If this is true, there are going to be a lot of disappointed customers.  The core idea behind console gaming is that everybody has the same thing and that nobody needs to spend extra money to keep up like they do with PC gaming.  It's a little lame when you drop $200 or more dollars on a new graphics card every two years, and even then, you have to tweak down the graphics on the newest games.

It's one thing to release new consoles with only tangential upgrades; I could really care less that my unit is a different color than someone else's and does not have HDMI support.  But if Microsoft releases a new 360 with a truly substantial upgrade (such as HD-DVD discs used to store game media), it will be an enormous bummer to the 11 million people that have already purchased previous iterations.

This could be off since HD-DVD has had the massive blow of losing both Warner Bros and New Line for films. Microsoft might have to consider things.

Damn you Microsoft!  I just bought a damn 360 and you come out with a new one!

Is this how consoles are going to be in the near future?  There are no more new generations, just the same system with better specs?

um

Playstation -> Playstation one

Playstation 2 - Playstation X - Playstation 2 Lite

etc

its nothing REALLY new

in fact the car industry does the same thing and so do other industries

do you complain when you buy a new Mazda 2008 and then the 2009 one comes out, same car but better specs?

Isn't this what Sony was going to do with the PS3?  It was gonna be one console but every three or four years you bought an upgrade package that added more ram and a faster processor.

stupid ideas are stupid.

actually a fourth, lighter version of the ps2 was released just recently. lemme find where I heard that. http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3164186

but yeah, i think all the new models are pretty unfair to those who bought a console just before the announcement was made.

Also since the HD-DVD camp canceled their press event.  I doubt this rumor will come to be.
Yay! Random words!

They've now announced that they're not going to have an internal HD-DVD player in any of their machines. I think the Warner Bros/New Line announcement messed them up.

Yeah, the different versions of the PSX and PS2 don't CHANGE THE CAPABILITIES of the system in the sense that you might be limited on what games you can buy.  What they were talking about is that if (and apparently this isn't happening) there was a built in HD drive, games could be put on those HD discs, meaning only people with that drive could play those games.

Microsoft and Sony are utter cocks.
Nintendo sold more Wii's than Sony did PS3's in December at 3 to 1.
Sony has to keep bringing out different spec packages to even sell their console because they decided they wanted a 10 year platform that would have some shiny new hardware that wasn't just 3 of the same old processor cobbled together, but they kind of forgot that £299 for the 40GiB version which has a number of features removed is still a lot of money when the national minimum wage for the UK is £5.52 an hour for people over 22 (£182 ish a week after government raping if you work the same hours I do).
Microsoft seems to keep saying "we've made the greatest console ever!", and then they release a new pimped out version a few months later.
I pre-ordered my 360 premium, so I got that shitty little controller, and I've had a number of problems with it.
I have a TV with HDMI ports, but because they only included HDMI on the premium after releasing the elite (wait, wasn't HDMI one of the two main reasons to get an elite along with the 120GiB HDD?), I have to use component (though it's good enough, it's still more hassle than just having one cable).
I paid a fucking fortune for my Premium, and I know at least one person who has the elite, but because Microsoft dicks about so much, we've both been fucked up the ass in one way or another.
I've only recently got my 360 back from being repaired as it's the third time it's bricked itself, but a month of LIVE subscription is only good if you have access to LIVE, and to be honest, I don't use Gold for much, and I know people who don't use LIVE at all.
They include a survey for you to tell them how good their service is, but to be honest, if they're shitting on early adopters and giving new owners the Earth, they'll not get anything positive from me.

As for the HD-DVD issue, the big problem is of course, that there hasn't been a cheap player available, yet the PS3 comes ready for use as a Blu-Ray player straight off the bat, and while it started off at a stupid price, it was still cheaper than going out and buying a stand alone player, and you got the benefit of being able to do other random crap on it as well (how many PS3 owners actually make regular use the ability to install linux?).
I own a 360 and a Wii, with most of my gaming being done on the 360 (when it's not on fire), but to compare the PS3 40GiB to the 360 Premium, I'd be more hard pressed now, with only the 360's stronger line up of available games swaying me as there's only £50 between them, the PS3 has a bigger HDD, it does Blu-Ray, it doesn't have a brain hemorrhage every few months due to normal use, it has HDMI as standard and you don't have to buy a fuck ton of additional hardware to use WiFi or to charge your controller batteries (though the Wii is more of a battery fiend than the 360).

Microsoft has teamed up with BT to bring BT's TV set top box functionality to the 360, though it's only for BT Total Broadband users, meaning your shitty 8Meg connection is being whored by your show ruiningly loud 360 just so you can watch that episode of Heroes you missed... I have Virgin, so I'll stick to the 20Meg broadband and HD capable PVR \ cable set top box that is silent.
Also, I don't think many people will actually use the BT features as many have the 360 exploding issue ingrained in their memories, and having to turn off your set top box for fear of it exploding is a pain in the ass (it also makes PVR style recording of shows you're not already watching a bitch as you'd have to be at home to turn on your 360 to record them).
I say they look more like german/caveman then asians.
