I know metal is a pretty generic genre, but I'm just looking for anything in that big genre. Preferably bands that don't chug. I've noticed that the more I play guitar, the more I play in a metal style. I'm just looking for music that is similar to a style I play in so I can hear the different rhythms and scales that are used. Sorry if it's vague as hell, but I'm sure some of you have know some good music that is to be discovered.

What kind of metal?  It's hard when you just say METAL.

I listen to a lot of folk and symphonic metal...I dunno if violins and accordions mixed with guitars are your thing though.

Also, The Chasm pretty much makes all other death metal obsolete, so if you like death metal at all check them out. I really only listen to them, Bal-Sagoth, Blind Guardian, and Judas Priest anymore, but I could give you a lot of recommendations based on stuff I used to listen to if you name a certain genre.

Listen to Nocturnal Rites, they are a power metal band and they have a great guitarist.

Metal without the "chug"? Are you insane?
jk...Um yeah Arch Enemy maybe? Your prolly looking for more symphonic metal, If you dont want alot of chugging. Im just going to name random bands[and ][/and] I would consider minimum-chug metal:

Arch Enemy
Dope
Disciple [note: ][/note:]
Lamb of God
Shadows Fall [I dont like them but I guess you could check them out]
Firewind [Power ][/Power]
The Neverending

Ok actually that last one is my band and we dont have any recordings yet so shut up
And so what if Im naming random band names off the ESP guitars sponsorships list shut up i don care

So I checked out all the bands listed in this thread and here's what I got:

The Chasm - If by The Chasm you mean http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=44318048 they're pretty good
Bal-Sagoth - aw man, these guys are pretty fucking epic. not really my style, but I like what they do.
Blind Guardian - not hard enough for my taste (i like screaming rawr) but i'm not downing them. they are good in their own respect.
Judas Priest - i really like guitar work in angel and in all their songs, the vocals are pretty cool. its growing on me.

Nocturnal Rites - good guitar, don't like vocals.

Arch Enemy - They've got the speed I'm looking for and the drums are fucking sick. kudos.
Dope - No.
Disciple - LoL. No offense, but no thanks.
Lamb of God - Not fast enough. But, they're pretty straight.
Shadows Fall - Eh, not really. If I were to pick a band on guitar hero I like, I'd probably pick All that Remains over these guys.
Firewind - Negative.

Necrophagist - fav song on the myspace. fermented offal discharge. pretty good.
Decrepit Birth - a gathering of imagination. not really leaning towards them, nor away. pretty neutral.
Gorod - 1 like the first 2 songs on the space. pretty decent. thumbs up
Nile - Eh, can't really put my finger on it. but I'm not really into them.

Symphony X ---------------\
Winter Sun ---------------> Not cheesy just not for me.
Dream Theater -----------/

Between the Buried and Me - not really.
Architects - see above
Protest The Hero - cannot stand the singers voice
Into The Moat - i like setting of ways but i can't hear the other song, it won't load =(
Dead to Fall - c1. (That means affirmative for you non-csexers)
Botch - nahh
Converge - i like the broken vow, but not the other ones
The Faceless - missing something..

Meshuggah - simply put, they know whatsup
Sikth - stuff i could chill too
Textures - neutral
Periphery - they've got interesting compositions
Red Seas Fire - i like the demo 01, but the other stuff kinda sounds the same =X
Bulb - absolomb and fuf :)
Ephel Duath - jazz metal is in a class of its own
*Shels - other stuff i could chill to

How Like A Winter - eh, not really leaning towards them.
The Fall of Every Season - really fucking chill. cool.
Lacrimas Profundere - not really feelin it
Profugus Mortis - this either
Anorexia Nervosa - ""
Alcest - hate me for it, but im going to call this pretty
Amesoeurs - this is pretty alright

Took some time to go through all of them, but I did it. I'd like to mention through the eyes of the dead, mainly the song beneath dying skies <3. I like their stuff. I'm not totally against chugging, just not overdoing it. So based on this new information, what could you say about my taste as far as which "genre" I would most like and what other bands can you recommend?

