My computer is on the edge here. I think someone has hacked my computer some how. I have a load of problems. I suspect a virus has caused this, because earlier this week I downloaded something and Avast Anti-Virus Professional found 7 or 8 trojan horses and malware.
Here is my problems:

1. Task Manager disabled:
When I press CTRL ALT DELETE or go down to the task bar and right click and select task manager, it says it was disabled by the administrator, and I am the administrator. The only other account on this computer is the guest account. This is so screwed!!!! :fogetcry:

2. "Black Screen Clicks" as I call th***em:
Sometimes when I click stuff, my screen goes black for a second, and then it returns and my icons on my desktop reload, and the thing I clicked doesn't come up.

3. Tab Pop-ups:
When I am surfing the web, Some popup ads come up, but they are not normal pop-ups, they open a new tab instead. As you can see up in the error above, where it shows the "***", one of these Tab Pop-ups happened while I was typing that very word. Is some kind of adware or something in my PC?

4. I am unable to do virus scans:
I can't do virus scans, When I delete the infections at the end of a scan, it only deletes 3 or 4 then some weird code error message comes up. Or if it doesn't do that, I can delete them, but it does no good to my problems. HELP ME PLEASE!

I've never encountered these problems, so my best solution to you is to reinstall Windows.
Honestly, I wouldn't even go through the trouble of trying to fix all that. So just reinstall.

If you can boot into safe mode, you should be able to launch task manager and see what applications are executing.  Note anything out of place, and then do a search on them.  This should allow you to identify the viruses on your machine.  Once identified, you can research removal techniques.

Of course, the easy way out is to reformat and reinstall.  Have fun!

Your pc can never die as a whole. At worst you'd have to reformat your HDs if you where hacked... but in most cases using a boot CD to load up dos to run any sort of antivirus/ diagnostic utility to clean your PC should do the trick if it comes down to it.

I never had to do this myself (because I know what I'm doing hohohoho) so don't count on me to provide any actual help. Just don't throw the computer away or anything silly like that.

My parents once got a similar virus.  The easy solution is to just reformat/reinstall.  The actual removal method is long and annoying.  In short, you will need to disconnect yourself from the internet (remove ethernet cord/whatever), and boot into safe mode.  Once in safe mode there will be some files that you have to find and delete.  This is the annoying part because I forget exactly how I determined which files needed to be removed.  I wish I could be of more help, but I forget the actual name of the virus and where I found what files to remove.

I'm just rambling, just take the easy way out and reinstall Windows.

You will lose everything. That is the nature of a format.

If you want to back files up... try safe mode, dos, or installing another instance of windows on the same hd/ partition and copying things over to a cd/dvd/another hd (external or otherwise) /flash drive/ etc before you ultimately format the drive.

If you reinstall, you will not lose anything outside your operating system files. You will keep all your other documents and programs, but some of those programs will need to be reinstalled.

If you reformat, you will lose all the data on the drive, but that won't matter if you have another drive or media to backup with. It's just very inconvenient to have to back up everything when it's mostly the OS files that are troubled.

Reinstalling windows will most likely fix the problem though, and you can avoid having any old infected files by reinstalling EVERY program, not just the ones that don't work with the reinstall.

All files located in folders created by Windows will be lost, including your desktop content. The best thing to do is to back up everything you'd consider important before formatting.

Not true. Windows XP install leaves your old user account data in the "documents and settings" directory, including your desktop files. Windows install only replace genuine OS files. It has no reason to delete any of your programs or files. In fact the only reason some of your programs won't work is because the OS lost the associated data for it, like its registry entries from installation. If you want ABSOLUTELY everything in your "documents and settings" folder to stay intact, just rename the directory before you begin to reinstall.

Best bet is to copy all the things that you wanna keep to an external or another partition and format your windows one.

The only time anything is allowed to stay in XP is when you choose ¨Safe System Restore¨, I believe. ¨Destructive System Restore¨ has always completely wiped my harddrive and reinstalled MOST of the vital parts of XP, but... I had an OEM version.

Your pc can never die as a whole.

Unless you have a really cheap PSU that decides to go. XD
Wait... some things might not short. :X

You just lost the game.

One time in my computer everything shorted but the RAM, which is like the most sensitive piece of hardware ever.

Although it's dead now, it just took it about a year to finally give in.

Scroll up, we're talking about installation, not system restore, which would be a VERY bad idea for fixing a virus.

So if I reinstall windows, basically everything will still be there, right? Just the system files and such will be replaced with new ones or whatever. correct?

N00b Question:
Will my same icons still be on the desktop after a reinstall of windows?

No. They said only things in Document and Settings would still be there. Anything outside of it wouldn't.

Noone said that.... not that it makes any sense at all.

All of your desktop stuff will be in the old desktop folder.... assuming you renamed your PC during the installation... giving you a new set of documents and settings folder under the new name.

For me it went like this.

Old shit here: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop

New shit here: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.I-SEE-YOU\Desktop

As far as installing windows on the same partition... I booted from the CD to do it (not sure if you could have otherwise) and it asked me to name my windows folder. It installed everything into the new folder and all I had to do was copy the dlls and shit from the old system32 folders and put them in the new one.... making everything very easy to install again.

Avast Professional did a bootup scan, so everthing is back to normal except task manager, It always says task manager is disabled by administrator!

No. I said everything NOT a file needed by the OS, and thus overwritten by the installation, would still be there. Almost the opposite of what you said, everything outside "C:\Document and Settings" and "C:\Windows" will stay EXACTLY as is, minus a few files in the root of the OS drive.
