You've gone too far.

The first cliff you climb, just to teh right of the village, there's a cave entrance there. Jump into it, put a weight on the wee pedestal there (kill monsters and smash crates if you don't have one) and a new path will open in the floor, go down and Welcome to La Mulana.

You might also want to get the shellhorn (treasure chest in the room just before the waterfall, kill all the monsters for it), and the Game Master ROM in the tent at the left part of the village so you can save your game by equipping it with F3 and talking to the village elder.

Dunno how much of this you figured out but it's what you need to get started!

God, I feel like this game will never end.  I've pretty much discovered every dungeon, activated all the warp points, but I've only beat the third boss (the raptor guy on the trolley ride) and I'm in the "moon temple" dungeon or whatever it's called but I can't progress until I defeat Anubis (which requires a special item) so now I have to return to the lava place because I just got the ice cape.  SO MUCH BACK AND FORTH URGH!!

This game is so hard, long, and frustrating... but it's just ADDICTING.  I thought I was near finished with it but according to the Japanese strategy guide I'm not even half done.

Speaking of Waterfall, Bisse...

Have you discovered the secret hut?  After you get the helmet and the waterscale or whatever it's called, past the waterfall you can climb up the ladder and attack a section of the wall to reveal a secret hut... but I can't get on the ledge inside.  You can't climb OFF the ladder, if the bird hits you you just fall, and you can't jump off screen and change direction mid-jump.  I'm thinking that maybe I need the double jump boots or I have to use the claws to grab onto the wall and then jump INTO the monster so the knockback lands me on the ledge...

ARGH SO FRUSTRATING

I'm trying to figure out how to "anger the snakes" in the 3rd dungeon as one of the stone tablets say you should do to open something. I'm talking about the I want to figure it out myself though - i've figured everything out myself so far, except for how to save the game :p, and i'm going to beat this fucking game without a fucking walkthrough to make up for all the Zelda games I had to use a walkthrough on when the answer was insanely easy/obvious,

I think "anger the snakes" is a reference to a puzzle in the lava dungeon

Anyways, I've bee puzzled about that snake thing too.  I think that's actually Udagi or whatever that god is that's referenced in a stone tablet.  It says "pray underneath Unapi or whatever.  Do nothing, just meditate."  I managed to get on the ladder under him... but nothing.

Also, you need the in order to enter the cavity where the aforementioned hut is located.

By the way, have you guys found the grail and figured out how to use it yet? This item allows to teleport to previously visited areas (only those in which you've examined the tombstone that has a crown-like shape on top of it). It can be found very early in the game, but only through a secret passage.

Well, you pretty much confirmed my suspicions about the feather... AND YES WE'VE FOUND THE GRAIL THANK YOU!  Actually, I thought you get it by killing the four enemies in that one screen... you don't actually HAVE to go through the secret passage but I could be wrong.

Also, is there a warp point to the moon temple?  I read the pillar... but nothing.

Anyways, my only complaint right now is that some of the traps are ridiculously unfair and by unfair I mean horribly cheap.  Sometimes they block you off or something or they activate a set of unavoidable spike pits.  In most areas, you can tell what will activate a trap (like the Ankh just sitting in a alcove in that mirror world place) but for the most part, falling down a 3 foot pit but not being able to jump out because I can't access the screen above me is just ridiculous.

But still, I must pay homage to this game in some way!  And this game destroys Maze of Galious.  I can see the connections what with the crumbling skeletons, bats, and the almost identical theme music, but Galious has nothing on this.

To teleport to the rear-side fields, you need to insert two specific carts in the MSX2:

As for the grail, it's possible there is an alternative to it, but the only way I found to reach the treasure chest was to . There was a block preventing me from accessing it from the right, and there was no ladder until I managed to get in there via the aforementioned method, so I couldn't reach it otherwise. But you may be right about killing the enemies in that screen, since I don't remember whether I tried that or not.

Never mind, you do have to access the screen via the secret path to get the grail (the skeleton right below the path even says "ALL THE ROOMS ARE MYSTERIOUSLY CONNECTED LOLZ!").  Killing the four monsters (two bats, a skeleton, and that jumping elephant thing) only creates the 3 blocks that are used to reach switch that unveils the first boss room.

Wow... how is anyone supposed to figure that out?  I don't remember seeing a clue about that at all.

But I did discover by accident an awesome homage to some old dating sim by inserting two specific carts.  Just when I thought this game couldn't get any weirder and it turns around and smacks me in the face for doubting it.

Don't worry about the water.  You get an item later that makes you immune to it.

And I just found the birth seal rather accidentally while trying to reach the hidden hut and man... that thing unlocks so many fucking secrets you miss like the life gem in the water level and the cross in the guardian's gate.

Which brings me to another thing I love about this game: finding new shit.  You pass by so many things unknowingly until you get the item needed and I feel like a school girl returning to the levels to discover all the crap I missed.

