I thought of something, like what if you played against a real hard computer on a different site and a gw member on littlegolem at the same time. Say you started the game against the gw member and if they were white and went first, so you went second. So whatever moves they make, you could mimmick them on the really good computer on a seperate site, whatever their response would be would also be yours against the human.

I don't understand. The human or computer could make different moves...? Thus making this pointless?

What he means is that when the person you're playing against makes his move, you make that move against the computer game. Then you play the computer's move against him. You could also cheat by setting up the position with a chess program and then analyzing it. Either way it's pretty lame.

The computer and the human you are playing against are free to make moves. Now you see the human, when he makes his move, you use that move on the computer, the computer's response is yours on to the human. Basically you are copying the humans moves as your own so when the computer responds to it, you will know how to yourself. Example:

Human Match
Your opponent makes first move.
Computer Match
You make the first move your human opponent did, thus emulating what the he did onto the computer. The computer soon responds with a move of his own.
Human Match
Take the move the computer made and make it onto your human opponent. He responds to it. Rinse and repeat.

Seems like Guana beat me to it, but yeah that is how it all works. I would never do it, though. I have a little more honor than that.

Anyone who does that though is pretty gay. I mean it seems like so much pointless effort just to feel like you are succeeding at a friendly game between some internet buds. Not to mention, computers don't make mistakes for the most part. It would be pretty obvious if someone was doing this because they would be impenetrable. (Like Dada >:[)

Anyway it seems like such a completely pointless waste of time/effort for someone to do this. Why would they? Status? Achievement? Why join a competition purely for the purpose of having a computer top all the other players?

I am pretty sure most of the people I have played so far are not using computers as they make a lot of human mistakes, I myself have a pretty even win/lose ratio and I often give away pieces just from not paying attention really. The only person I am unsure of is Dada but for all I know he is just a REALLY GOOD CHESS PLAYER. I have however never seen him make a mistake and I don't think he has lost a game so far.

I've made plenty of mistakes so far but fortunately they were all against players who either couldn't take advantage of it or didn't even notice. Like here: http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=775188&nmove=25. If White does 13. Rxf5, I'll have to take it back with my queen. I win the exchange, but then White uses 15. Ng5! which allows him to take my rook back immediately. The queen is also suddenly in a lot of trouble. Needless to say, my position is pretty much ruined after that. Thankfully, he didn't see it and used 13. g6 instead.

Anyway, it's easy to make mistakes sometimes, but you reduce the chance of that happening by a LOT if you check out all attackers (pieces that could take another piece, regardless of circumstances or repercussions), defenders (pieces that defend another piece) and undefended pieces (pieces that, if taken, could not (immediately) be taken back) before making a move. Some chess software has a training mode for this and I suggest you try it sometime since not being able to immediately see these three types of pieces is, in my opinion, the biggest cause of mistakes.

I was not actually accusing you of cheating, I think we all know each other enough to play trustworthy games regardless of whether other people on the net like to use computers to enlarge their e-chess-penis or whatever.

Bump. It's been a while, but I've been playing matches. I still need to update the topic! I'll do so tonight.

I beat Vesper twice:

http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=789378 (with White)

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Bd6? 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d4 Nxe4 5. dxe5 Bc5 6. Qd5 Nxf2?? 7. Qxf7# 1-0. Vesper didn't notice a mate threat early on.

http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=789376 (with Black)

1. e4 g5 2. Nf3 g4 3. Nh4 d5 4. Bd3 dxe4 5. Bxe4 Nf6 6. Bd3 Nc6 7. c4?? Qxd3 8. Qe2? Qxe2 9. Kxe2 Nd4 10. Kf1?? Nc2 0-1 white resigns. The problem here was an oddball opening (I promised Vesper I'd play it). Without a book, it's easy to make mistakes, and Vesper made quite a few, such as giving away his bishop, exchanging queens when it meant he'd lose the right to castle, and finally allowing me to attack his rook with my knight (which was the point where he resigned). Check whether your move leaves your pieces exposed before you make it.

EDIT: my second game against _Guana is by far the most interesting so far, in my opinion. We're still pretty much equal (though I have more active pieces, and Black is in a slightly cramped position). http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=788528&nmove=41 (41th ply at this time of writing)

I updated the topic and added a bunch of new results.

EDIT: I have not yet received any match results from Acid, Man-O-War, Polygon and Nessiah_Equinox. Please post your results here ASAP, because if I don't get them soon, I'll be forced to drop you from the tournament. It's taken pretty long already!

You were Polygon, right? I can't keep up with all those silly name changes. I'll drop you from the listing.

I only have one match going on, so it would be cool if people would invite me to some matches

My nickname is "Marcin" (or at least that is my display name)

This is pissing me off!

Is it your login name or your display name that people need to challenge me? I did not receive either of your invitations, Dada. My login name is "ashorteternity," so perhaps that will work...

I guess you need the login name! I just resent both invites.

Is this tournament dead? This topic hasn't been active for a month. I beat ASE a while ago (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=786171) though.
