Most Americans aren't religious, they just claim to be to keep up appearances.
Well, I didn't mean it as in the "Go to church every Sunday, pray often" sort of bunch. Now, take into mind that I'm not antagonizing every American. Also, I realize that there are more religous countries out there(Nigeria is the most religous country in the world.) Though, it's a bit disturbing how little people tend to accept scientific fact as an inherent part to understanding our universe, and how it's an integral part to the human reasoning of our existance. I haven't met many people that accept religion in it's quintessential form, and the Bible verbatim, but they are certainly out there. It's been pretty much proven that the United States accepts evolution much less than other countries. It's one thing to believe it, and quite another to shove it down someones throat(which I've seen plenty of.) I think I see the worst side of the spectrum living in the bible belt.

Being more religious would imply reading the Bible, going to Church, following what the Bible says. Americans do not do this. They are not religious, they do not adhere to the religion, but they say they do. I live in one of the most conservative, "religious" areas of the US, so I know how these supposedly "religious" people behave. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I'm out drinking at a bar with you on Saturday night and you end up having the premarital relations with a hot (gender or species you feel sexual attraction to), and I know for a fact that you haven't been to church in 7 years and you don't own a Bible, but you say in a survey that you consider yourself a very religious Southern Baptist, I know you're full of shit. Most Americans are full of shit.

But you see, that's what America's all about: Saying one thing while doing the other.
(OH GOD I AM A SOUTH PARK REPUBLICAN HOW DID THIS HAPPEN???)

most people are full of shit. I lived in mexico and now i am living in the US, and yes mexico is extremely catholic but even there humans are hypocrits not dickless flying cherubs. So yeah, it doesnt matter if they dont read the bible, what matters is how faitfhful they are, not if they are SINLESS MACHINES OF RELIGIOSITY.

Here is some evidence:
http://pewglobal.org/reports/display.php?ReportID=167

"Religion is much more important to Americans than to people living in other wealthy nations."

The measure used is asking how much of a role religion plays in everyday life, and according to this study, it plays almost double that of what was recorded in Canada. People can still be hypocrits, but that doesn't mean religion is irrelevant.

At least find the latest study. Note what it says about defining religious affiliation.

Yeah, I see what you mean! Why should actually being religious have anything to do with being religious?

But most Americans aren't faithful, that's sort of the point, Jesus H. Christ man pay attention. Seriously, how can they be faithful if they go out and do EVERYTHING THAT THEIR RELIGION IS AGAINST ON A REGULAR BASIS?

Um, the study I posted compares religiosity with other countries. That is the latest study that answers that particular question. This study breaks down the various religions and religious sects throughout the US, which has nothing to do with what we're actually talking about.

edit, I don't understand your point about the religious affiliation. It's saying that it's diverse, yes, but it's also saying that it's fluid as well. It seems like you're placing a very rigid definition of what religiosity is, which is: READ BIBLE, GO TO CHURCH, BE ANGELIC, etc.

also why are you yelling

I shouldn't have used the word "religous", but what I wanted to actually say falls somewhat close in the same category. By this, I mean people that I've met and observed seem to adhere too much to religous dogma as opposed other things that are inherent to human reason and, logically, makes a lot more sense.

Everything. This country has more of everything than every other country. More military, more debt, more stupidity, more food, more arrogance, more innovation, more capitalism. Btw: I'm back, I haven't posted on GW in over 2 years.

overstated

seriously, it's a fucking developed country and it shares pretty much the exact same problems every developed countries share; high consumption of natural resources, high amounts of waste, and slovenly individuals.

it's pretty easy to say the country is fat (because yeah, lots of fat people) but almost all comparisons are made against a country that has like... a quarter of the america's population.  you could say the country is wasteful but being a developed industrial nation i can also say that china and japan are wasteful.  every country has a state religion (every), every country has zealots (every), every country is fucking prejudice (try asking a chinese national in japan what life is like), every country has crime, every country has *gasp* problems.

i know this topic is specifically about AMERICA but i knew when i walked in here i'd expect to see stupid college kid mentality and when I read this
i knew i was right.

i'm not trying to be that POST 9/11 PARANOIA I LUUUUVVVV AMERIKA guy but holy fuck if there is any country in the world that is criticized more than america for problems that exist everywhere then please give me a fucking link, guys.

shit.  you want to talk about religion, would any of you watch a mother bath her child in cow urine with a straight face?

but god, fucking jehova witnesses and their door to door sales fucking twats.

I hope more people read this and took it to heart than skimmed over it. This is the truest post I've read in a long time. The U.S. might be a popular punching bag but all the things we are insulted for is common among every developed nation. And all of these "flaws" that people believ we have doesn't keep hundreds of thousands of people from moving here every year to take part in the "American Dream".

Yeah that's a good two words to describe us. "Punching Bag".
Peace and Love

Well its just that every country in earth has that problem, except in differing degree. I mean everybody would consider Mexico extremely religious however it is also popular here to buy a prostitute for BIRTHDAY GIFT and other sorts of premarital drunken sex, yet at the end of the day there is Virgin of Guadalupe and Cristo Rey . So again, you are just proving that normal people arent dickless cherubs and do indulge in their carnal pleasures. So yeah, if we applied your standards there wouldnt be such thing as a very religious country.

Well, one thing I can say is that the US is an enormous country and thus quite unique compared to most of the other developed countries.

Usually the US are blamed for many things which represent the general ideology of only part of the country. But people forget that in these times, US culture has influenced the (especially western) world SO much is not even funny.

I personally disslike many things of the US - the fact that so much of the culture and general knowledge is based on the showbiz; that it is the developed country with the highest rate of gun murder; all the wars that they have provoked with intentions clearly not adherent with their maxims; etc... But on the other side there are so many things about the US I love, for example:
- Films: Thanks to the film industry in the US we get to see ridiculous amounts of films from which there are quite a few which surpass mediocrity, and that's good (if you like films of course)
- Music: No one can object that the US has produced some of the best music in the world, in many genres, and... well, I won't start naming cus I'd take the whole post.
- Arthur Miller: Awesomeness incarnated (or however u spell that). He wrote probably the two best plays ever (not rle... but amongst the ones I like the most): The Death of a Salesman and A View from the Bridge.
- Comics: I wouldn't be here without comics
- New York: I must say that it is in the top ten in my list of awesomest cities of the world.

And yeah...many other things which are awesome from the States that people tend to forget. I personally think that I'll apply for one of the Biggies when I do my Ph.D. cus I believe I'd quite enjoy living in New England or maybe some place with nice weather like San Francisco (?)...
