So I completed the game with all 120 stars, and I must say I am speechless.
This game freaking delivers. Tons of variety with gameplay, abilities, and environments, as opposed to the tropical theme being beaten to death in Sunshine. The game's difficulty curve also stays at where it should be. The game starts mind-numblingly simple with basic tutorial missions and small bosses, then it picks up with more elaborate stages and missions, all leading up to the hair-ripping insanity of the purple coin missions around the end. My only gripe is that the stages seemed a tad linear as opposed to the large worlds you could openly explore in both 64 and Sunshine. Not a big deal, really.
Now then, for the juicy bits:
Hidden content (Click to reveal)I am SO happy Nintendo listened to the x-amount of fans who wanted Luigi playable. I really feel like Luigi is a suitable reward for all the effort put into the game [along with the nifty cutscene involving Princess Rosalina and the Luma Mario kept safe in his cap]. Considering Luigi starts off on the Gate where Mario started, a whole new "alternate file" is given to you from the profile screen. Luigi is given the same task Mario was, to find all the Grand Stars and Power Stars, and rescue the princess. Luigi, in terms of control, is a lot tougher. Typical to Luigi tradition, he jumps really, REALLY high and has poor traction. The way Luigi walks on land, is the same way Mario would walk on ice, so I'm pretty much dreading the Freezeflame Galaxy.
