I went to this bizarre grocery store called ALDI today.

http://www.aldifoods.com/index_ENU_HTML.htm

they charged you 25 cents for a cart and a dollar for a bag if you didn't bring one and had no one to help you bag or anything. there were no counters with prices, just like FOOD PALETTES and signs above them with prices. there was no music piping in and while everything was painted and it had a REAL CEILING the entire thing was like a tiered down Sam's Club. everything was cheaper too and they had all sorts of off brand shit. and wheat bread for a 1.19!

they carried REALLY LIMITED stuff though. it was weird, it was like someone filled out a budget ONE DORITO KNOCKOFF ONE SHRIMP COMPANY ONE 2% MILK. and they had no vegetables that weren't canned (possibly there were some frozen ones I couldn't see).

basically what a bizarre place, have you guys been here?

The UK is packed full of synonymous places:

e.g. ALDI, Lidl, Netto

All scandinavian for value!

We've got these by us, they're a novel idea but it's only a step better than getting your food from the food pantry.

The only reason I'd shop here is stock up for another cold war nuclear scare or something comparable. Some of them have meat and produce, but by purchasing it you're, more or less, intentionally contracting salmonella or food poisoning.

Of the lot, Aldi is actually pretty awesome. Wheras Netto (UK stores: Europe mainland Nettos are actually alright) is utter shit and Lidl is for pikeys, Aldi do loads of continental stuff and top spec laptops for £200. Try their "fake brands" as they aren't bad- the only shitty think I've ever found there is bread and milk. Scandinavians must feed their cows car exhausts for it to have that flavour.

I'm living off it as a student.

My parents bought a new car then claimed that they have no money anymore so we had this loooooong spree of eating lidl food. After you get used to that you sure appreciate expensive food afterwards.

yeah they're really cheap but you can get the foulest tasting most nastiest gummy from them (I hear one is moving across the road from my worl, which is great as next door to us is a lidl... aldi's ARCH NEMESIS) We get really weird european foods from them for like 1/4 the price of normal brand foods yet they taste as good.

We did end up getting a lot of rough customers at our store though due to the kind of people who mostly shop at lidl

uhhhh yeah man we've got these like every five miles in northeastern ohio.  they don't have the best selection and so if i want ACTUAL SHIT when i go grocery shopping i go to a proper grocery store, but like you said they're mad mad fucking cheap so if i am looking to SCRIMP or not in the mood to overpay for groceries, or i just don't really need anything fancier than FRUITY-Os, i try to go there!

in a way it's too bad the place is so cheap, though, as it means that with limited funds they don't really hire a lot of people to look after the place (i've never seen more than three people working in an aldi at any given point in time ever) and being a bargain grocery store, they obviously attract a lower economic class of people and the result is every time i go into one shit's just strewn all over the place.

how did I create a topic for BRITISH GW MEMBERS!!!

but yeah even in Cary (voted the most suburban place in America by National Geographic) where they tried to make it look nice, it just seemed weird. it was so empty and there was one register open and then it took a line of like ten people for them to open the other and they did it so slowly. there were only three people there.

man it was so weird! I've never seen one before and I've lived in both high and low rent places before.

There's a similar type of store nearby called "Price-Rite" where you also pay 25 cents for shopping cart and bags are 15c. We're poor so my parents always shop there cause everything is cheaper. They have fresh produce, though!

however i am deathly afraid of blacks and hispanics so i stay away

Aldi's Rocks... I can get a full months worth of groceries for about 200 bucks...  But their selection is very limited, and most of what they have is generic knock off...

yeah and meat and poultry right?  i was just telling him i preferred save a lot to aldi because SAME CONCEPT but with fruits and vegetables and other shit aldi neglects to stock.  it's good that it's cheap as fuck but honestly i've spent so long shopping at whole foods and trader joe's because i don't really have a budget that i have a difficult time acclimating my tastes to a lot of the shit they sell there.  i think i really only like it for basic stuff like bread and cereal and milk and whatever else.  if i want whatever else people buy at grocery stores like frozen pizza or something, i always feel like i am getting a lesser product when i buy their 79c variant as opposed to whatever $6 option a nicer store would have, but it's really nice that it exists for people living on tight budget constraints!  i'm sure if i was POORSTUDENT and didn't feel like spending six fucking dollars on a frozen pizza i would appreciate a 79c one.

...you guys know it has nothing to do with laziness or anything FUCKIN AMERICANS because you're giving off that vibe.

it's actually not a bad thing at all, it provides high school students and other people very easy jobs for one. maybe the supermarket isn't as prevalent in europe but down here it is and it's nice not to have to bag 30+ groceries, so people get more groceries since they don't have bag them all up themself (which is an irritating process to do when you have a lot of shit) and the company makes more profit.

Hey this topic is now about strange jobs in the USA.

Next up: What do you call people that fill your gas tanks?

Do you have people that clear your windows in traffic lights?

edit:

in all seriousness though doesnt bagboy and gasfillers as a job show how weak the economy is?

I remember when I was in Africa there would be people doing those jobs (I never went to a grocery store in africa tho so i never encountered the bagboy) and its generally a sign of labour being way too cheap and way too available (correct me if im wrong??).

usa is such a third world country in disguise....!!