Heres another Into the Moat Song. This is what they pretty much sound like now
I love it
http://youtube.com/watch?v=y1apIcQeBo0
Heres the song that wouldn't load. Best one I could fine, but its just some guy who recorded it on his tv. You can still hear it pretty clearly though.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=jowWNVWE1mA&feature=related

From what you listen, you seem to be more into Deathcore/Metalcore (Thats what Through the Eyes of the Dead are) and maybe some melo-death.
You could try
Beneath the Massacre
http://youtube.com/watch?v=cC-4ZRkVnOM
At the Gates
http://youtube.com/watch?v=EcI3IeTMOi0
The Black Dahlia Murder
http://youtube.com/watch?v=lIKuXnzuYGs
Ion Dissonance
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zItj3x_FcA8 (It'll sound like alot of chugging, but give it a shot)
With Passion
http://youtube.com/watch?v=gLgWkbYzr30
you will fail

actually I meant these guys http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=410
http://youtube.com/watch?v=jdx6VdynlLs this video isn't really them at their best and i have no idea what song it is but its the only one that i could find that wasn't from their new album.

Some Other Stuff:
Decapitated you've probably already heard of these guys though
Death again you've probably already heard of Death, but they are pretty great. this is off their last album which is nothing like there early stuff which is much more classic death metal, but this defiantly doesn't have the chug.
Mirrothrone gothic classical + metal type deal, pretty sweet
Dark Angel these guys are actually thrash and they are probably the most ridiculous metal band ever so i felt the need to mention them
Ghoul this is the side project of the guys from Impaled, and they have pretty much the best lyrics ever (listen to either ghoul hunter demo or as your casket closes)
Mictlantecuhtli listen to one last battle

Here are some bands/albums to check out:

Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
A seriously agressive thrash album. This album has influenced many death metal bands, and still holds its place as one of the fastest thrash albums ever.
Cynic - Focus
Death metal intertwined with various jazz, world, and even slight electronic music influences. Features varying time signature changes, "sythesized" and death-style vocals, and some very interesting guitar work.
diSEMBOWELMENT - Transcendence Into the Peripheral
Despite the fact that these guys are called doom metal, diSEMBOWELMENT put forth much more than just slow, doomy tunes. When they're not playing at their slowest, they bring the tempo way up, occasionaly moving into both death and black metal realms. Aside from that, they manage to uphold a dark, almost suffocating atmosphere using clean guitars (you'll see what I mean), as well as various ambient effects. The vocals also range from both a low death metal growl to a black metal rasp.
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
Melancholy, atmospheric, and quite minimalistic. Do not listen to this album expecting to hear any harsh vocals, crushing guitars, insane drumming, or anything of that sort. This is black metal in the slightest sense, but a fantastic album regardless.
Virulence - A Conflict Scenario
If Cynic was angrier and a bit more "all-over-the-place", this is probably what it would sound like. The melodies and riffs can really get strange, and the vocals only consist of pure screaming & pig grunts. Really melodic at some points and pure noise at others...
lol

Some bands I've gotten into within the past six months or so (considering myself generally not much of a metalhead):

Isis, Neurosis, Nadja, Alcest, Sunn O))), Orthrelm, Wolves in the Throne Room, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Burzum, Khanate

EDIT:  Really, Neurosis is the shit.  Check out "Through Silver in Blood" (album).

Try these metal bands out...

New Wave of British Heavy Metal:
Angel Witch (Great if you like the occult.)
Avenger (Most of their songs are really short, but it'll guarantee ya SERIOUS headbanging for sure once the guitar blasts off with the soaring vocals of Ian Swift.)
Cloven Hoof (My favorite power/speed metal band. If you like Iron Maiden, you'll have no problems here.)
Satan/Pariah/Blind Fury (Another great band that is easy to like if you like Iron Maiden. Steve Ramsey and Russ Tippins are such criminally underrated guitarists who have always came up with harmonic/melodic shit to even challenge Dave Murray and Adrian Smith in terms of technicality.)
Saxon (You gotta love Saxon.)

Speed/Thrash Metal:
Tourniquet (They're Christian, but listen to their early albums. Heavy as fuck!)
Disturbed (Yes. Look up the album "Disturbing the Peace." on YouTube.)
Pretty Maids (Underrated Danish power metal band.)

Keep it metal. \m/
