I know News topics aren't relatively new or even interesting to have in General, but I figured this was pretty groundbreaking. Also, this news is relatively old, but I don't think I've seen it mentioned here yet. Forgive me if it has.

This is pretty startling. I never considered Australia, of all places to have such limitations, but here it is. Will this hurt Australia's foreign relations at all, or perhaps have some sort of a slippery slope concerning freedom in Australia? What are your thoughts on this?

and that the “clean feed” would be opt-in, not opt-out. Today’s announcement by Telecommunications Minister Stephen Conroy states that the censorship regime will be mandatory, although people will be able to opt-out of it. The problem of course then becomes if you opt-out questions will be asked as to why you want out, which in itself may lead to Government monitoring.

...what?

man, people complain about censorship in america but whenever they do i always tell them to look up new zealand or australia.  fuck, for a country made up of criminals you guys have it ROUGH.

eventually the internet will be nothing more than educational materials and episodes of the Wiggles uploaded to Youtube.

And then even these, too, will be gone, like tears in rain, as the theocracy that will ultimately come to power will deem all technology blasphemous and destroy it all.

EDIT: fixed my forced Blade Runner reference

this is the first time i've seen a move of censorship by the australian government and not been surprised. it's because i think austrailia = whiteys rule. tanned whiteys, anyway. so i begin assuming that the way the country is run will be similar to european states. anyway, this time i didn't think that. anyway this is a bad thing and i hope someone manages to reverse it. i know very little about australia other than a vague idea of how the aborigonies have been treated and that the prime minister's name is kevin rudd, so i don't really have much to say. it's not the worst web censorship ever obviously but it still sucks

australia bans all kinds of stuff don't they? like, movies and games. it's weird, i don't get it. someone give me the low down.

so basically, your internet is censored unless you "opt-out", then you get normal internets?  doesnt sound too bad (yet), but it's a step in an oppressive direction.  its potentially good if you have kids, but it should definitely be an "opt-in" thing.

i prefer raw unfiltered internet myself.

new zealand doesn't have anything like this! in fact i think it's only recently the government acknowledged the existence of the internet.

this is pretty wacky because i'm pretty sure if you want porn in australia all you have to do is turn on a TV past 8pm

Yeah but if you opt out then it's an instant red flag for government monitoring.

Internet filtering should be left to the individual user.  The Aussie government should be educating people on ways to do this, not trying to regulate it themselves.

Being australian and a frequent internet user I can only say that this is like, piss old as far as news goes.
When they initially mentioned this about a year ago I was about as worried about it as I am now, it's just one of those things that won't fly seeings as most people are perfectly aware of the term 'user defined security' and even still if you choose to opt-out you're only going to get caught with porn that (as far as I'm concerned, being 18 and all), is perfectly legal to view.

As far as australia goes with its censorship and bans and what-have-you, it likes people to be AWARE that it is a secluded island disconnected from the rest of the world.

This action will come back to haunt them as the Internet dominates more and more of the economy. Free speech and free trade go hand in hand.

I'd just like to add on to what Climbtree said.
I've never heard of anything being banned in NZ, I'm sure there's something, but nothing I've heard of. In general we tend to have lower age ratings on movies and such than other countries do, and it was only recently that stores even asked for ID when buying R16 things.

I think there's two video games, postal 2 and manhunt

this is really weird because i've always viewed australia as having really slack standards towards censorship

Australia doesn't really censor a lot of things, but we have made some primo government-level fuck ups in our short life span. This is shaping up to be another one, I think.

Does this mean GW would be blocked?  Probably considering HATE SPEECH counts (Australia just doesn't understand the fine workings of GW)

Australia have a reputation over here as pretty big censor guys still. Like in the 70's they'd episodes of Doctor Who from the 60s because they deemed it too violent. But yeah I've read tonnes of shit about this the past like year but nothing seems to progress.