Whoah, just had an awesome play session where I picked up the chain whip, throwing knives (yeah, I never discovered the collapseable floor until AFTER I beat the second area), and went to the ice world to pick up the gauntlets... WHICH MAKE COMBAT 30X EASIER.  You pretty much have RAPID FIRE with the whip and the knife is instantaneous death to anything that gets in your way.

Anyway, I pretty much need the feather to get anywhere further in the ice world.  I know there's something in the lava place... everyone talks about power and there's these suspicious pipes in one of the lower areas that draws my attention.  There's also this really long alcove in the area with the long drop that leads NOWHERE which is also suspicious.  One of the stones says "right, right, left, left" which is even more suspicious but I can't figure it out and then there's that ghost who says "everything isn't as it should be.  Return here by a different path" which is leading me to believe that I have to go through MIRROR LAND to get any further.

I can't seem to find the boss in the water world... I know that boat is involved and I got the water in the boat area but I can't seem to ride it anywhere.  I need the item that makes me invulnerable to anubis to get any further in the moon pyramid.  I'm probably going to go explore that dark world and that strange world that you find inside the ice cave place.  I also want to try out that weird maze world where going up certain latters warps you back and there's one area that gives you a timer or else you die so I might find some items there.

Man I just came back from being on a bloody roll! I was just discovering shit and getting new stuff all over the place. Getting those two seals, the helmet and the ScaleSphere just opened up so much more areas. I was having a field day.

I'm still trying to figure out what i've missed in the third area though. There HAS to be something somewhere that i've missed, a stonetablet or something. I can't seem to make progress in any of the other areas either anymore. I'm going to have to go through areas 3-6 again and write  down all the stone tablet info I didn't write down before. I know there was something about running fast I read somewhere which would be solvable now that I have - I have no clue where I read it or what it was too.

And also, it might be implying towards the secret path that is under it, but I really don't think it is so what the hell is up with that riddle, ?!?!? I'M FUCKING JUMPING RIGHT INTO IT OK WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME

Fuck I read this too and I'm completely stumped >

And what's area 6?  I haven't found the tablet for it yet and I don't mind if you spoil it.

Anyways, about leaping into the sun... you'll kick yourself if you read this.  Seriously, it's not even a puzzle like you might think.

You CAN leap into the sun, but you have to destroy it first. It leads inside the reversed pyramid in the Temple of Moonlight. If memory serves, you need the bombs to open this up.

Bisse: when I first played through that dungeon, I was stuck for hours until I noticed that there is a small . I don't remember what it does exactly, though (I think it makes the ).

Marcus: you should be able to get the feather at this point, which is guarded by . All you need to defeat him is the Serpent Staff. It is found in the The Book of the Dead, which grants protection against Anubis, is also found in this stage.

Regarding the long alcove in the Inferno Cavern, the tablet above shows what must be done. But there's a pedestal you must activate first to actually be able to . You will obviously need the Grapple Claw.

EDIT: oops, I think you were talking about the alcove in the lava pool. What I'm referring to is the precipice where there are flames coming out from the walls.

As for the boat in the Spring in the Sky area, have you tried hitting the wheel thingy in the bassin of the screen that precedes this one?

By the way, once/if you have the flares, you should go to the area east of the Temple of the Sun where the lights black out. Don't be like me and expect this place to eventually get illuminated through the activation of a pedestal or the death of a boss.

Well, I hit the wheel in the basin but all it did was raise the water.  The boat doesn't actually go anywhere.

EDIT: Ha!  The reason nothing happened was because I didn't have an Ankh.  I actually used the Ankh from the water world to defeat the pyramid raptor boss.  Well, now I can fight the water world boss or whatever.

And I know what red switch you're talking about (hard to find actually) although I think it just cut the bottom of the pyramid off... I'll look again harder.

Fuck, Bahamut pissed me off.  I beat him on my 3rd try but the fact that the water poisons you and it takes 10 minutes and 5 screens of some of the most frustrating platforms in the game to reach him...

FUCK I HATE THE BATS!!

And the lava cave place has me completely stumped.  ARGH EVERYTHING HERE IS NOT EVERYTHING ARGH!

I really don't like how this game has fuck-you puzzles that permanently lock you out of items and areas if you fail them on the first try, or even if you just press a switch the god damn game doesn't want you to press.

But at least it's really easy to modify the graphic files, so that's cool!!

it's going to be fun redoing all of the item icons (provided i don't get bored of this by tomorrow (i will))

ugh the game lost it's appeal!

IT MUST HAVE BAD GRAPHIX SORRY!

Anyways, I do agree that some of the traps are horrendously lame.  I don't think there's a puzzle that permanently fucks you, but there are some where you have to warp out of or else you're stuck.  Most of the traps have context clues (like skeletons laying next to them or direct paths that lead to an area that's too obvious) but some of the platform elements that include bats piss me off because of the stupid platformer staple of KNOCKBACK when you're hit.
