like Road to Guantanamo, Vera Drake and The Motorcycle Diaries in the cinema.

Some films I would have loved to watch in the cinema:
- Star Wars (for the first time, I have seen the special edition, but damn the feeling to have seen it in 1977 in the cinema...)

- The Nightmare Before Christmas
- The Godfather
- Fight Club
- Requiem for a Dream
- Once Upon a Time in Mexico
- Desperado
- Braveheart
- Blade Runner

Alright so that was just a few... There's more. It's usually either films that came out before I started going to the cinema (or in some cases before I was born) or films that completely went passed my radar when they came out because I didn't think too highly of them. But then rediscovered on DVD and wished that I hadn't passed up on them.

Ah, jeez. Fight Club and Requiem for a Dream, definitely.

I remember the first time I saw Fight Club, I was thinking how grand this would be if I were watching this in the theatre with 100 more people who would like it just as much.

Just for the hell of it, a couple of movies I am really glad I saw in the cinema recently:

- The Bourne Ultimatum
- Superbad

Fight Club, because like one guy saw it when it actually came out in theaters I think. It would've been cool to be guy + 1

I wish I had been around to see the Dollars trilogy in a theater. I had a pretty pimp surround-sound system that provided all the kickass audio I would ever need, but when it comes to TVs I've always had shite (20 inches in the biggest I've gone). Someday when I am rich I will have a huge-ass 62" plasma but until then I use the theater to enjoy the mega blockbusters.

Recently I saw the 5th Harry Potter film and Transformers in theaters, and it was the shit. Also, King Kong is not even half as badass when it's not on a hueg screen with 7.1 surround. I've never understood shelling out $9 (seriously) to see a comedy in theaters. You're going for the jokes, not special effects or whatever. Like, I saw Wedding Crashers in theaters, and it was hilarious, but it's equally hilarious at home. No one needs an enormous plasma screen or surround sound to enjoy straight-up comedy movies like that (and as an added bonus, a lot of comedies include deleted scenes and the like in DVD releases, meaning you really get more bang for your buck if you just wait.)

The sheer epicness of those movies is enough to make me want to watch them anywhere.

I wish I could see Serenity in the theater again.

As for a preference...we have a home theater in our basement so I can sort of get both at the same time :/  It's probably the best option because you have a big screen and big sound, but also you can sprawl out on a couch and make whatever noise you want.

Also you can't watch Clarissa Explains it All in a real theater!

I think for the "human experience" or whatever. Like I remember seeing "American Wedding" (which is basically a piece of shit comedy) in the cinema and found it 3 times as funny there because everyone else was enjoying it. I don't think I would've liked it at all if I saw it on cable first.

Also what about drama? Alot of those don't have special effects either and I like seeing them on the big screen. I loved Babel and Brokeback Mountain (lol =( ) on the big screen.

I did that with my friend went we both went to see a movie with our other two friends that we really didn't want to see. (The Breakup) We basically playing Animal Crossing together in the back corner of the theater during the whole movie. It was epic.

Anyway, there are a lot of recent movies that I missed that I wish I'd seen. But of like yeah, I'd've liked to see Star Trek 7 and 8 in theaters, I'm sure that was epic. Labyrinth would've been pretty cool as well.

I like both; watching movies on my couch is comfy but the theater is fun, too. I'm especially happy I saw Disturbia in the theater because when Shia LeBouff stabbed Andy or whoever the killer was with the shears and he fell back and died, some guy in the back of the theater yelled 'You dead, bitch!' Classic.
