Based on the Upton Sinclair novel "Oil!", There Will Be Blood is a film produced, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. P.T. Anderson is perhaps most well known for his sprawling multi-character epics Boogie Nights (1997) and Magnolia (1999), as well as the quirky romance-comedy Punch Drunk Love (2002) with Adam Sandler.

Shooting began in mid-May 2006 in New Mexico and Marfa, Texas, with principal photography wrapping August 24, 2006. The film was released on December 26, 2007 in New York and Los Angeles. A sneak preview screening was held in 14 select cities on December 29, 2007. The national release is planned for January 11, 2008.

On imdb, it is described as "A story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centered around a turn-of-the-century Texas prospector (Daniel Day-Lewis) in the early days of the business."

There Will Be Blood stars Academy Award winner and three-time nominee, Daniel-Day Lewis (probably best known as Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York) and Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine). Day-Lewis has won a slew of awards so far for his performance and is even expected to take him the Best Actor Oscar. The movie itself has been nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards. Paul Thomas Anderson has been nominated for Best Director at the DGA, one of the most prestigious awards.

I am very interested in seeing this movie as I am a fan of Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel-Day Lewis (this has to be like the most consistently good actor nowadays).

Hi you should probably mention Jonny Greenwood did the score

It's kind of funny how nobody cares about this movie :x Maybe I'll go see it but Daniel-Day Lewis reminds me of this guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuPXymJEldE especially in Gangs of New York

Oh yah, Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead did the score, as Ragnar said. The score won a Critics Choice award and got nommed for a Golden Globe too, I think.

This movie looks terrific if you're into those tycoon epic thingies, man.

So, I saw this over the weekend. It was really, really weird. It wasn't anything like what I was expecting. Drastically different than everything else PTA has done.

I liked it though. I mean, I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, but it was still pretty cool. It definitely felt like I was watching a classic, so it's neat getting to experience that in theaters. It kind of drags on in some places, but the crazy ending wouldn't be as good if it didn't build up to it like it did. So yeah, I would recommend it, but just realize before you go in that it's pretty slow paced.

b-dump

I just saw this and it was literally the best film that's been released over the last few years. DDL/Paul Dano are incredible. There are some seriously tense moments, and others where I was literally crying with laughter (note: salvation scene).

Genius film. Hello Kubrick.

I might add that Daniel Day-Lewis did win a well-deserved academy award for best actor for this movie.

Paul Thomas Anderson is fantastic, if a bit crazy.  While I thought the film was good, there were better ones released last year.  Daniel Day-Lewis gave the performance of his life, though.  I'm glad he won the Oscar.  The score was fitting to the film, but that's the most I can say about it.  It really drew attention to itself.

This flick reminded me of Citizen Kane. The campiness, the slow onset of emotions in each scene and the epic scope of it all, combined with the fact that it's about one man that can both be considered a success and a tragic character at once, with the former overshadowing the first half and the latter overshadowing the second half. Cool stuff!

This was a really great movie. I went in not knowing what to expect (I thought it may have been a horror movie) and was genuinely impressed. It takes a special kind of movie to hold my interest, and this one, being two and a half hours long, would really have to work hard to keep it. Which it did with relative ease.

The pacing was pretty slow, but in a very deliberate way, which served to emphasize each scene and fill it with enough emotion to really get its point across. The acting of Day-Lewis was supurb, and were it not for him I don't believe the film could've carried the weight it did. That is not to downplay the excellent score however. The music played an integral role in shaping each scene and truly brought out the emotions it was intended to bring out. Many times the music procured anxietal and grating feelings from within me, and while these feelings aren't necessarily great ones to experience- they definitely did a wondrous job of connecting me with the movie. Had the soundtrack strictly been this I may have had less appreciation for the movie, but it was complemented with several pleasant pieces as well.

I guess that's what stands out most to me about the movie. There is of course much more to it, but I can't gather my thoughts enough to go on.

I want to see this so bad. Have to wait till it hits the 2.50 theater though, as it is not playing in the regular one at the moment.
