A published report says the Toronto District School Board's new equity expert is looking at establishing a black-only school in the city, as a way of combating a high dropout rate and problems with suspensions.

Lloyd McKell, the new executive officer of student and community equity for the board, told the Toronto Star that city schools don't do enough to make students of all backgrounds feel valued.

McKell told the Star a black-focused pilot school would be helpful for at-risk pupils, offering more black teachers, an Afro-centric curriculum and a more nurturing environment.

The school board confirmed that it is looking at the idea.

"I think we're talking about the possibility of a school that would have black-focussed programs -- but they'd be available to any student who wanted to attend them," board chair Sheila Ward told CTV News Toronto.

Ward insists the board needs to do more to prevent at-risk students from dropping out. And since the Safe Schools Act was introduced five years ago, more than 1,000 kids under the age of seven have been suspended. The majority of those suspensions are African-Canadian youth.

Ward says that of the suspension hearings she has attended, 98 per cent involved students of colour. "That says to me -- there's some kind of a problem."

McKell told CTV News he didn't want to comment directly on the proposal.

"I'm not going to speculate on what kind of a model we develop," he said Wednesday. "We do know that we are looking at the particular needs of students who have come forth to us and tell us that they need some adjustments in the way we deliver education."

Ward says a model for the school has been developed over the past summer. "Black students have told us they have had particular needs to be engaged in our schools that makes them feel a true part of our system."

This is such racist bullshit. First, they try to set up strictly religious schools in our city (Muslim, Hindu, etc), instead of trying to fund our already dysfunctional public education system. Next, they think of making "all-gay" schools. Now they're trying to make all-black schools? What the fuck? This is so wrong. This pretty much just segregates everything our city stands for -- MULTICULTURALISM and just isolates the oh-so-oppressed-blacks in our city. I don't know, I'm pretty pissed at decisions like this in my own city and just the waste of money. If this happened in your city what would be your reactions? What are you reactions to this at all, even?

If they're private schools I'd have no problem with it. But seriously, creating public enviornments that are segregated are not good.

When I first saw this topic I was like "....so?"

I dunno I guess it is pretty commonplace where I live but I really don't see the big deal.

Edit: Also since when were religious schools public because that is news to me.

uhh theres two all black schools in my home city

one is a black private school for rich kids called Beechroft Academy and the other is a school called Africentric (I can imagine that you can guess what their philosophy is (their sports teams are called... get ready for this: the Nubians lol))

(also I live in Columbus Ohio which is in the North and most of our black people are somalian or nigerian anyway)

In Ontario, the public and catholic school boards are publicly funded. People have been trying to push for other religious schools to be publicly funded too, but no one has been able to do it.

Also, from what I got from the article, they are making a public school that just has programs made more for black people than others, not a school FOR ALL BLACKZ. It even says that anyone would be able to attend the school.

I went to a high school of around 1700 kids, 200 or so of whom were black. 20-30 or so of those kids hung out in a really tight little all-black clique, and the rest just hung out with the rest of the student body pretty interchangeably with white kids/kids of other minorities. The idea that black kids are "at risk" and white kids aren't just "at risk" is preposterous. There are lots of white people in Toronto who are in the exact same income bracket as the black kids and so suffer from pretty much the exact same conditions in an academic environment (barring racism, of course, which is not very prevalent 'round these parts so far as I can tell). In fact, I'd go so far as to say that a much larger percentage of the black kids in my school (compared to the white kids) were actually doing better academically.

This is even dumber than every religion getting a publicly funded school board, but not by that much. I think the idea is founded in some archaic paradigm where every black person has one thing in common: they're black. Black people come from as many completely different cultures as white people do, and they all have their own celebrations and ways of doing thing. To lump all black people together into "blacks" is pretty fucking ridiculous. It would be like having an all-white school where everyone wore berets and walked around with faggy cigarettes in their mouths painting pictures because SOME WHITE PEOPLE DID THAT ONCE I GUESS!

i don't see what the problem with this is

like what is so RACIST about it

edit: like, ok, maybe i could understand if you thought it was racist because it's saying that IF YOU'RE BLACK YOU'RE GOING TO DROP OUT (ps it's not), but that's not why you think it's racist is it.

Once again the race card rears its ugly head! Personally, I think you guys are just too tightly wound when it comes to issues of race. If they want to open an all anything school then so be it. If there plan is to give students in need of special attention a chance to get a better education than does it really matter what color the student's skin is?

We were talking about this at dinner yesterday. Sounds like the seed for a future race war in Toronto (and subsequent places). My question is: "So how black do I have to be?"

EDIT: My friend (she is half-black) actually raised a good point. If we were to build a white-only school, people would be calling us white supremacists and nazis. So what do?

After reading the article the implication seems to be that the school would not be black-only, however it would be more afro-centric. Is this true? In which case the white-only example doesn't really make sense, because that's not what they are talking about.

I gotta say, though... I'm in favor of schools devoted to a particular religion, since religions imply a possibly different cosmology, culture and way of doing things, and a school dedicated to it means the kids of that religion would get educated in their religion. I know for sure there's muslim and jewish schools here in Chile.
