A little note about why I started this topic and what I plan to do for the future. It's a pretty good read too.

                                                                       Selena Quintanilla

                                                              April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995 (23)

Anyways I had an urge to listen to some Selena again. I'm almost certain that there would be very few objections to me calling Selena one of the "Greats''. She had a HUGE influence, and popularized Tejano music (A style of conjunto music originating in southern Texas and combining influences from country music, rhythm and blues, and popular Latin styles).

And man... This girl is so talented in so many ways! I was always the biggest fan of Selena. When ever I hear any of her songs I get a rush of emotions man. The funny thing, I don't know any other singer that can make me feel this way either... Not as much as her at least. Not only can she sing but she can dance, is gorgeous (I always love hispanic girls), and her personality is infinite times better then a lot of modern day singers! She also did well in keeping her physique and body in shape!

If you look at all her pictures/videos/interviews... You'll see that she is probablly one of the nicest and out-going person around. Seriously, I'm not just saying that because I'm a huge fan either. Infact, it was her kindness that played a part in her own death as well... I really hate talking about how she died, it just makes me so angry and sad. I do acknowledge that when it's your time to die, it's your time to die and all though :S.

Information:

I can't really out due the wiki on her so I won't try. It also explains how she died as well.

Selena did most of her songs in her native tongue, spanish. She really wanted to break into the American industry as well. She definately did too, unfortunately she died before making too many songs. There are a lot of English songs she did but it would never be enough imo :(.

The saddest part is that she could have totally owned both the American Billboards and the Mexican (or Latin) billboards. If anything, I just wanted to see how far she would go and what she would have done/be doing now 12 years later (2007).

Here are the Videos!

English Songs:

I Could Fall In Love:

Dreaming Of You:

*The Real Video. Selena doesn't star in it but she was alive when it was made thankfully :D.

*Compiled version with movie clips and then some REAL Selena scenes!

Is It The Beat:

Very low quality version, hard to hear. You should watch the video below (no Selena in it though)

AMV sort of thing, it's really cool. This is one of my FAVOURITE Selena songs. It's the English version of "Enamorada De Ti"

Spanish Songs:

Enamorada De Ti: (Is It The Beat, in english)

YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS Selena is such an awesome dancer too, so hyper :D.

Remember this is really nothing of all the accomplishments of Selena! To hear all her songs, see more pictures, get access to ALL the videos of her concerts and stuff. Maks ure you check out...

By the way just wanted to say that Jennifer Lopez totally sampled/bite Selena with that song

"Waiting for tonight"

It's sampled from Selena's Enamorada de ti (Is it the beat). Jennifer Lopez also played Selena in "Selena Movie" which was like a biography sort of. Selena boosted Lopez career a lot but she never even showed up for the big tribute they did this year for Selena.... What a whore.

Selena of course did her own versions of other people's songs but that was before she and her family wrote their own songs.

She really makes me sad though. I have like a love and hate relationship with her and her songs. I just get sad and like cry like a baby when I hear her songs.

Selena is so deep man.

wrong forum but even then, Selena has always been overrated to me. pretty standard pop stuff! I'm a little blown away you'd put her in a GREATS category for making what amounts to the same sentimental schlock a lot of people put out.

I see, where was I suppose to post this? I never posted in any music section before from what I can remember.

I guess your entitled to your opinion. What artist would you consider one of the "Greats"? Just name a few, I don't want to derail the topic. I was just a little curious.

i remember when selena was popular and even back then i kind of thought she was trashy pop music. i'm not trying to come off like a dick here (seriously!) but i can't really see what makes her different from any other pop act from the time.

I think it had to do more with the spanish culture than anything else.
From what I know, she was probly the biggest Tejano act around.

Shes like a Hispanic Icon apparently, So much to where bad mouthing her (at least where I live) is actually worse than most things you can say.
I could say fuck your mom to one of my mexican friends and they wont even cringe, but If I even joke about Selena, not only will that friend get pissed, but so will any other Tejano/Kicker guy there.

That's exactly it tomohawkjoe.

The whole point of the"Greats" topic is to shed light on some great artists from MANY different cultures and communities. I didn't have to really shed light on Selena since she is pretty well known. But still, that is my objective, which I clearly stated in the spoiler at the top of my initial post.

I will of course pay tributes to American greats too so don't worry. I chose Selena first because I happen to be listening to one of her songs at the time by chance. Plus, I think she is awesome and she was very influential in more ways then one.

Btw, if you guys have suggestions of great artists that you think belongs in "The World's Greats" category just let me know.

I will listen to any artist from any nation (even if I have trouble understanding the language), I will do my best to find out everything about them!

P.S:
I renamed the topic just to clarify things a bit.

Well, I'm not to smart on greats in other cultures. Also, by greats, is it limited to musicians, or someone who had a massive impact on a certain culture?

I posted this in the music topic for the reason of limiting it to just musicians for now. I'm really interested in listening to music from abroad. I heard a lot of great artists that make music from abroad  but I wouldn't call myself an expert.

Which is why I'm giving you guys the opportunity to introduce me to what you guys listen to :D. Languages are great and music and culture can really effect ones enthusiasm to want to learn the language a bit to try and comprehend things better.

