I've got a Netgear WGR614v6 router right now, and the thing is a piece of crap.  It locks up and stops routing if too many connections are opened up.  When I go to sleep at night and leave BitTorrent running (only one computer on my network) it basically craps out.  If I play Call of Duty IV or Smash Bros Brawl, it'll shutdown after a while.  Apparently, some people have been saying that it's faulty hardware and I've had the device for about 9 months -- so there's no real chance of RMA/warranty, which kind of sucks -- I only realized the complications now.

In any case, I need a new Router.  Preferably with all standard features, and something that will NOT crap out if it opens several connections.  I was hoping to get a Buffalo, since I've been reading that those are actually fantastic routers, but unfortunately, they are no longer manufacturing/selling them for legal reasons.  Linksys used to be decent, but I've heard some stories about them sucking lately.  So the good ol' Netgear and Linksys names seem a lot cheaper and shittier now.

Is there any brand/model that'd be worth buying? (I may head out to a Fry's Electronics this weekend and grab one)

I use a Netgear WGR614 v7.  This was a replacement for an old Linksys 802.11G router I was using.  the Linksys router constantly dropped the wireless connection, and the wired connection was only slightly better.  The Netgear router I'm using has been running full tilt for nearly a year now without anything so much as a hiccup, even when downloading torrents on one machine while another machine browses the web.

I have one desktop wired into it, one wireless desktop, and three wireless laptops.  Two Wiis, five Nintendo DS systems, and two PSPs.  Even with most of these systems up and doing something on the internet, the router still runs strong.

I don't know how much of a difference the v7 would make over the v6, but if my network is any indication, quite a bit.

If you're looking to upgrade, I would suggest a wireless G MIMO router.  The speed and range is about as good as wireless N, but you won't be as likely to have the interference the wireless N routers have a tendency to receive, as wireless G has a lot more channels to pick from than wireless N.

Dual band wireless N routers are supposed to be better where the interference is concerned, but I haven't tested them yet.

That's incredible that the v7 and v6 would make so much difference.  Yeah, if I'm running just a few systems, PS3, Wii, and 2 Laptops, the thing goes crazy.  It seems like only a time with high network activity...

Do you have the latest firmware? Have you limited maximum connections in your bittorrent client?

personally myself i own a cisco 1800 series. the best router i have ever used. not recommended unless you know a little bit about ios. you have to telnet into it on initial setup. anyway it's been up for 4 months straight. not a single crash or hang up. I work for a ISP so i got a great deal on it. but as for your problem first before trashing the router check for firmware updates. the company i work for does FTTH. fiber to the home and we install cheap 4 port dlink routers inside the house. we have  had so many problems and service calls due to those routers 2 years ago, UNTIL dlink updated the firmware. now they work very well. unfortunately for us someone in ordering department thought they were to expensive and we switched routers. we now use intellinet routers. and they are god awful. those things have to be the worst router i have ever used. you get the thing configured and 5 mins later it crashes. reboot. up for 10 mins then crashes. reboot again could crash in another 10 mins or stay up for 5 hours. So On some sites they switched to linksys 4 port box routers. they look like the 4 port dlink switches. grey metal case and those work really well. it's something like RV042.

I've updated the firmware.  They haven't released anything for almost a year now.  It's a known issue.

I'd love to get an uber Cisco router -- I used to be CCNA certified, but I'm not about to drop $500 on a router.  I think I could get something reasonable from a smaller vendor for my apartment for $100 at most.

I love my wrt54g, works fine for several systems, wired and unwired, for gaming and torrenting. Was a bit unstable at first, but updating to the newest firmware fixed that right up. For 70$ it was well worth my money.

Cool, I've been looking at this router.  So it's good, eh?  Maybe I'll make a purchase this weekend.  Wheee.

My recommendation would be the Vigor 2820Vn ... seems pretty reliable to me, though possibly a bit expensive. I originally chose it mainly because its easy to set up sane QoS rules (like allowing my machines to set higher priority, but not my housemates). Or if you want something cheaper, I suspect the ones without all the fancy features will still be good quality.

I also have a WRT54G. Main computer, as many as 2-8 laptops (people come over), PS3 and Wii all hooked up nice and no problems thus far.
Yay! Random words!
