I've come to the realization that a lot of people get ridiculously upset when a fat guy appears in a hot new fighting game. Now, I've only been following NEW fighters for a years, so I have no idea what kind of impact characters like Chang had in the past, but here's what I have observed.
Bo'Rai'Cho (Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance)
I know what the general consensus is when it comes to Mortal Kombat, it's a garbage series. That's true, the games are horribly unbalanced and Boon's crew couldn't make a good fighting engine if their lives depended on it but that is besides the point. Deadly Alliance looked set to reboot the series and make it "cool" again. It looked nothing short of bloody exciting to play and people thought this game would be pretty okay! But then.... Bo'Rai'Cho was introduced.
How did the excited fans react?
"FAT MAN FIGHTING WHAT THE FUCK!!"
"This game is going to suck."
"I'll beat the crap out of anyone who plays with that fat ass."
It was certainly strange seeing people who were excited for the game suddenly turning on it. Personally, I had never seen anything like it. I thought this might have just been a on-off sort of thing because, I mean, it was just a tubby guy in a fighting game. No big deal, right?
Bob (Tekken 6)
Fast forward a few years to 2007. Tekken 6 was hyped to high heavens, especially after the inclusion of some very cool looking new characters. Things looked fine and dandy until the final new character was announced. A giant, obese American. What happened next?
"FAT MAN FIGHTING WHAT THE FUCK!!"
"This is stupid, no way can he fight."
"I hope Namco removes that blob! What were they thinking?"
This went on for weeks, maybe months.. People were just pissed off to see Bob in Tekken. I thought he looked pretty awesome, so I didn't get what the big deal was. I mean, Tekken had self-aware robots, bears, and even a fucking kangaroo in the tournament, so why not a chubby guy? I just didn't get it. People were more accepting of a kangaroos role in a fighting game, but not a large man's?
Rufus (Street Fighter 4)
Another year passes and there's another super-hyped game. The first Street Fighter in YEARS and everyone is incrdibly pumped. The new characters all look pretty fantastic and apparently are all a blast to play with. And then..... A big fat guy appears at a loketest. Everyone is up in arms!!
"What the hell is that!?"
"Capcom better take that fat shit out of my Street Fighter!"
"Oh my god, I hope he sucks."
Suddenly people are losing faith in Capcom. Some people are saying that suddenly SF4 looks worse. What? Why? What is this???
I just don't understand this.. Why do people get upset over fat guys in fighting games?
Kangaroo? Awesome!
A panda? Bring it on!
Two foot tall dinosaur? Best character ever!
Weird freak with no arms and looks digusting (Oro, SF3).... Pretty cool too!
Overweight man. TAKE THAT FAT THING OUT OF THERE!!!!
I just... do not... get this!!!! What is it about chubby characters that sends people into fits or rage? All the guys I mentioned are, from what I hear, LOADS of fun to play as (except Bo'Rai'Cho because Mortal Kombat's sluggish, unresponsive characters aren't fun at all). So what's the problem here???
