Metal I listen to (if you don't like it, I don't care. I don't feel like arguing over my music preferences):

In Flames
Soilwork
Avenged Sevenfold
Disturbed
Demon Hunter
Mushroomhead
Spineshank
Trivium (Old Stuff)
Tool
One Minute Silence
8 Foot Sativa
40 Below Summer
Children of Bodom
36 Crazyfists
Atreyu
Hypocrisy

There's a lot more, but I'm not home and can't think of any right now.

I listen to a lot of metal and it's getting even worse since I started DJing at my college radio station (half of us are metalheads hahaha) and it's getting even worse now since I got promoted to being the assistant of the guy that makes the contract with labels so we get our albums and such...

A lot of you seem to really like post-rock/post-metal/atmospheric sludge metal or however you wish to call it so check all of these bands out they're really great.
Battle of Mice (really unique with female vocals)
Cult of Luna
Callisto
Gantz
ISIS
Minsk
Mouth of the Architect
North
Giant
Other Side of the Sky
Vi (heavier stuff)
Vanessa Van Basten

I've heard that Baroness were pretty good but I haven't checked them out yet. Besides that I'm a big fan of doom metal and some black metal bands. Such as:

Agalloch
Anathema
Electric Wizard
The Fall of Every Season
The Foreshadowing (GREAT BAND)
How Like A Winter
Katatonia
My Dying Bride
Swallow The Sun
Emperor
Alcest
Amesoeurs
Anorexia Nervosa
Deathspell Omega
old Dimmu Borgir
Gotherfall
Mayhem
and many many more.

Woah that's a bit random, this is a new zealand band. My friend joined briefly as the drummer and I've seen them three times.

I'm going to toss a few rarer names that are not mentioned much (if at all) around here I think are worth checking if you're into metal.

Let's start with Melodic Growl Metal band "Eternal Tears of Sorrow". It's awesome. They released a few albums in late 90's and early 2000 and then broke (in 2001 I believe). Last year the band decided to do a come back and released a new album (Before the Bleeding Sun). If you like epic, melodic, death, doom, black, progressive metal you'll find bit of all in EToS' production. Good starter song would be Prophetian from their 2001 album A Virgin and a Whore (which is also their best album so far imo).

If you prefer more classic hard rock and progressive style metal you might like "Twilightning". They've released 3 albums so far, which I all find extremely good. Very nice good choice for car music imo.

And last, "Masterplan". A prog (power and heavy prog) metal band. Their first album is full 10 / 10 material. The later albums aren't as good but still worth listening to. Should be good choice for anyone who likes progmetal.

I'm personally a fan of Symphonic, Progressive, and Power metal genres. Sometimes you get a bit of cheese mixed in with it all but for the most part you get some pretty epic and sublime melodies. My personal favorites include:

Pain of Salvation
Sieges Even
Symphony X
Beyond Twilight
Green Carnation
Nightwish
Within Temptation
Epica
Nocturnal Rites
Kamelot
Sonata Arctica
Circus Maxima
Serenity
Vanishing Point
Blind Guardian

Honestly I have not been able to find any other genres that evoke such an interesting and epic sound.

How can you be a fan of Symphonic metal and not mention Therion. Blasphemy.

Do you guys think metal in general is getting more popular? or in the states? I keep hearing about bands like Behemoth, Dragonforce and Dimmu making it into the billboard chart.

Behemoth made it to the charts? wow! Dragonforce is simply 'cos their really really cheese... Dimmu's last album was such trash man (well their more recent albums were all meh imo).

I finally checked out Sonata Arctica and wow... It's the only power metal band that really got me man. I've been listening to them A LOT. Unia seems a little harder to get into depending on the song though. Ecliptica was very very good especially Fullmoon. But Unia is growing on me so much... Under Your Tree, For The Sake of Revenge.... wow

o_O I forgot to mention them (although I left out a ton of bands I like but aren't as significant). I'm a personal fan of Secret of the Runes - great album.

Ya, Sonata Arctica is pretty damn awesome. The first two albums (Ecliptica and Silence) are great power metal albums. Very melodic and catchy. The next two (Winterheart's Guild and Reckoning Night) are pretty bland and boring compared to the first two. Unia, however, is just totally awesome. It's less powerful but more heavier and the tunes are just pure eargasm. I really hope Sonata Arctica continues the style they had in Unia in the future! Unia is one of my favorite albums ever.

Agreed. Although I do like My Seleene and White Pearls, Black Oceans. Unia was great - best album so far. It took me forever to love though, I actually hated it at first.

I used to listen symphonic/power metal a lot, but now I'm just full of it. I've really started to like some 80's/early 90's metal..
I just got Loudness - On The Prowl, ..now I find Loudness pretty.. crappy, apart from awesome guitar riffs and solos, but they have 2 albums with Mike Vescera in vocals and I just love them.

If anyone could point some bands with similar sound, I'd appreciate it. I know this "sound" is very common in that particular era, still..

EDIT: Also some melodic death metal would be nice too, I really like stuff sucha as Children of Bodom, Wintersun and Suidakra..

I think that Dethklok is fun to listen to, but I'm also pretty sure the point of them is to sound like crap.
