So, I want to make a learned decision for next years presidential election. And I'm not ENTIRELY sure who I would want to see as President! So, how do you guys narrow it down? I've read each candidates Wikipedia page on the issues that matter to me, and browsed through ontheissues.com . I've kinda narrowed it down between a few guys (Colbert), but I'm on the fence.

So how about you guys? How much research do you do? Do you even VOTE? For the guys outside the country (THE COUNTRY = USA), how closely do you follow the elections?

this was totally meant to be in the general forum can a mod move it thanks[s/]  [firefox ][/firefox]

I think maybe Phil Collins or possibly Porcupine Tree are the best candidates. I wouldn't even consider giving my vote to the Beastie Boys, though--not after their most recent comments. Maybe Kelly Clarkson would be a good leader, actually.

Pink would be better due to the serious and political nature of her songs.

ask me because i rule heh.

don't vote for Colbert because as much as you might be disgruntled against the democratic process there are actual good candidates out there. Ron Paul is secretly one of the worse candidates, with the only benefit to him being that he's so bad Congress would never let him pass any of his bills. most of the Republicans are throwaway this year honestly, but it's not like there has been a good one since McCain in 2000, back when he had more ethics and wasn't a prowar nutjob. Guiliani is horrible as shit and might be winning the nomination, and he once threw the homeless into vans and then drove them out of the city and dumped them into slums, then said I CLEANED UP THE CITY. if you are so committed to abortion and that's your single issue vote, fuck you anyways don't vote!

of the Democrats, Obama's the best front runner, despite what shit Doktormartini likes to believe (hey guys can you believe?????????? Obama didn't say he'd rule out another war WHAT A MONSTER YOU KNOW PRESIDENTS THAT TAKE A HARDLINE STANCE AGAINST DEFENSE ALWAYS WIN!!!!), but he's way behind Hillary. Kucinich was the best of the lot and he's pretty much out of it. Hillary is not a good candidate, but it's interesting the tack that people take against her is shit like what Ron Paul did (oh snaaaaaaap) where he said that Hillary was a commie socialist who was possibly a lesbian in college, and in reality she's really conservative in many ways and was in fact part of the College Republicans.

so I mean, between Guiliani and Hillary, I'd rather vote for the one who is riding on her husband's coattails instead of 9/11 and doesn't have the risk of forcibly evicting the illegal immigrants in giant concentration camp style trains.

this pretty much. Hillary is pretty mediocre as a candidate, Obama is the best frontrunner, and Kucinich is probably the best overall candidate. the republicans are pretty shit in general. I don't really agree completely with steel on Giuliani being a shoe-in for the republicans, i think Romney may have a decent chance

Obama screams victory to me. I've watched some interviews he's been in, some of his Youtube videos, and the debates he took place in. His views make a lot of sense and are perfect for a progressive America.

as I remember, Guiliani was in the lead by a considerable margin in donations, but I haven't seen the latest polls.

just checked and it's mostly Thompson and Guiliani. that and Romney is Mormon, so he's out (when your religion involves space underwear and magic hats).

I met Obama last night in a small (around 200) person rally here in GOOD OLD NEW HAMPSHIRE.

What a guy, jesus he really can work a room and the things he says just make you want to stand up and cheer.

I'm going to vote for... nobody! Because I don't live in the US. Still, your president will affect me as well. So please make the right decision by voting for that black guy.

I think the best thing for you to do is to look at their official campaign pages, their voting record (or other political records, and then check out some of their speeches and videos, then decide for yourself who you think the best choice is. IMHO it's not about who is where in the polls or who has the best chance of winning, what really matters is that your choice is right for you. Vote for who you want, not the person most likely to win. There is a wealth of information on the internet, see if you can find links to transcripts, audio or video of their interviews and statements. If you really want to look into the candidates it'll take time and effort, but will be worth it if you find the best candidate for you, even if they don't win.

Wait, I thought that the parties nominated someone, and then you vote for them in some sort of electron college.  So following who's front-runner for the particular parties would be a point of interest at this point in time.

They do, but this is primary election time, so you can vote for whom ever you want to, and even in the general election you can chose to abstain or vote for a 3rd party if the candidates are not to your liking. We can pretty much vote for whom ever we want, unless the courts decide to take a candidate off the ticket.

what's primary election time?  You get to vote who the party has to or should nominate?  Or is it just some sort of official popularity contest?

Yeah, you vote for who the party should nominate. However, the party delegates can vote for whom ever they like at the party national conventions, even though they're supposed to reflect the will of their local party members.

Wow, even if you don't intend to vote for him or any liberal candidate for that matter that's pretty honest and respectable of you to say that. Props to you for being open minded especially when (correct me if I'm wrong) a number of members here give you crap for your supposedly strongly conservative political agenda.

You know what I'm saying  :fogetshrug:. Maybe I have things wrong but if not that's pretty respectable imho.

Truth's gotten more liberal from our corruption :)

and yes, at the moment, these are the primary election. since the president is a lame duck (meaning he can't run again) both parties are searching for a candidate to throw on the field that will win. the republicans are in the unenviable position of having to justify a war their entire party is still for, which is why it looks like the democrats might take it next year.

of course that's a gross oversimplification but you get the drift.
