Ah, thanks much.  Already the tut is helping me along much further than what I was getting through on my own.  The interface definitely takes some getting used to as I'm extremely RM2k minded going through this, but I'm making do with the setup.

I asked Globoeil (the head-honcho of VGMDS) if it was possible for him to make the interface more RM2K-esque, but he was lazy and didn't want to mess with it :P

Did you ask him on the forums there?  I saw a question similar to that with a similar response. :P

And holy crap, the guy implemented touch screen controls too!?  I didn't know it was capable of that.  I tried out the Zelda demo again and saw a soldier say "don't touch me."  So I flipped the screen and touched him and he exploded!  Every other soldier I passed on the way I touched to similar results.  I then read further in the tutorials and saw indeed it's really capable of that. (easily too)  I've got so many ideas for touch that the original project I was going to start has been totally scrapped for something new.  How limited is it though?  Even if it's just on point touching that is still quite an achievement.

EDIT:  Bah, to Grunthor or Mr. Epic Hero, how in the world do you set your hero's starting position?  I can't figure out how and the one tutorial that might have explained it doesn't seem to be up anymore.  I bet it's something simple and I'm simply overlooking it though. :P

Sorry Kezay, I forget :(

I had lost my Passme card a while back so I can no longer check. I was only really into development of VGMDS back in like summer of last year lol. If I get my passme again I'll have to help him out some more :D

Open up the map you want your character to start on and press B where you want him to appear. You should see a white square with an S in the middle.   At least that's how I did it.

Thanks much, that did the trick. (and as I said, so simple a thing but I had been overlooking it :P)

Anyway, the more I've played with this maker the more I realize how awesome it is.

1.  I did not know movement was pixel based versus tile based
2.  Event cloning mechanic is f***ing brilliant, beats the heck out of having to create separate events all with their own switches and variables.
3.  Built in gravity feature is nice.  My first project might end up being a small platformer tech demo just to help get acclimated with the system a bit more.

Some limitations are bit of a letdown, but it's more to do with the hardware from what I've read and even so, all the other additions make up for it I'd say.

Here's another list that has some good stuff on it.

Pretty good list.  Anyway, are they sure that shareware files will work to make games like DoomDS and Quake work?  I read that they couldn't, and even tried and they didn't work, unless those are of earlier versions or I'm simply lacking later versions of those projects.

Anyway, my first project in VGMDS is going to be a tacky shmup.  It's not so much a real project as it is just a tech. demo to help me get acclimated with the system and having to show off just because I can. :P

As a fan of Eureka 7, you can probably guess where I'm going with this. ;)

I never could get ComicBood DS to work.  I really only wanted it to see if I could convert that Metroid Manga since, but I decided to go through the hassle of making it work within Imageviewer.  Works fine that way, but I would have preferred trying to get CBDS to work.

I really shouldn't be posting this because it's rather irrelavent to the topic but I sent this to Globoeil and we're going to see if he can make the interface for VGMDS 2 look something like this:

That's pretty nice actually.  The program could use a cleaner interface; though I've finally gotten around to knowing where everything is, a bit more organization would be nice.

I've discussed it with Globoeil and this interface will indeed be used! I've updated it loads since I posted those images, of course, but it will utilize that sidebar to help you get around to what's important. And it looks sexy.

Also, online multiplayer and basic multiplayer functionality are all coming with VGMDS 2. Amazing, I never thought this DS homebrew app would get as advanced (and more advanced) than even RM2K. Now if only you could write your game to a DS cart :)

VGMDS 2!?  What is this all about?

Anyway, gotta ask, is M3 DS Real any good?  I initially opted for R4 last year because of some of the things it apparently did far more conveniential than M3 DS Simply; but I've been reading around regarding M3 DS Real and it's apparently pretty awesome.  The main thing I'm interested in is the fact it has a cleaner interface, built in general applications like PDA support, auto DLDI patching, support for SDHC up to 8 GB and unless I'm mistaken (at least from what I've read, but some reviews seemed sketchy at this part) you don't have to reboot the system everytime you wanted to go to another menu.  For example, in R4, once I boot up moonshell for multimedia purposes, I can't backtrack to the main menu so I can choose slot 1 and work on my VGMDS project, I have to reboot the system.

My bro has been wanting an R4 ever since I got one and I figured that if M3 DS Real really is how I'm interpreting as, I'll just pass my R4 to him and pick up "real" instead.

You can backtrack to the main menu..just press start when you're at the moonshell screen or game list screen. I mean for the R4 of course.

Sorry to bump the topic but could somebody please explain CLEARLY what I would need to do to run homebrew (mostly roms) on my DS and if it's possible on the older DS? I understand I need an R4 but do I truly need a MicroSD or whatever it is?

Arg.... the PSP homebrew is so much simpler.

If this is against any forum rules, please lock it but be aware that I'm not asking any links to illegal files and such. I'm only asking how it can be done.

What you need to use an R4:
-1 DS (any)
-1 R4
-1 MicroSD card and some way to connect it to a computer (many cards come with them)

Place files on the MicroSD card, insert the card into the R4, insert the R4 into the DS.  It's simple.

I should be expecting to pay how much for a R4 + MicroSD and do you have a certain recommendation of a brand or place to buy them?

$13 for a 2GB MicroSD card and about $35 for the R4.
NewEgg is a good place to get the MicroSD card, I don't know of any place that has R4s in stock.
