...or maybe the water supply in India is disgusting and not safe for consumption. Genetic defects aren't extremely rare in poor countries, a lot of times the mother probably isn't getting the proper nutrition during pregnancy, either.

yeah it's not the most first world of countries to begin with, and then coupled with a huge birth rate, you end up with genetic defects.
