I have only recently began to understand why documentaries are such a "thing". I watched Micheal moores stuff, and then more recently king of kong, in the shadow of the moon, and the 11th hour.
All of these films were extremely awesome, and really eye-opening. I mean, maybe king-of-kong wasn't meaningful, but it was such a good story and so dramatic, I loved every bit of it.

Anyways, I wanted to delve deeper into this world of "Documentaries" because it has been nothing but good to me, and wondering if you guys had any recommendations? Whether it was something as spiritual and hope-instilling as In the shadow of the moon, or as eye-opening and off-pissing as Mr. Moore's Work.

Most of Louis Theroux's stuff is pretty interesting.

Some other cool documentaries are Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, This Film is not yet Rated, and Zoo.

-edit-
Also "mockumentaries" might be worth mentioning too. Some cool ones are The Confederate States of America and Death of a President.

You could try watching some conspiracy theory documentaries and form your own opinions on it all after watching.

There are tons out there, but the most recognisable are Zeitgeist & Loose Change (final cut is out now I believe). Also, just do searches on David Icke and Alex Jones on youtube or google video. They're interesting watches whether you believe it or not imo.

I like watching weekend documentaries randomly. Stuff on space, science, history and dinosaurs (who doesn't love dinosaurs?). I can't really say I've ever remembered the names of any of these though. Documentaries are mostly anonymous to me, the best ones are. They provide interesting info like non-fiction books but I will never remember the author or sometimes even the name of it. I'll just remember what it was about.

I saw one about Soviet political cartoons some time ago that was really interesting. Afterwards they showed a couple of Soviet cartoon movies. I gotta love YLE Teema.

When it comes to cinema documentaries I don't think I've ever... Oh wait I saw The Road to Guantanamo some time ago. I'm not sure I can recommend it though.

I never forget an Insult nor do I forget a compliment.

You can check this out for list of documentaries --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Documentary_Feature

My favourites are An Incovenient Truth, Hoop Dreams, The Thin Blue Line, Born into Brothels and Jesus Camp. I'd recommend all of those.

EDIT - Oh, and Jacques Costeau's stuff because I love marine stuff. If you're interested, check out his doc, World Without Sun.

I'm suprised Supersize Me's not been mentioned. I thought that was great.

Ross Kemp on gangs is one of the best documentary series' I've seen, it's really fascinating with the reasons why people go in gangs, their justifications and so on. Plus I have so much respect for the guy now, seeing some of the shit he went with in that show.
Confederate states of america is also pretty cool, and somewhat worrying. Louis Theroux has done some great stuff as well. I wouldn't recommend inconvenient truth as a "factual" documentary since many of the key points have proven to be false exaggerations. Michael moore's stuff is kina horribly done imo, it's very much sensationalism.

Yeah, if you don't want sensationalism don't go for any Michael Moore or An Inconvenient Truth, or any conspiracy theorist anything ever. Kaworu makes a great point about Ross Kemp on Gangs, that's a really good series, and both sides of the story are always presented. Good stuff, basically.

it depends what you like.  I will list some of my favorites!

Rumspringa - This is a documentary about the Amish people.  When they turn 18 they experience Rumspringa, a time when they can go out into "The Devil's Playground" (the real world) and do things like party, smoke, drink, do other drugs, USE ELECTRICITY!  Then they decide if they want to stay Amish or not.

Eathrlings - A documentary about the way humans abuse animals in the industries of food, entertainment, fashion, science...etc.  It will make you think and hopefully make some changes.

Raw For 30 Days (not out yet) - A documentary coming out sometime in Spring about 6 long term insulin dependent diabetics (One Type I, the rest type II) who went raw for 30 days.  After only 4 days they were all off insulin and after 30 days they were all cured (provided they stick with the lifestyle).

Heima - A documentary about the band Sigur Ros' tour through their home country of Iceland.  The music is amazing and the places they play at are awesome.  Iceland has gorgeous scenery.

Gaza Strip - A documentary about what average life is like for the Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip.

Occupation 101 - A documentary showing the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict up to today and talks about what the Israeli's do and other factors like US support and stuff.

I was gonna list a bunch about religious stuff but I forgot most of the titles :(.
There was one I saw about Noah's Flood how they tried proving it and it was interesting (they found chariot wheels in the Dead Sea, they found a rock with a little erosion supposedly where Moses hit it with the stick, and they found some hills that were black at the top).

Jesus and the Shroud of Turin is another interesting one.  It's about the Shroud of Turin they found and talking about if it is really authentic or not.

Oh and Jesus Camp!  That one is pretty crazy if you haven't seen it yet!

Also Inconvenient Truth is gay Al Gore is a hypocrite.

Also also Planet fucking Earth!
