Yes I took the term from Persona 3 but for lack of a better word...I'm using it.

Anyways...

I been noticing this things lately in my town(I live in Toronto),first of all everyone seems really depressed, even people who used to be really happy, they "act" happy but they are really sad,and there is so much suicide and homicide, why a guy I used to know randomly killed his wife for no reason last week and he was a "normal" person!,another thing is that there is alot of old people like I remember going to the mall 1-2 years ago and it was a hang-out for kids, now every time I go its 90% old people,I checked the birthrate for Toronto and its 1.5! that means people are only having 1 kid...thats really scary because if the death rate keeps escalating then we are going to run out people,I know so far Italy is having similar problems, and look at all the natural disasters going on around the world...at first it was 1 disaster every once in a while but then all off a sudden we got an earthquake a hurricane and idk what else! Anyways do you notice similar things in your town or know something similar happening elsewhere? Feel free to discuss.

You link too many things together. For example the birth rate stuff is a problem in every developed (and developing european for example) countries. And don't worry you aren't going to run out people, you'll have the elderly natives + young ones from asia and south america. Have fun

I haven't really noticed anything like that in my area.  I will say however that the birthrate thing is a good thing in my opinion.  The world is too over populated as it is.

"apathy' loosely defines as "I don't care", or "not caring" so how does your topic relate to "not caring"? I'm confused. (unless it means something else?)

People like Nietzsche and the Deconstructionist's fucked a lot of people over. But i doubt thats in the conscious of the majority of people your talking about.

In short what you are describing is because of Modernity.

We are living in a world of phantasms, advertising and mass-production which chooses image over substance and money over people. It is the absence of meaning in our lives and in our actions. It is because we are all under surveillance. Right now you have the potential to be monitored. And all this has been subsumed into the essence of our being and the result is apathy because we are ultimately powerless.

Some people think happiness equates to ignorance. But that's only on grey days.

Generally I would agree with this:

How can things be better? I mean we got some awesome rpgs coming out and we already have some awesome rpgs that already came out...isnt the meaning of life to game?

It's by far the best way to think. Live in the now and enjoy life.

But unfortunately it seems that most people cannot afford to approach life this way, it is a mindset of the privileged or the strong willed.
The majority of people just don't have the money or the strength to fight off the modern world anymore.
That's apathy.

But if you meant atrophy its probably malnutrition. As for the natural disasters not a fucking clue, blame global warming.

My opinion:

lollll even though Nietzsche was obviously warning people about the fall into nihilism after we had uprooted and disposed of our myths about God (which would then lead to the destruction of much of our values which Nietzsche claimed were coming from a strong Judeo-Christian influence).

God is dead blahhhbl;ahhhh

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_is_dead

Nietzsche was trying to lead people AWAY from apathy.

True but what he meant and what people think he meant are potentially very different. Both the 'accepted' interpretation and misinterpretation of Nietzsche are equally present in modern thought and equally potent in their effect.

Also in the process of moving away from apathy surely you've got to admit that its not going to be an easy transition* from what was, until fairly recently (actually still is), a society completely and violently orientated around God or an idea of Divine Beings. 'God is dead' is not a blahblahblala, it's a pretty big deal.

*big understatement

Yes, I don't know why I wouldn't admit that. Completely destroying the system of values you have built yourself on for any extended period of time is pretty frightening at first and soon you find yourself in a nihilistic limbo of sorts.

I think you've been playing too much P3 man

Depression is a commonality nowadays because we live in a world where the ideal lifestyles are ones we can never hope to achieve without using illicit and immoral means and corrupting ourselves bit by bit. The most alarming thing in my opinion is how we seem to be in denial about everything negative that's going on. Constantly people are bombarded with the message "money isn't everything" while they dedicate their entire lives to making money.

Sorry if I'm not making much sense, it's early and I haven't had my coffee yet.

I don't think this needs to be dwelled on. This happens in many regions and it typically fixes itself.
Remember, fellow programmers: it makes no difference if you have the greatest graphics or the most thought-provoking storyline. Heck, it doesn't even matter if people are intrigued enough to play your game or not (chances tend to slide towards the latter). What matters is that you find entertainment and joy in creating something that few people are capable of.

Could you elaborate on that? Because when I look at the "bigger picture" I can't seem to find how one can be happy in the face of all that's happening in the world nowadays; all the suffering, materialism and longing for something to believe in, apart from just being blissfully ignorant.

I wrote what turned into an essay here, but there is really no need for that. Basically I don't know, I was trying not to be to gloomy. However, after thought, becasue the alternative to happiness is basically despair (and faulkner can stick is head up his arse on that one),  it requires you to take action against the source and objects of suffering and consumerism and have faith that others will do the same. As soon as you do something, it will affirm that others have the potential to do the same.

There are obvious problems with this that hopefully some of you will realise, challenge and build upon but im tired and hungry and need to go to bed so am not going to say them, ive had 2hrs sleep in over 48 hours.

I hope this topic will build into a healthy and fruitful debate, to be honest its something we cannot afford to have an anti-intellectual sentiment over, it needs to be discussed.
