Basically, to explain a little. I'm not into Revolutionary Road, I don't think it's got what it takes to win Best Picture/Director, it just doesn't seem strong enough. Same with DiCaprio with Best Actor, there are far more stronger performances around. I'm getting the feeling soon The Wrestler will start to rise up for the big stakes, the trailer is now out and it does look fantastic. It's uncontroversial, very American and is getting some pretty sweet response already. Waltz with Bashir is in three different categories because it could go generally anywhere. People (like Mark Kermode) are insisting that it goes in the Best Picture category, breaking down this whole animation/film situation. It could easily go in foreign film too. I get the feeling Milk and Benjamin Button will find their way to the Best Picture category, though The Reader looks really great.
Best Actor, Mickey Rourke should win this, but both Benecio Del Toro and Sean Penn are giving amazing performances. DiCaprio is there because it will probably be there, and Brad Pitt might just turn up for his aging role. Supporting Actor is really really unlucky for Philip Seymour Hoffman who looks amazing in Doubt, but Heath Ledger is standing tall on that category. Brolin well deserves a spot too. Clooney was a bit of a joke addition, but it wouldn't surprise me if he did turn up.
Best Actress probably goes to Kate Winslet. Supporting Actress, the lamest category of them all, I just gave up on the final two and stole some from Strangeluv's list but I chose Kathy Bates, without any form of visual proof of her performance, just because she probably deserves another Oscar right about now.
Best Animation probably Wall-E, I doubt that even if Waltz with Bashir was in the category that it could beat the power of Wall-E. And finally, Foreign Film would hopefully go to Italy's Gomorrah, just because it's plain awesome.
I know you're probably going to reject most of this, with your crazy formulas for the Oscars and all that, but yeah. Just my thoughts. It's another pretty sweet year for films. Javier Bardem might creep in somewhere.
you've been making a lot of WHO CARES ABOUT THINGS posts lately and you really should cut it the fuck out. surprise, many people on GW watched DBZ when they were kids and wants to talk about it. double surprise, movie looks awful and apparently isn't at all like the original and people need to elaborate on why this is or isn't a good thing. you aren't any better for writing out about a page of why the movie industry should clap itself on the back for some movies and not others. there's no inherent maturity in thinking I BET BENJAMIN BUTTON WINS (WHO CARES IF ITS NOT OUT YET). you can say the movie will be awful or that people shouldn't expect good things from it but WHO CARES when you're busy writing imaginary lists no one could care about isn't the best petard to hoist.