Yeah, I kinda realized how stupid my question was since this was in the music section.
As far as other musicians from other cultures, um... I really think the early blues movement had a huge impact on music and cultures, I mean, it started the whole rock/blues scene in the UK. Oh man, Robert something... his last name escapes me (i'm not a big blues guy) but he was apparently the biggest influence on alot of the guitar players in the UK. Dang, this is gonna bug the hell out of me, what was his last name...

EDIT: This is going off a documentary I saw on guitar legends, but apparently this Robert guy had a influence on the entire blues music culture. Like a founding father or sumthing.

man, you think spanish culture is represented by SELENA?

really?

you might as well say RICKY MARTIN or J LO.

while I'm not a big fan of his, Santana would have been way more representative of someone good who is hispanic.

As much as I hate to say this, she is a huge part of the of the spanish culture. She is pretty much loved by alot of the hispanic community. I can't tell you how many times I hear a Selena song being played by someone in the spanish community. Santana isn't really a good representation because alot of the spanish community would rather listen to Selena than Santana anyday. I can't say I agree with this, but then again, my opinion is usually ignored, because I'm viewed as a coconut (brown on the outside, white on the inside). I would wish a million times that Santana was what represented the spanish culture, but it wont happen. Selena is adored by the hispanic community, shes pretty much a legend. Even the newer genereation has fallen in love with her. Why? I have no Idea. I personally find her music boring and bland, but hispanic's opinion doesn't count for the entire culture.
As for Ricky Martin and J-Lo, I highly doubt they even come close to the impact Selena had on the whole spanish community.

Once again you guys aren't really getting the point of this topic.

You should really read the topic title , The World's "Greats". I phrased it like that on purpose to steer away from The World's "Greatest". This topic isn't about the "Greatest" musicians from all the different communities. It's about acknowledging some of the "Greats".

I don't actually think Selena is the greatest representative of the spanish community. Infact, it would be hard to label a single musician or band as the greatest. I was simply pointing out an artist who done some big things in her time. A candidate that many people of the spanish and even the english community would consider "Great" (myself included). Also Danger, that is your personal opinion because really? Both artists are really talented and great! I am in no way trying to put them up against each other, this isn't a competition.

I like Carlos Santana and I think he is really really talented. I would even class him as one of the greats as well. Lou Bega is good, even though I'm not particulary a fan. I wouldn't mind recommending them though even though I personally don't think too much of them.

I hope you guys understand better now.

well then my next question is are you going to label Linkin Park, with their smash records, as one of America's greats? because I can find them in a lot of subcultures in America.

the issue I have isn't the world part, but the GREATS part. Selena just...isn't that great! OVERRATED LMAO but really, she's pretty standard pop who didn't do much for pop except...die :(

...
, But he brings up a good point.
Define great. Because Great is pretty vague. Are we talking about the impact the artist had on music, or just how many records they sold and how popular they are?

Holy shit talk about nitpicking...

I'm starting to regret I even made this topic. Well, to be honest Danger I am not really taking your post too serious about Selena. Why? Because you keep labeling as a "Standard" pop star. When in reality, most of her songs are NOT considered pop except for some of the very few english titles she sang. Your really just judging her from the few titles you heard. Just because you personally don't like her does not mean she wasn't a great artist.

Also, define great? I'm not working from any set defination. Only, a collabrative of talent, persona, accomplishments and so on. First off, Selena really sang in a neiche category that wasn't very popular in it's time which was Tejano music. However, she popularized it and litterly owned it. If you look at some of the award ceremonies held at the time relating to latin music world. Selena won best female artist of the year and over 7 other awards back to back awards. She then made a english album which sold incredibly well and you can basically hear a lot of her titles on the radio until even today.

She had a great personality and was a part of many organizations against crime and contribute lots of her earnings to them as well. She's like the only person I know at that time who like talk to fans with absolutely no security after all her concerts. She toured and performed ust about everywhere in the southern states and mexico no matter how bad or unsafe the place may have been. Seriously, you wouldn't find many artists that reach so much back out to the community. She has a great voice and liked to dance to almost all her songs if possible. If you know anything about singing, it's very hard to keep a note while dancing and jumping up and down.

Her popularity is just attribute to why I would consider her great, it's not the sole reason. Her impact and how she touched so many people is another reason why I think she is great. I don't understand why you are so dead set on proving she is not great. She is, whether you like it or not. I personally don't like many artists that could be considered "Great" but I would still acknowledge all their talent and their accomplishments, stop being so narrow minded man.

Anyways, I'll think of another artist for the next topic. To be honest I really don't know if I should even make another topic.

man...I dont think you and I are using the same definition of great.

I would put Neutral Milk Hotel, a band I don't like with a completely atonal singer, in a greats list because of their IMPACT. when you say the world's greats, I expected like Andres Segoiva, not a personification of the mostly lackluster latino pop genre. people with powerful music that also made an impact while they were alive, not one or the other!

your average pop act is kind of hard to call great ALREADY on the fact that pop is made to be generally as inoffensive and non-challenging as possible. I'm kind of surprised you would put someone like Selena in a GREATS list and expect much agreeing because she can sing while jumping.
