All I can really say is that this is really sad.  Not only is D&D HUGE, but I've read a few interviews from this guy and he always seemed like a really cool guy (and a really cool dad).  RIP man.

Also so this isn't a shit "nooo" or "who cares" topic, uh...share how D&D matters to you or something?

Man, this is really sad. This guy is basically the dude who *made* the tabletop RPG, since everything kickstarted from D&D. Add to the fact that Final Fantasy 1 based itself around D&D a lot (spell system, etc) to get sales in America, and this guy helped do quite a bit.

I've been an avid D&D player since I was like, 6, cause my dad was into it and got me into it as well. This is a sad day, and I hope the other greats hold out for much longer to continue the series.

RIP Gary...

edit:

heh....i guess....the grim reaper....rolled a 20....heh

Kind of thing you don't think about but it's weird when it happens. I couldn't care less about Dungeons and Dragons, but i guess it's kind of important, in its own way.

I did chuckle at the Troll Lord bit though.

Couldn't he get a cleric to cast a ressurection spell?

It is kinda sad but he was getting pretty old man.

No disrespect to the guy or anything but people really need to stop posting so many obituaries in the general forum. It's not particularly general nor is it entertaining in any way. I just find the whole thing kinda morbid.

There are very few of them, and especially not many in comparison to many topics.  A lot of people don't hear about deaths like this unless they hear about them on GW, I know I didn't hear of a lot of them from other places.  There really ISN'T a flood of them, so I don't see what's wrong.

Considering how many people die every day I'd say the number of such topics is relatively small.

I didn't really know much about the guy, but I do know that his original game pretty much spawned all of the small-party numbers-based RPGs that exist today, whether they're played with books and dice or on a computer. I think it's safe to say that without Gary's contribution to geek culture, sites like GW wouldn't exist at all.

coincidentally, i'm supposed to be playing my first D&D game tomorrow.  though i've never played, i understand a lot of the mechanics, and he is a pretty imaginative guy for inventing all of it.
keep posting...

It pisses me off how it was Wizards main goal to steal as much money from Gygax as possible.  Ever since the original 3.0, they tried their hardest to remove any mention of the original Greyhawk world so they wouldn't have to pay Gygax royalties.  Now with 4th edition coming out, Greyhawk and any mentioning has been completely removed and his family gets absolutely shit.

I hope he does rest in peace because if I created DnD I'd be rolling in my grave after seeing the changes they're doing to DnD.  It's more like WORLD OF DUNGEONCRAFT TABLETOP... BUT MOSTLY PLAYED ONLINE.

I just learned about him today. Really, D&D has always been a game I've always wanted to play. But I really don't have any cool nerd friends who enjoy this kinda stuff. It's a shame, I could've tried to get his autograph all this time.

He died too young...at age sixty-nine...

This is how I feel.  I understand how the game works and everything, and I know the basic rules, but I have NO ONE to play with.  At most I can get one other person interested but that's where it ends because we can't find anyone else.

Yeah, this is a real loss to the RPG world, and even more so to D&D fans. I mean, this man MADE RPG's as we know it, if not singlehandedly in a lot of ways. People who enjoy RPG's have a lot to owe him. So yeah, I salute him. And D&D is something I'd like to try as well, and there are a few people who play it here at college. I'll give it a shot one day.

This is like the only death this year that actually surprised me. I mean, he didn't seem that old and I never really thought about him being 69 years old.

Just one more level and he could've gotten the Sword of Smite + 20.

DND 2nd edition was my very first tabletop RPG, which I played when I was about 10 or so, with my parents and their friends. I'm a pretty big nerd about tabletop RPGs, and although I don't really like DND as much as I used to, I do appreciate what it was. Gary Gygax helped to create a great game that was loved by many people, and it's safe to say I probably wouldn't have found a lot of the stuff I enjoy now without it.

Rest in piece, man.

Also, OotS made a rather touching comic about this.

fixed

But  honestly, i never played dnd to much. A couple of friends and I played a couple games but never really had the time to get a weekly game going and it ended like that. That man was pretty creative to invent such complex game and im sure he will be missed by many.

Holy fuck! This completely took me by surprise. I enjoyed both your creations of D&D and Earthbound (aka Mother in Japan).

RIP Gigas.
