ahahhaah no one seriously does this anymore dude. pretty sure the Arcade Fire are independent of nothing. many indie bands are under a major label.

indie means a specific type of music (PAVEMENT is actually a band that epitomizes it). I'm saying there are subgenres in that sound (chamber pop was brought up) but that it's more valid someone might dislike everything in that particular music subset than a much wider genre that hits more themes and more musical trends.

that is like a double negative or something. indie bands can't be on major labels, it defeats the purpose of being indie and doing their own thang.

but yah, I can kind of see what you mean, a lot of indie bands are just more commercialized than they ever intended or something. ex. belle and sebastian songs in the background of vh1 shows, iron and wine on m&m's commercial, the shins everywhere,  modest mouse......., and whoever else.

the indie genre is about as dead as the punk imo.

yeah i don't think he was saying that no indie bands could be on anything but major labels.  more like, a lot of bands that have the quintessentially indie sounds/styles aren't.  and yeah there are a lot of indie sounds/styles at this point but i don't really think anyone thinks of it as indie/major record labels more than they think of them as having a certain type of sound at this point.  maybe it'd be more accurate to call indie rock that's not actually signed to independent labels ALT ROCK but at that point you're really just splitting hairs.

I am giving on genre's forever. there are too many, and some really ridiculous ones.

fuck:

math rock
indie rock
drone rock
stoner rock
christian hardcore
progressive rock
all metal music (I don't even want to start that)
etc etc etc

it is music

but, I do agree on the alternative rock labeling, that is what a lot of major labels and things like mtv classify the bands with indie rock sound as.

The Knife is the only indie thing worth listening to ever
The Knife is very good, very visual music.  Sweden has quite a few good indie gigs, many of them centered around The Knife and their label, Rabid Records (we could easily have a topic on just that).  After hearing their stuff, Robyn ditched Jive and started her own Konichiwa Records and it resulted in what is probably her best album to date.  I believe the Knife produced at least part of the album (titled 'Robyn') as well.  On Rabid, Honey is Cool is also worth listening to (features vocals by the female half of the Knife), and maybe some Jenny Wilson as well.

I'm not sure what "hip musicblog speak" is, but...
'Sensitive' means that a good many indie songs have lyrics that emphasise how emotionally vulnerable and stuff they are, almost to the point of parody ("I always knew you'd be the one to show me a grove to lie in and cry into the treetops" - lyric from a random Stars song that manages to be both twee, obtuse, and whiny all at once).
'Quirky' means that there's a trend for bands to be as self-conciously WACKY and ZANY as possible, usually by writing songs about shit like stamp-collecting and punctuation, having high-pitched, 'geeky' or neurotic vocals, and generally sounding like a third rate Talking Heads ripoff. Los Campesinos are a good example of 'quirky' music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj6SO_yKMe8 . And they suck balls. A lot of the time, quirky is the same as twee, which overlaps a lot with sensitive, so it's not as contradictory as it sounds.
'Chamber-Pop' is basically pop music with orchestral-type instruments, like violins and glockenspiels and shit. The Arcade Fire are chamber-pop.

Also, relax already. Just because someone uses fucking apostrophes or words like 'whilst' doesn't mean they're a pretentious dick. And I can't speak for anyone else here, but I'm pretty sure the reason people namecheck bands and stuff is because they LIKE those bands and want other people to check them out, not because they want to impress anybody.
Oh my.  I'm sorry, I suppose I was a bit rude, but I didn't expect such a response...  in any case, thank you for explaining, it does make sense now.

You must realise how obtrusive and unwieldy that onoriginal statement was, however.  Although chamber-pop is apparently an actual term, it's not exactly a household word.  Hence 'music blog' - often written by people who care overly much about /their/ opinions of music.  I understand the sensitivity part as well, though it personally only bothers me if it comes across as insincere.  What still bothers me is how you refer to so many things as being 'quirky', 'zany' and 'wacky'.  It seems like a rationalisation of something in music you simply do not like, mashing it into the mold of an objective, judgeable trait.  Not only does this come across as obtrusive and confusing to a reader, but also very pretentious and possibly as grating as the music you're trying to describe (though I do like the recent Los Campesinos album!).

yeah, it sucks that technically calling it "indie music" is wrong.... what would be the correct name, alternative? that just reminds me of like... pop-punk bands or soemthing. solutions anyone?

also, those have been some awesome bands mentioned... maybe i'll add a few more.

The Faint
Very electronic, dancy-rock sound. Loud and lively. A very modern look and feel. Probably not for everyone, but for those you like that kinda thing they're amazing.
(Glass dance, Drop kick the punks)

Death From Above 1979
Two guys who sounds like elephants. Very heavy rock with amazing drumming. Definately worth checking out.
('Romantic Rights', 'You're a Woman, I'm a machine')

CSS
A really fun band from South America. Female singer. Really fun and kinda weird.
('Lets make love and listen to death from above', 'music is my hot hot sex')

Ratatat
Their music sounds like it should be for rap or something, but there's no lyrics and some of the beats are a little electronic-y
('seventeen', 'crips')

Ladytron
Very mellow electronic sound. Female singers.
('Blue Jeans', 'this is our sound')

sorry- no youtube links :\

I'm not going to define indie music or what ever is going on. But get into Owen if you haven't already. Mike Kinsella is the guy's real name and he will suck you in with his music.  He was in bands like Joan of Arc, American Football, and Cap n' Jazz. It's just a voice and an acoustic guitar.

Nononono. Don't listen to Owen until you've listened to everything put out from American Football, Cap'n Jazz, AND Joan Of Arc.
