Zero Punctuation

Does any one here remember Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw? He created those games in AGS: 5 Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, Trilby's Notes, and one last one I can't seem to remember.

Well apparently he has a review site where he has little videos complete with crazy (and usually funny) drawings that accompany his voice. As it is called "Zero Punctuation", he rambles on consistently without stopping at all and goes extremely fast, but you can usually make out what he says. If not, go back some. (I'm also pretty sure he records segments then sticks them together because there's no way to talk that fast for so long without stopping.)

Anyway, I'd advise you to check it out. He actually has some good reviews and makes really good points in most of them, all while pointing out any flaws and/or making jokes about parts of the game. It's all good fun and I recommend you watch some. The Assassin's Creed particularly hits home for me.

Check it out!

ZP is amazing, definately recommend it.

Also he does very long segments and puts them together.

He is a SA'er too.....

Yahtzee is hilarious, and I loved his adventure games. Did you guys know he's going to be a reviewer for PCGamer Magazine now because of his videos? (The US edition that is, not the UK).

I've been watching his videos for a while now. He manages to make valid points and be funny, which pretty much every other net reviewer makes seem impossible.
Anyway... I played a bit of this... And I'm not so fond of the setting. I hate that whole ghetto "gangsta fo life" thing, and I've never been much of a baseball player.

hmmmmm

not to PULL A PANDA here but i think zero punctuation is actually a pretty shitty gimmick.  i really really did not want to have to come into this topic and say the exact opposite of what everyone else had said so far because that is a little too obvious but no one else seems even close to saying it!

i think the problem is i do not really see him as being hilaaaaarious in the slightest.  how is what he says funny or witty again?  it's just a lot of random irate ranting and similes most of the time.  watching and listening to his reviews for actual content, it's difficult to differentiate between him and shit like x-play and every other reviewer out there who prides himself on "telling it like it is heh."  you cannot really take what basically amounts to uninspired angry critiquing and make it funny by saying shit really really fast and with a british accent so that by the time people realize the shit you said wasn't funny you're already onto the next animated quasi-witticism.  honestly, the entire thing strikes me as being very similar to GILMORE GIRLS but about videogames instead of BOY'S or whatever the fuck gilmore girls was about.

also the reviews themselves are fairly often sort of off base.  it seems like a pretty decent amount of the shit he criticizes in some games is just based around them not being xhardxcorex enough (for example, this one steel linked me to a while back on peggle).  the entire REVIEWS FOR THE HARDCORE GAMER thing comes off, to me, as being a pretty worthless gimmick since the basis for a lot of the critique tends to be unreasonable.  but there's also the fact that a lot of the shit he goes over is really kind of obvious and could easily be stated in, i don't know, less than five minutes of non-stop witty monologue (somewhere in this statement irony abounds, i am aware).  so why make entire video reviews going over either nit-picky or really fundamental, obvious shit that could either be omitted or said much more concisely and without all the annoying oh that yahtzee he's such a bitch remarks?  pandering self-indulgence which, to me, is a really repugnant phenomena.  people love him apparently but all i see are 1) kind of bad points, 2) valid but painfully obvious points (both spread over several minutes of chatter), and 3) masturbation.

bazookatooth, I think you might be holding zero punctuation to different standards than everyone else.  I don't think there is supposed to be any kind of gimmick.  It's just a guy who rants about his thoughts and feelings about games, like we all probably do every day.  Either it's amusing enough for you to watch or it isn't.

Yeah, you really think too much about it bazzokatooth. It's not like people will go "I wonder if I should buy this game? Let's see what he thinks." People like this because it's biased reviews of games made in a funny and original way. It's made to be funny, not a fully detailed review of the stuff.

I've been watching his reviews on the escapist magazine website since he started being advertised there. What I like about them is that either you agree or not on what he thinks of a game, you still find him funny and it's a great 4 minutes of laugh. You either like his humor or not. I don't like targ but I don't go around calling it a gimmick.

except i don't really think they're supposed to be ultra-biased reviews, considering all of you guys are like YEAH SPOT ON MAN SPOT ON, so gonna have to disagree on that front!  also, i would call it uninspired and a little sad before i'd say funny and original.  if it's made to be funny and not detailed, then why does he go into so much detail?

the majority of the time not only do i not agree, but i don't laugh at all.  I DON'T LIKE THE HUMOR AND YOU DO okay that is acceptable but i'm not calling it a cheap, masturbatory gimmick because i don't think it's funny; i'm saying it because it's what it is.  i'd say it even if i DID think he was even slightly funny.

Something tells me the british (funny according to marcus idk) accent isn't a part of his attempt to distract from the quasiness of his witticisms

edit: the talking really fast kind of is though I suspect

yeah you're right, the accent is authentic i think, and i never really doubted that.  what i meant is that i think people tend to think things said by someone with a british accent sound more intelligent.  as silly as it is, sophisticated-sounding british accents probably do quite a bit to make someone seem more intelligent to a lot of people!
