Suspects in the Bhutto assassination (Guardian)
The Bhutto family tragedy explained (Times Online)
Benazir Bhutto (Wikipedia, contains stuff about her OWN alleged corruption, as well as her tenure as Prime Minister)
Assassination attempt (Wikipedia)

This is a fucking shame.  Bhutto was really ace in helping clean up some of the corruption in Pakistan.  Ugh, dude.  I can't really say anything else right now.  Just...ugh.

Bhutto was never much of a hero, actually; the media just made her out to be one.

With that said, she DID have a tragic life (as documented in her autobiography, really saddening) and one can't help but feel sorry for her now, fighting for a near-hopeless cause.

Also, it's times like these I wish religion never existed. =/

fuck. She's escaped a few failed assassination attempts so you'd think they'd improve security or she'd be more careful in public. I can't say I'm surprised this happened, but it's still very sad.

Regardless, she was still doing good for a country that was having a hard time doing good for itself.  In that sense, it is a great shame that this happened, and that the circumstances even came to pass that allowed her to be killed just makes it worse.

each time I look at this kind of news I realize some people have absolutely no respect for human life...
It's sickening.

I have a good friend from Pakistan, and she's at home with her family for the holidays right now. According to her, the political and civil situation there doesn't look too good at all. In the light of all that's happening, I hope she's alright.

I have a friend who's from Pakistan and has a similar situation. She has a lot of family there and originally moved out of the country to avoid the political situation.

But ya, I don't really know much about Bhutto, it's just sad to see people assassinating for political reasons. It's just outrageous what religious extremists will do, and the amount of security needed for people in these situations.

Keep in mind we have absolutely no idea who did it yet, and probably never will. They seem to be doing all they can to NOT look into it. On the BBC just now we had footage of firefighters washing all the evidence away, hooray!

Man, one of the prevailing themes I noticed throughout scanning all these videos at work is that I know I didn't see the actual shots or the subsequent explosion in any of them.  There are also conflicting reports that can't seem to pin down whether it happened during or after the rally.  I think they should get that shit straight before they go pinning down suspects in a country where, frankly, anyone could be the suspect.  They're saying al-Qaida (but then why shouldn't al-Qaida claim it; they've claimed shit before just to make themselves seem more menacing); they're saying it could be internal government.  It could be anyone and I am certainly not going to speculate on a suspect when this just happened eight hours ago.

Didn't the assasin blow himself up? at least that's what I heard and yes this is tragic...

The closest I've heard to an actual corroboration on this stuff is that Associated Press spoke to a Pakistan People's Party spokesman, and he said that just before the blast, Bhutto was shot once in the neck and once in the chest.  It's still unclear whether the gunfire or the shrapnel actually killed her.

Oh, and videos I've seen have her poking out of the sunroof of her vehicle waving, so I'm guessing that kind of detracted from her survivability.

Holy shit, this is practically a Pakistani version of the JFK assassination.

It did seem kind of a feat that a single man firing two shots with an AK47, while maneuvering a motorcycle no less, would hit her with both shots.  Like the JFK assassination, we may never know for certain.  Like Lee Harvey Oswald, her suspected assailant is dead.

edit: so the story is changed now, no AK47?

Evangel, have you seen the apparent shooting? It looked like a pistol to me.

Well someone's lying, great.

I think blaming Al-Qaeda would be some convenient propaganda for Musharaf (though it definitely could have been Islamist militants), but it easily could have been someone from Musharaf's government itself. I guess it would depend on how much his regime would gain from the assassination.

This is the weirdest part I think.

so yeah apparently Musharraf has stated that the parliamentary elections will be delayed

so Bhutto comes into the country after 8 years of self-imposed exile... Musharraf declares martial law. she is killed several weeks later. sigh.

I wouldn't put it past our gold old pal Musharraf to pull this off and blame it on terror in an attempt to blanket himself from suspicion again. He's done quite a lot of rotten shit under the excuse of 'fighting terrorism'.

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

All I know, is this was not mistake, and WAYYYYY to convenient for her opposition. I am sure he had something to do with it especially since he was supposed to help protect her as part of an earlier agreement.

uh huh

I read about this at work.  Seems pretty convenient if you ask me.  By the way, not really weighing for or against her at this point, this just might be a contributor to her death.
