MGMT and Black Kids are 'catchy' American ones right now. Cribs' latest album is actually a pretty good simple British guitar band and Blood Red Shoes have this nice duo interaction going on (also the woman is fucking gorgeous).

Props for mentioning Final Fantasy. He is absolutely BRILLIANT. I'm pretty sure he composed like, 3 opera's by the time he was 18 or something like that. I love his music. <3

Isn't it Owen Pallett in Final Fantasy? He's one half of Arcade Fires' string section.

meta sal dali more like shut up

I am throwing The Rapture in the mix, because with !!! they did the dance-rock thing before it was suddenly 'new' and trendy, and people like Franz Ferdinand got in on the act. They also did it much better than the latter.

I agree that this topic feels like a bunch of aquaintances at a party trying too hard to strike up a conversation, with various people joining in and calling from across the room to show off their music knowledge so they can leave with the cute twink listening to Andrew Bird.  I'm no forum veteran, but it seems  like it woudl be a good idea to focus upon a more centralised sound.

yeah but the only reason that happened is because most of GW doesn't know hiphop so it ended up being sadly exclusive
I don't know why you think this, if you take a look I believe there were actually more different people posting in the hip-hop topic than in this one, even though it did come across as a circle-jerk.  People here seem to know far more about hip-hop than anyone /I/ know.

I have to admit, the whole 'sensitive quirky chamber-pop' thing
Not to mention this sentence really gets on my nerves.  I haven't an idea what you mean,  could you please rephrase it without using the hip musicblog speak?  And then someone wrote a reply starting with whilst, I'm from the UK and I don't even 'type' that way.  Good grief.

I'm not sure what "hip musicblog speak" is, but...
'Sensitive' means that a good many indie songs have lyrics that emphasise how emotionally vulnerable and stuff they are, almost to the point of parody ("I always knew you'd be the one to show me a grove to lie in and cry into the treetops" - lyric from a random Stars song that manages to be both twee, obtuse, and whiny all at once).
'Quirky' means that there's a trend for bands to be as self-conciously WACKY and ZANY as possible, usually by writing songs about shit like stamp-collecting and punctuation, having high-pitched, 'geeky' or neurotic vocals, and generally sounding like a third rate Talking Heads ripoff. Los Campesinos are a good example of 'quirky' music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj6SO_yKMe8 . And they suck balls. A lot of the time, quirky is the same as twee, which overlaps a lot with sensitive, so it's not as contradictory as it sounds.
'Chamber-Pop' is basically pop music with orchestral-type instruments, like violins and glockenspiels and shit. The Arcade Fire are chamber-pop.

Also, relax already. Just because someone uses fucking apostrophes or words like 'whilst' doesn't mean they're a pretentious dick. And I can't speak for anyone else here, but I'm pretty sure the reason people namecheck bands and stuff is because they LIKE those bands and want other people to check them out, not because they want to impress anybody.

actually whilst is kind of fucking awful.

also hey fuck you i like the new Los Campesinos a lot and that song in particular.

also the problem with these threads isn't that people are trying to impress each other but more that certain people view them as excuses to be like "oh you forgot this, this, and this, and this" and rarely is anyone talking to each other and instead talk at each other!

I can't stand them at all... They're so chirpy and zany and shouty and relentlessly upbeat, it just grates on me horribly. I mean, I'm not against happy music, but there's a fairly low limit to the amount of hyperactive cheerfulness I can take in one song.

But yeah, this thread is pretty much just people randomly flinging names out, probably just because 'indie music' is so vague... I mean, fucking Foals and the Dismemberment Plan are here, and they're nothing alike musically. If it was like 'Canadian indie post-2004' or whatever then there'd probably be more actual discussion and stuff (and it's not like you'd run out of bands then either).

EDIT: Shit, I was thinking of the Dillinger Escape Plan instead of the Dismemberment Plan. Foals and the Libertines, then.

I think its kind of shit how people are allowed to just come in here and say how indie is shit, but that wouldn't fly in a topic about rap or something :/

kaworu is drunk, that's the excuse.

the rest are either kidding or talking about subgenre stuff.

that aaaand while I'm sure someone will take issue with this, indie is still a subgenre of rock. a HUGE fucking subgenre, but one still. hiphop on the other hand has a lot of stuff under the umbrella so to me saying RAP IS SHIT is like saying ROCK IS SHIT in that I think you're discounting a lot of stuff based on ignorance and not because you've given it even close to a fair shot.

well steel, I feel that indie is so much more than just a sub-genre of rock music, there are indie artists in every music. indie hip hop, indie rock, indie electronica or something. I actually wouldn't call indie a genre or anything, it is just a way to classify the independents out there.

ahahhaah no one seriously does this anymore dude. pretty sure the Arcade Fire are independent of nothing. many indie bands are under a major label.

indie means a specific type of music (PAVEMENT is actually a band that epitomizes it). I'm saying there are subgenres in that sound (chamber pop was brought up) but that it's more valid someone might dislike everything in that particular music subset than a much wider genre that hits more themes and more musical trends.

who would ever take issue with someone saying indie is a subgenre of rock and why?  i think 99% of the time unless you add something after it like INDIE HIP HOP it is used interchangeably with indie rock sooooo

also this topic is kinda gay because i don't really see anyone DISCUSSING MUSIC or sharing thoughts so much as just talking about random indie bands they like which is pretty boring tbh
