I am looking to buy a laptop to replace my desktop (temporarily, but i will get a desktop later on) and current laptop. I'm looking for something like this:

15.4"
2+ghz dualcore
2 gb of ram
a DX10 video card
160gb+ hdd

I want to make a good purchase so I am putting time into this, seeing what I can find out. I'm not sure what brand to go with, or whether to go AMD or Intel.

I will be using this laptop to it's capabilities, to play stuff like Age of Conan when it comes out and other games of the sort, as well as applications such as 3ds max, flash and photoshop. I'm in Canada, so a Canadian store would be awesome if you are going to do direct links. As of now I can't think if anything I'm missing, so go go go!

Here is one laptop that I currently have in mind:

Acer is getting better with their laptops. I like them a lot better than Toshiba or Sony.
That laptop is pretty expensive though! I found something with better specs, and a cheaper price for you.

http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=10140ST1433&vpn=LX.AN40X.837&manufacture=ACER#specifications
It has a faster processor(1.83ghz compared to 1.5ghz) with pretty much the exact same specs as the last one excluding the HD-DVD. That website doesn't seem to have the full specs, but it's a perfectly good website to buy from.
http://www.ncixus.com/products/index.php?sku=28449
That website has the full specifications, but don't buy it from there since it's US only.

Also, Intel is the better brand to go with for laptops especially. From all the benchmarks I've seen, Intel powered laptops seem to run much faster than an AMD powered one.

I highly suggest the 8800M for the video card if you not only want to be able to run DX10 games, but run them well.

I suggest you ignore the ram and HDD on ones that meet your screen size, cpu, and video card needs. You can upgrade ram and HDD on most laptops.

Yeah one thing I didn't notice about the one I linked is the 1.5ghz processor, which I wouldn't mind being faster. Wouldnt it be more expensive to buy a new harddrive and ram then just get it with the laptop itself?

Goat, do you have any specific laptup suggestions? I'm still thinking about the acer, but i want to see what else there is

Edit:

Okay wrong link, Canada Computers website is messed up. THis laptop is better and cheaper.

This is something a bit more what I was looking for.

It would probably be better to get a desktop computer now and a laptop later.  Desktop computers are cheaper and easier to upgrade.  I don't know if price is a factor for you or not, but most people don't use a laptop to play games.  You can...but you normally get better performance from a desktop because you can get more powerful video cards and stuff in there without the risk of overheating as much of a threat.

Do you plan on taking it places or just having it as a permanent desktop replacement?  How long will it be before you can get another computer?  Laptops are meant to be durable, but they don't last as long compared to desktop computers.

What I would recommend:
Intel Core 2 Duo processor
250GB Hard drive
Video Card that supports DirectX 10 with at least a 256MB cache
DVD R/RW
2GB of RAM

If you get a desktop computer, you also might want to make sure it has DVI out and a monitor that supports DVI.  At least a 1280x1024 resolution as well.

Know, trust me, I know all of this. I'm buying a desktop now and a laptop later. I have more use for a laptop than a desktop, seeing as I have a gaming capable desktop right now and a decent laptop. I'm selling those now, getting a nice laptop, for work school and home. Desktop will come later as I can get that for much cheaper but in the meantime I am looking to get a good upgrade on something thats is mobile. Please don't suggest otherwise because I've already thoguht about this and it is swerving off topic.

This is pretty dumb imo, seeing as I doubt anybody checks this topic regularly and it's not like this has anything to do with building a computer. I'm talking about purchasing a laptop, and looking for specific brands and what people recomend.

By the way, next time please PM me so I don't wonder around for 5 minutes wandering around looking for my topic.

Also this topic seems much more like a guide itself, than actual getting help upgrading. Like, what each part is for and how it will affect you. Could you please edit the first post or topic title letting others know the nature of the topic itself?

The problem is that these topics are stupid and for the most part are just a few posts going back and forth, and sometimes it'll turn into a flamewar about mac/win/linux or something stupid. At least this way you can just drop in and say "parts a/b/c/d/e for programs a/b/c/d??" or whatever and people are like "ohhh ya" or whatever, and thats it. I dunno I think it'd be good. We're doing it this way I'm sorry.

If your question is on the nature of building a computer or the nature of gpu/chipset compatibility then by all means, make a separate topic. If you are upgrading/getting a new computer (buying a new computer counts as upgrading dude) then post here.

I will definitely PM you next time. :fogetcool:

You might want to read the first post. It's all talking about UPGRADING YOURSELF. These are what THESE parts do, this is how you put them together. I'm saying update this topic with a clear purpose, as it just seems like an informational thread, and then I will be content. Otherwise I'll just wait a couple days, assume there is no attention being gained here, and post it back where it was, so I can actually get some results.

We're trying to make it more informative, but it's a work in progress ;_;
I think half of it is that most the people who normally reply to those topics probably aren't checking this sticky often...

Yeah, that's exactly what the problem is I think. I would have never checked this topic, where I normally would have checked the topic by itself. It's a great topic, it gives computer newbies a great place to start and let them know what they are looking for. And that's all I thought it was. I thought it was just an information thread. Not a request thread itself. Which should be posted in the topic.

If you are looking for specific parts or specific questions, then post here. Otherwise people will just ignore it. It's also going to be semi confusing if you use it for that. As posts get mixed together. Who's helping who, who has what needs. I'm looking for a laptop on the more expensive side, and seeking specific brand and computer information. I don't really think help threads should go in here, seeing as this forum doesn't gain that much traffic anyways, it can spare a few topics outside a sticky. I noticed since my topic has moved it's gotten no help, and I really wish it wasn't moved because now my help has been delayed. If I haven't gotten anything by tommorow I'm reposting my topic.

UH ok i guess you are right, your topic is a little too specific to be "lumped" into the sticky.
