Actually, apparently Sony stated that they are finally starting to make money with PS3. If I remember correctly, it costs them about $400 to make a new 40GB model. I'm not sure if they are already making profit with each console or if they will start making profit once the production values will drop even more though. Still, Sony has lost over 2 billion dollars because of PS3 so it needs to sell really well if Sony wants to actually make profit in the end. I think it's going to start selling a lot more sooner or later though, the price has gone down and probably will go down more, blu-ray won against hd-dvd plus it will finally start to get really good games this year, MGS4, LittleBigPlanet and GTA4 for example, possibly FF13 in Japan. I got my PS3 today and while it doesn't have a single really fantastic game so far, it got enough good games so that I finally wanted to buy one, especially with MGS4 coming out soon. And the new 40GB version was cheaper (still expensive though) so that helped.
Also, about what bazookatooth said, I might be wrong but didn't blu-ray finally win because Warner decided to go with it? I mean, the whole race was pretty much decided on who the movie companies will support, wasn't it? I'm sure there was more to the whole thing but I doubt Japanese market had that much of an impact to the final result. I might be completely wrong here since I'm not really that well informed about the whole format wars thing. I don't really care.
