Also, solid state devices have faster loading and stuff than discs and since there aren't any moving parts, there's less chance of a failure with the product itself.  While I loved the PS1 and the whole "video games move to cd" thing, I still prefer the cartridge machines because those things were INVINCIBLE.  You could drop them from your roof and they'd still play.  Now if you touch the PS3 the wrong way it shatters and the 360s are shipped with a ridiculous failure rate.  There are even reports of Wiis that are getting disc read errors because they're poorly manufactured and have too many god damn moving parts.

How much is hard drive space these days?  I've seen 2gb sandisk for 20-30$ at Best Buy; less for the off brand merchandise that doesn't come with throwaway software.  I say by 2010 we'll be looking at more and more digital media being sold on solid state devices.

You can easily get a 2GB Flash drive for about $10 on some online stores, so the prices of solid state devices are dropping VERY quickly. A year and a half ago the 4GB Sony memory sticks were being sold at about $100. Now they're only $50.
I've even seen Microsoft Vista being sold in flash drives by the way, so that sorta tells you something.

QFT! As a lad I threw most of my NES games against my basement wall in frustration, yet they still work today, as long as I blow hard enough (well that sounds extremely dirty). The problem is with both the software and the hardware; right now I have 2 broken systems, an Xbox and a Wii, and 10+ "broken" discs with a single scratch or smudge.

this is a OLD banner. the game itself is about 60% done.

I wish I could say the same.  I recently took my SNES out of storage and it no longer works (properly), I guess I just have horrible luck.

My SNES is starting to shit out as well.

But we digress.

I think Blu-Ray will be around long enough to nab a good portion of the market, but it will easily be replaced within the coming years. Just look at all the superior format options that are going to be available (solid state, HVD, anything).

My SNES still works fine

Also I enjoyed DVDs because like 3 DVDs can fit into the space a VHS takes up (space-wise not storage capacity)

Even though it probably will happen (because people are cunts) I sure hope Apple doesn't really beef up the iTunes video service so everyone just downloads movies from there - or weren't they trying to do some kind of box that hooks up to the TV?

Also if you're a rich bastard can you just like, buy film reels and a projector and show them in your own personal theatre? That would be awesome

Also anyone ever see porno in HD just wondering

i thought hd-dvd would win because blu-ray is a retarded word
this is exactly what i thought for a long time, too.  hd dvd is a very recognizable brand.  you've got HIGH DEF which people all have giant hard-ons for, and dvd, which is a household term.  hd dvd just sounds like people would accept it more readily than blu-ray.  also, the 360 is doing better here than the ps3 is, so that played a part too.  but what i didn't bank on was the fact that the ps3 actually included a blu-ray player, where the 360 had an hd dvd periph that costs like $200, and that even though the 360 is doing better in the states, the ps3 is seriously beating the shit out of it in japan (i don't even understand this; EVEN IN JAPAN the library of games for the ps3 is terrible and it's overpriced.  fucking japanese people), and i think the owners of both formats are based there, so naturally not only is that the first market they'd look to when determining whose format is more pervasive, but also on a global scale or whatever, things probably just aren't the same as they are here.  i kind of wish this wasn't the case, because the ps3 is gay as shit and i really just kind of want it to bomb and lose a ton of money and unfortunately that probably won't happen since a) it's a relatively inexpensive player of the new format of videos, and b) japanese people have no taste and for some reason are coming out in droves to buy a terrible console.

i don't really give a shit either way, since i don't plan on buying any of this stuff, but i don't want to have to say blu-ray.  hd dvd would've at least been okay.

For what it's worth, I own a 30mm projector and several reels of old cartoons like Felix the Cat.  I don't know why silver screen movies are still projected on old reel-to-reel projectors because these things are prone to malfunction, heat up quickly, and make a lot of racket (well, you can't hear it in the theater but you can if you own a personal one).

Heh. Maybe Imax can replaced their uber expensinsive 2 story projector with a Blu-ray player. They could probably film with their Imax cameras and fit everything on a couple of the Blu-ray discs. :D

Now that it's all over, I have to tell you guys something important. VHS is better than blue ray because it's analog!

(don't take this as TROLLING, it's just an article from the past that is somehow relevant to this subject)

I actually enjoy watching some movies in VHS more so than digitally, for many the same reasons some people enjoy records over compact discs.  They just have a cool old school look to them.

There is no DVD release of the original (80's) "Deadtime Stories" available. VHS is clearly the winner.

This came out of nowhere. Seriously. For a long while (2 years?) I thought Blu Ray was dieing out... and HD DVD was taking the lead. I've heard so little about Blu Ray recently that I thought it was finally being phased out. This is what I get for not actually looking into the matter.

For me it was the opposite.

When the format wars first started I figured that Blu-ray would be the loser.
After awhile I found the specs of Blu-ray, and how it has tons of DRM, more space, able to make 6 layered 300GB discs, etc.

I was kind of hoping it would win.

Now they should start slashing prices on DVD9-R. $1 a disc is a ripoff.

Adequacy is a parody site you know. All their articles are made to get people pissed. Their most famous one is the "How to tell if your son is a hacker" article.

Uh Is, from what i read from the beginning with i thought HD and Bluray had pretty similiar specs (well, i think Bluray had BIT more space than HD), apart from the fact that Bluray has some built-in burn/pirate-protection or similiar shit.

... Well, i kind of felt Microsoft ultimately shot itself to leg when they deciced to not to release a model of Xbox which had an built-in HD-DVD - player. That was REALLY stupid.

Blu-ray had the larger capacity for single layer.

15 GB for HD-DVD and 25GB for Blu-Ray.

HVD will be so sweet when that becomes available. I mean look at all the space you get its just insane. I think that by the time that is out and relatively cheap that will be the new HD format, there will be no war for that. By the time that we see HVDs being available Blu-Ray will be the DVD in its dieing years. HVD specs

I'm not really surprised Blu-Ray won but I was REALLY hoping HD-DVD would win out.

I feel bad for all of those people who bought HD-DVD players over the holidays because of the sales, it's only 2 months later and they're screwed.

The bottom line is that we will keep buying materials containing media until the bandwidth becomes available to stream these things to our systems at home.

"Using typical satellite radio encoding (CT-aacPlus at 40 kbit/s), a 3.9 TB HVD could hold over 26.5 years of uninterrupted stereo audio."

Nice.

Raves will never end.

Sadly about a 2 week a go my bro. told me this was coming and I work at a Wal-mart and Blu-rays sold more but if I was to compare them with normal DVD they seem to win ATM. Also why Blu-rays sold more was because PS3 came With Blu-ray from the begging Witch also was a deal because the first gen of Blu-ray players where about $400 more and Xbox360 had only DVD I believe then you had to Shell out ,ore money for the HD DVD player.
