I apologize if this has been posted somewhere before or if this forum's not the right place to post these kind of "tricks".

I'm guessing a lot of people already are aware of the fact that you can change your personal settings to adjust the quality of the videos. Did you know, however, that by simply adding this little line at the end of the url, you'll be able to crank up the quality? "&fmt=18"

This is an ordinary link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsiQO3hO3pc

This has better quality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsiQO3hO3pc&fmt=18

Do note that the version with better quality will load slower.

Update!4/9/08

"YouTube announced in November that they would be testing out encoding videos at higher resolutions (and with higher-quality audio encoding). Now it appears that a small sampling of uploaded videos can already be seen at their higher resolutions, simply by adding a little tag to the end of the video's URL. To get a (slightly noticeable) bump in resolution, try adding &fmt=6 to the end of the address line. The trick, according to YouTube watchers, seems to work primarily with newer videos, and bumps the resolution from 320x240 to 448x336. Add &fmt=18 to the end of the URL, and you might get an MP4-encoded version, with better audio and a 480x360 resolution"

If "&fmt=18" doesn't work for you, try using "&fmt=6". Some users has reported that this improved the quality, when "&fmt=18" didn't work for them.

I'll try to find out what's causing these codes to work diffrently from user to user.

Also, this "trick" only works where there is a video of higher quality available. So you won't see a difference in every video on youtube. Newer videos usually has a version with better quality available, though.

@Swordfish: Glad I could help! Thanks for the cookie btw :)

@Jeff: Why don't you try some different videos? Some videos, especially the featured videos are at a higher quality by default, though. If you're refering to the videos I posted, try reading the text. It's near impossible to make out what it says in the poor quality one.

Wow thats awesome, thanks for the tip. Didn't know about the video quality setting in account options, either!

BTW for people who can't tell the diff, the grass, trees, and character's faces are most noticably sharper in the "higher quality" vid.
It's not like HD or anything, but it is noticably sharper. No doubt from using less compression.

Only reason I would think they'd hide this is so people who have computers/mobile devices that barely run youtube vids now, would choke under the extra CPU load.

And hey, this looks like a fun game. I'm definitely going to keep my eye on it.

Downloaded videos will still surpass youtube's aggressive compression and low resolution restrictions a vast majority of the time.
Watch the same vids on youtube,  and even with high quality mode it will still look much worse than whatever you downloaded.

Must look like absolute crap if it's worse than youtube. I didn't think any downloadable video these days outside real player was THAT bad.

edit: &fmt=6 looks worse than &fmt=18
edit edit: swordfish, if a video doesn't load, just keep hitting refresh and it'll usually load up.

No offense, but you have to be pretty blind not to notice the difference (at least in the two videos I just watched)!

Thanks, this is pretty cool.

What's with the bad gradients in the picture, you in 16 bit color mode?

Maybe it's not compatible with everyones hardware.

Hell no, I converted the screenshot cuz it's s o big already. But I guess it's not a good idea when trying to prove something that would depend on the appearance of the pic..

So I uploaded screenshots again, now with the real colors.. But the videos are no different from each other.

Interesting tidbit, I played a video I uploaded without &fmt=18, and pressing the "original size" button shrunk it to the youtube standard. When I added &fmt=18 to the link, the video was in a higher resolution. Pressing the "original size" button had no effect, so I would assume that youtube is using the full 480x360 of the video window instead of the standard 320x240 size limit. I uploaded some of these videos at 640x480 so youtube was able to use a higher resolution. Also sound quality was increased. Try it with these vids.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=YygFXA-YExg  ->  http://youtube.com/watch?v=YygFXA-YExg&fmt=18
http://youtube.com/watch?v=VrPnLy640uE   ->  http://youtube.com/watch?v=VrPnLy640uE&fmt=18
http://youtube.com/watch?v=yrSL-Dat3-0   ->  http://youtube.com/watch?v=yrSL-Dat3-0&fmt=18

Notice the higher resolution, and crisper sounding audio.

edit: some videos sync better now

I hate to double post, but this is very useful information and might even help out hero bash (and is pretty neat to know anyhow):

"YouTube announced in November that they would be testing out encoding videos at higher resolutions (and with higher-quality audio encoding). Now it appears that a small sampling of uploaded videos can already be seen at their higher resolutions, simply by adding a little tag to the end of the video's URL. To get a (slightly noticeable) bump in resolution, try adding &fmt=6 to the end of the address line. The trick, according to YouTube watchers, seems to work primarily with newer videos, and bumps the resolution from 320x240 to 448x336. Add &fmt=18 to the end of the URL, and you might get an MP4-encoded version, with better audio and a 480x360 resolution"

maybe you need to install/resinstall mp4 codec? or maybe you have an incompatible one?
