Boards of Canada might incite rage in others, but I like their style; it sounds like they've managed to turn nostalgia into song. I listen to Daft Punk's "Harder Better Faster Stronger" an embarrassing amount of times a day.

On the contemporary rock scene I love Porcupine Tree, VAST, Tool, Tenacious D, and Pure Reason Revolution (maybe the most underrated band I've ever listened to).

Metal: Symphony X, Orphaned Land, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Nightwish, Apocalyptica, Stone Sour
