Sorry, I have a thing about Bay Area thrash, so I listen to quite a few metal bands. Mostly Megadeth, Metallica (I still maintain that Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning are fantastic albums, whatever may be said of their later material), Heathen and some Anthrax, though I do dabble a bit in other metal-ish styles. Type O Negative (recommended listening for all), Sonata Arctica (same), Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, and X Japan (and again) are probably my favourites.

Ooh, I listen to a lot less metal than I thought. Probably because of embarrassing pictures like that one. I've always cringed at that kind of metal fan, sorry if any of you guys are like that!

EDIT: Oh yeah man I forgot The Sword, they're pretty good too, I recommend them.

I hope you are kidding when you say Jesu is not metal.
They are not metal. As DS said, yeah, they do have a lot of elements of metal, but they are not metal. MAYBE post-metal, whatever that is.

Let's not argue about what is metal and what isn't. This always happens to Metal topics and they end up going downhill, fast.

yeah
less dumbassing more talking about metal

Quote
Exsecratus was found by O. Mattila in the early spring 2004. Soon N. Hartikainen joined the band. After a few quick member changes, the first whole line-up was completed. During the following autumn E. Vihma and A. Päivinen were found to complete the new style of Exe.

Soon after new year '05 M. Niemelä took his place behind the drums and the name eXsecratus was decided to be the new name of the band.

In spring '05 Mr. Niemelä left the band due to musical and personal differences. Soon to leave was also E. Hartikainen because of his military service.

During the summer and autumn '05 new songs were made, and in early '06 T. Kauhajärvi became a fulltime member even before his first practice session with the band..

Later in the same winter ex-Elenium and Draugnim drummer J. Raatikainen joined the group to boost the effort to make it as a real, powerful and fast metal band.

In spring '06 E. Silvennoinen came along and filled the missing gap in the melody department. So Exe became stronger and made their first demo 19.8.-1.9.06, which was named execute.

On october -06 E.Vihma and A.Päivinen left the band due to personal difficulties between them and the rest of the band. The following day L-M.Hovila filled the gap in lead-singing department. And less than week from that, K.Rautiainen became a serious candidate for the soon-to-be-found solo-guitarist.

And so Exsecratus returned to the rehersal-place and started to kick some newbie-ass. Not too long after that, Exsecratus as a fully functional metal-regiment once more and rose to the stages again in early december -06. In january -07 Exsecratus did their first tour around Finland with Ensiferum. Five cities in five days, and it was a ride worth wile.

In March ´07 Exsecratus did their first gig outside Finland. St.Petersburg accepted the band with arms wide open.

A week after that Exsecratus and K.Rautiainen went separate ways. The desicion was extremely difficult, but things weren´t working the way they were supposed to.

After few weeks of mourning, Tony Hentilä was announced as the new guitar player / back-up singer. This young fellow seemed perfect to fill the gap K.Rautiainen had left. And also his singing brought new dimensions in the clean parts of Exsecratus.

...And so the tale continues.

Sure if you decide to disregard their s/t and Silver. Even Conqueror has some metal elements.
I bought Conqueror at the store because I was told they were post-rock ish and I heard them mentioned a couple of times here...I fell in love <3<3<3

Yeah, Jesu is fantastic. I like their newest EP Lifeline and their split with Eluvium a lot.

Man, I don't care about what anyone says about Killswitch Engage, but Howard Jones has the sexiest man voice ever. Symphony X is quite possibly my favorite progressive metal band ever, I suggest anything off their album Paradise Lost. Nevermore is pretty good too in my opinion, they have an amazing guitarist but the vocalist gets annoying really fast. Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment if you're into old school prog metal. If you prefer death metal-ish stuff, Quo Vadis (the drumming in Silence Calls the Storm is absolute class), Bury Your Dead, Arsis (anything on a Celebration of Guilt has amazing riffing) and Parkway Drive. Im also very fond of Blind Guardian and Demons & Wizards (ewww power metal I know I know).

I also couldn't help but notice that Strapping Young Lad and Protest The Hero are both relatively well known Canadian metal bands.... well, in Ontario anyway. Check out 3 Inches of Blood and Into Eternity sometime.

Vintersorg is pretty good his first two albums weren't as progressive and his last album wasn't that great, but you might like the ones in between.

I've heard Pelican is a lot like Isis but without the vocals, but I have never heard them myself actually.

Edit: downloading some pelican now

I'm pretty in to Post Metal, like ISIS, Rosetta, Pelican, and Cult of Luna. I also like some other Metal band like Mastodon, Gojira, and Tool. Most of the stuff I listen to is pretty progy, so if you like that kind of stuff, check out the bands I mentioned.

Dream Theater has been a huge influence on the prog. metal scene for the past fifteen years, I'm going to second that recommendation. Their best albums are Images and Words and Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory. I haven't really listened to LTE, but they are essentially Dream Theater so you probably can't go wrong! Lacuna Coil is also pretty metal (Earlier stuff only). I'd recommend them too.

Good mainstream stuff:
-Slayer
-Iron Maiden
-Judas Priest
